I know I've had a ton of new thread posts on here, but I'm really trying to hammer down on what lens to upgrade upon my 18-55mm kit lens.. so bare with me.

I once considered the 18-70mm lens as the upgrade, but the more that I think about what I need, the more I consider a lens such as the Nikon 28-105... I noticed rarely do I use the 18mm wide angle (only for taking pictures of landscapes) and if I need 10mm more wide angle, I can always take a step or two backward since I'm usually outdoors.

I've gone pretty in depth with the 28-105 in terms of researching it, but now a few people have mentioned to me the Nikon 28-200 as a possible candidate. I still need to do a bit more homework on this lens to be caught up with everything I know of the 28-105.

So the question once again is, which lens would be the better walk around lens? Keep in mind I am a college student who takes his camera to events and just started getting my feet wet in the whole dSLR world. I will be pairing one of these lenses with the 50/1.4, so this lens won't see any close range low light situations (like concert photography).

I've got the 28-105 macro and it works real well for a walk around lens, also have the 18 -55 kit lens and its sitting in my bag.

I believe from what I've read that the 28-105 might best the 28-200 a little at some FL wide open, but the reason I chose the 28-200 was because I wanted more tele in my walk-around lens and I was not planning to buy a dedicated tele lens. And I have been satisfied with it. It is especially sharp towards tele. But if that is not the case for you, consider that the 28-105 does a 1:2 macro, which is also a strong point in its favor. However, since I got my 85 f1.8, I have had it on my D70 and the 35mm f2 on my D50. Interesting combination and fast and good glass is spoiling me even if I am zooming a lot with my feet.

Since I've asked this very same question a while ago and got a very
comprehensive answer from one of the lens experts on the forum
(Adam-T), I can refer you to that trhead:

The conclusion is up to you obviously. Good luck!

Thank you for the link, that helped out some to get more info on the 28-200. I think I just need to stop debating and go and get myself a 28-105 and just be happy

My 28-105 was my walk around lens until my husband gave me my 18-200VR for my birthday. I rarely used my 18-55 because the 28-105 was just so much better. I did miss the W/A once in a while, but the macro function more than made up for it!

This little bloom was less than an inch in diameter. I took the picture from directly on top of it. Frankly, if it had been a 24-105, I'd still be using it. You'll never regret it. Have fun! ;>
