Nobody answers in the old thread, because you all were baffled by my competence and you don't dare to compete with my knowledge. But I still need some advice.

You know what? I canceled the order for a 28-200 and changed it to a 50mm 1.4 from Canon. How about the 24-70L? Or would the 70-200L suit my concert picture needs better?

... good copies of both.

I've been very happy with both lenses... I use the 70-200 a lot for indoor performances with good results (for me ... this is a hobby...), and I've seen some great stuff with that combination by folks who really know what they're doing.

The 24-70/2.8L and 70-200/2.8L are both among the very best of Canons zooms.

I have both, and while I love the image quality and autofocus speed and mostly everything about them , I do not love their weight. I tried the 24-70/2.8L on a 5D, and it would not be my choice unless the battery grip was attached to the body.

I am considering the 5D (without grip) and neither lens will be in my bag if I go for it. A few primes in the normal - tele range would be my choice as well as a 24-105/4L as walk around.

35 MM F1.4L
85 MM F1.2L
135 MM F2L
200 MM F1.8 L
300 MM F2.8 L

That should work well for any concert you want to shoot.
Uhm yes... lets hope the man does not have a wife or their will be complaints.

There are other options of course, but for the type of stuff he wants to shoot these would be the best.

He's already droped $3,000 US into the camera body alone....he doesn't need to buy all the lenses at once.

Or he could buy a few zooms and be content...for a little while.

I just got my 5D last week and did some test shots. Coming from a 20D this is a different machine. I do a mix of commercial and wedding work.

For my weddings I got the 24-105 f4. This is all you are gonna need to shoot the entire day. What a combo.

I have shot some stage performances with my 20D and I used my 85 f1.8 at 800 and 1600 asa. I would say this lens is a good bet. I also have the 70-200 f2.8 You will not regret having this lens either. You are gonna shoot at f2.8 with your 5D set at 1600 asa. This thing is clean. The noise reminds me of the TMAX grain.

Conclusion - get yourself a 70-200 IS make sure it is and IS the regular lens is not gonna do. For your wide to medium tele apps, it is a toss up. I like the 24-105 because it has IS and also it is tack sharp at f4. This is the kind of performance that is reserved for Canon's long lenses at very high$$$$$. Your original 24-70 f2.8 is also a good bet. Get the Canon the focus is faster and you get the shots. I had the Sigma 24-70. It is sharp at f8 but it is slow and also very soft wide open.

You have to bite the bullet on this one. If you are getting paid for your gigs then invest in some Canon glass. It is a one time investment. Bodies come and go but the lenses stay.

Hope this helps. Good luck

I do not understand this bit. Do you mean I should get the Canon one with image stabilisation? Because IS does not help me for concerts.

...especially on a FF-sensor like the 5D. It's optical performance is, overall, superior to any mid-range zoom Canon has, and the extra stop of f/aperture will not be critical, considering how clean the 5D outputs in high-iso shots. IS is simply a God-send, on this lens.

This lens will complement well any wide-angle, mid-range or tele prime you may choose later.

Good luck!

I totally agree about the f/4 not being such a big deal as I thought, due to the extremely good high ISO performance of the 5D.

I've had my 5D & 24-105 for two whole weeks now and the thing that strikes me the most is that the clean high ISO performance adds another dimension that I didn't have before with my old system (Oly E-1 that's pretty much worthless above ISO 200). When I can shoot ISO 800, even 1600 all day long and not worry about noise, the limitations of f/4 is a moot point.

Anyway, first impressions of a (very happy) 5D newbie.

Don't forget, there are two factors which will cause image blurring. Subject motion and camera shake. IS will reduce camera shake if you are handholding it. If it's on a tripod, IS is useless.
Yet I mean the IS version 70-200 IS (Image Stablizer). It increases
the number of keepers by a wide margin.

I doubt that using only primes meets the requirements of a concert photographer. I think you might be missing some good shots while changing lenses (not to mention the increased risk of dust collection...)

I think a wide angle to midrange zoom like the 24-105 would be ideal.

In concerts my best results where achieved with long and fast primes.

I will recommand a fast 2,8 zoom like the 24-70 2,8 L (IS do not help here : these people are moving : D) or the tamron 28-75 XR DI.
For zoom :
  • the 70-200 2,8 by canon or Sigma
I will also recommand a fast prime like the following lenses
  • 85 1,8 (85 1,2 L : wonderfull but way more expansive)
  • 100 mm F2
  • 135 mm F2
My best results are achieved with primes, because wide open a prime like the 105 macro EX is vey sharp

here is some with the 105 2,8 macro sigma EX

here is one with the 24-70 2,8 L at F4 at 50 mm

Last advice : shoot raw !

I love the crop factor at the long end, I hate it in the wide range

My 24-70L is great on my new 5D. I have read, but don't know if its true, that the 24-105L is worst (i.e, more vingetting & distortions) at 24mm on a full frame camera like the 5D.
