i recently returned from a trip to mongolia (beautiful country!) and i noticed a number of small scratches on my lcd screen. nothing deep; very surface scratches but it got me wondering about whether these screens are prone to scratches? i always keep it in a camera case when i'm not using it so it doesn't get much wear and tear and would like to keep it as like-new as possible.

any info or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.

This is not unusual. The screen surface is very soft and prone to scratches. There are many screen protectors on the market, including some which also reduce glare (improving visibility in bright sunlight). Prices run the gamut from a few dollars to about $20 for an anti-reflection protector.

thanks for the info! i'm not sure how motivated i am to lay something over the lcd screen but i'll look into it. thanks again.

cool. thanks for the links. i'm a little hesitant to order it, though, cuz it involves taping the protector premanently to the camera. not sure i wanna do that but i'll think about it.

thanks!

I had the same problem too. The coating on the screen (I assume some sort of anti-glare coating) was completely scratched off within maybe 2-3 months. Admittedly, I think a lot of it (at least initially) was from my dad's rough handling, but once the first scratch was there it seemed like the rest started coming off really easily.

They sell cheap screen protectors, essentially pieces of adhesive plastic (a lot like the ones that come initially with electronic products) that you can cut out to a custom size and just stick it onto your LCD. I think they were less than $5 at Ritz camera the other day.

I've had da'protector on my SD 450 for several months and all is good. I wish they (or I) had chamfered the edge of the plastic before mounting it as it is a tad sharp. The view of the LCD is if anything better in ambient conditions and you could hit it with a hammer (tack) and not damage the screen. I highly recommend it for any of us that live in rough environments. Here salt crystals form on surfaces and one wipe and viola, scratches. I wish they made da'protectors for my eyeglasses. I spend a lot of time in the ocean and need to replace the lenses every six months!!!

The post for DaProducts is the source of the one that works. Take my word for it. You need to trim these strips of double side tape and apply them to the plastic and be carful because once you plant it, that's where it stays. I recommend a single edge razor blade or exacto knife to trim the tape. The poster that listed Daproducts was also correct, the protector mounts on the rim around the LCD and does not contact it. If you trim the adhesive strip very carefully, there is no way anything could migrate between the LCD and the Protective Screen.

Life is hard for electronic devices in the Virgin Islands....take my word for it Kayak, plant da'protector on your LCD and go forward with one less concern.

hey, thanks for the info. i wish that website had better pictures of the protective device. as a business, i'm surprised someone hasn't told them to have much better pictures on their website! they're just shooting themselves in the foot. thankfully, for them, they've got testimonials from people like you.

thanks again.

Damn I envy for living in the VI's. Which island are you on? I just spent a week on St John in May and have to say that it is pretty much the most beautiful place ive been to (and ive seen quite a few places, less the pacific).

I took a picture of the da Protector on a friends SD450.

It gives great protection and in no way interferes with using the LCD when installed. It does, however, add thickness to the LCD area and, imho, is a bugger to put on. I'm considering it for my SD700 but, to be honest, not sure I want to add something that thick. If it was thinner, I wouldn't hesitate to get it.

But I think I'm going to buy a good film-type protector instead. It will only protect the LCD from scratches but that's the main goal anyway.

I've been on St. Croix for over 30 years and agree on the beauty of the region. After the blush of the tropics is off the peach though there are issues one just has to get over. The inevitable rot of all things man made, from autos to electronics and cameras is one of them. Salt, we get Saharan dust and last but not least, volcanic ash from Monseratt invades everything when there's an eruption and the Trades are out of the SE. That stuff is like confectioner's sugar but as abrasive as aluminum oxide.

Whatever escapes those things is doomed by ultraviolet light. I bought a new red frisbee, left it in the front yard for three days and it bleached white!

Am I complaining? Naw, I drift down off the mountain, take a left and am at work in five minutes. There are very few rules so it is up to the individual to act in a manner that allows him to coexist with his fellow residents. We have 32 official holidays a year and the fishing ain't bad.

Here's a pic of mine on my SD400. It's not really that thick, just a couple of mm.

Re: Purplemoo

Thanks for the tip. I wanted the "bullet proof" daprotector for my SD450 but I also use a GPS unit a lot on the water and when I looked at the Purplemoo site, they had sheets for my particular unit. With the GPS, impact isn't the issue, it's salt crystals so that contact sheet type protector should work very nicely.

its not permanent. I've mounted and removed them, no problem. here's what they look like on my cam (as an example):

yes, its meant to come off (the shade part). below is a GLASS cover which keeps dust out and protects the lcd very well.

highly recommended. also in black:

(the one on the left, I sanded it down to cut the logo off as much as I could) ;)
