What's the consensus on 28-200 lenses for the D50? In working with my P&S Canon S400 over the past years (37-111mm lens equivalent), I've found that most of the time I'm way into the telephoto side of the lens then I ever am when it's wide.

I had planned to get the 18-70 with my D50, but I'm wondering if there are any good 28-200's to look at. The Sigma perhaps? I do see too much about the 28-200 range, so I'm not sure if it's worth the sacrifice.

The 18-200 VR seems to be out of stock everywhere. If I could find it, I may just go straight that lens, but I'm planning to buy the camera today or tomorrow from my local shop. They don't have the 18-200 in stock either, and have a waiting list.

I realize I might be "wasting" some money if I feel like I may end up back at the 18-200, but I could be waiting a long time, and I want to start working with a dSLR and learning. But, at the same time, I wan't to have good glass to work with.

When you say you don't use the wide angle much, I couldn't help but think that's because 37mm is hardly wide angle. With a real wide angle lens (18mm is really 27, which is wider than 37 but still nothing ground breaking), you might be surprised what you can capture. I don't have one (on the list), but the pictures I've seen have impressed me.

Plus, at least for my last camera, I didn't use wide angle much because the pictures didn't look that great. It excelled in close-up shots, so I've taken more of them.

But with the high quality imaging sensors of these dSLRs, you may be surprised at what you can achieve at the wide end.

I own the Nikon 28-200 lens and use it as my "every day" lens. I have generally been well pleased with it. Most of the pictures in my pbase gallery (except for the soccer action pics) were taken with this lens.

I will say that there are times that I wish I had the 18-200, but when I bought my D70 it was not available. 28 is really not wide enough if you have any need/desire to do architectural/real estate interior shooting. But for most snapshot or vacation shooting, it gives you a nice range of focal lengths so you don't have to worry about carrying a bag full of lenses around with you.

you can skip w/a and buy a nikkor 28-200G ED just as i did last month. it is surprisingly good for the money. but it is not a high quality glass. fortunately there is 18-70 dx for w/a shots. 18-200 VR is out of the question because of lens creep/corner softness etc. i can live with a so-so lens for $269 (it becomes very good for the money) than a so-so lens for $700 (that's not funny at all).
cheers

you might want wider than the 28 tho but the 28-200 is an amazing lens...lots on ebay for 200 w/ filter

in good light it's as good as any 200mm i've used (which includes the 80-200 2.8 & the sigma 70-200 2.8 and the 180 2.8)

Nikon 28-200 G ED is a very nice lens for walkaround if the range is okay for you. I have had the lens, and sold it when I got the 18-200 VRII, and now I'm sure I have to sell my kit lens 18-70 too ...

There is really no big different in the picture quality between the 28-200 and the 18-200. But the 18-200 is more flexibel as a walkaround lens.

I have never regret I bought the 28-200. All my pictures came out okay on vacations an so. Of course you can get much better lenses, but for the low price, it's still a very good buy.

Just my opinion ...

Her are some examples from the 28-200:

I also like the Nikon 28-200G and use it most of the time on my D70. It is a good range for most of the shooting I do. When I need wide angle, I use my 18-55 or 18-70 on the D50.

My D50 is just 2 months old, and I currently have the Nikon 18-70 lens. I don't own the 28-200 yet, but I just ordered one from Adorama. Most of the reviews I read said the Nikon 28-200 provides good image quality. Obviously it is not the fastest in terms of aperture or focus, but I decided it is a good lens to start with as I develop my skills. I plan to take these two lenses with me up to Alaska this summer. Their small size and low weight should make them good travel lenses (I hope).

The D50 + 28-200G is a hell of a rig for relatively no money, it just performs sooo damn well and has an amazing range - add the 18-55DX (a knockout performer between 18 and 35mm, it beats the £900 18mm F2.8 as an 18mm F3.5 Prime regardless of aperture !!) and you've got it made unless you need fast glass..

The D50 / 28-200 / 18-55 combo costs only £70 more than an 18-200VR lens alone and the lens duo outperforms it optically in every respect and has the same aperture (actually faster aperture at 28-50mm) .. VR is superb, and at its best in the 18-200 but the low-shake shutter action and High ISO performance of the D50 makes it less of an issue, I can handhold the 28-200G at 125th sec at 200mm on the D50 with careful breathing / bracing (make that 250th sec on a D1X!!) - all you lose with the 28-200 is AF speed, it's pretty slow..

The D50 (£345) and 28-200G (£175) together are well matched and almost criminally cheap for the performance offered.. I'd not even think about a 3rd party 28-200, they don't come close to the Nikon optically..

the closest is a top copy of the Sigma 28-300 between 28 and 200mm (Sigma 28-300s always made better 28-200s than actual Sigma / Tamron / Tokina 24/28-200s ever did though none match the Nikon) but they suffer from internal reflections which can make the rig unstable AF wise unless in dull light where these slow lenses are at their worst aperture wise..

  • I appreciate your information as I'm thinking of buying a D50 body and a 28-200 lens in GB. I've seen a D50 body for £330 at Best Camera but can't find the Nikon28-200 for £175. Two questions - where can you buy the lens for £175 and is it bigger/heavier than the 18-200.

Camera world - make sure you ask for a Black one (unless you plan on getting an awful Silver D50 ;-)

No, that's the beauty of it, it's small

£330 is cheap for the D50, Warehouse Express's £345 was the cheapest i'd seen - park are £349
