Hey folks..I just posted some D-40 samples...nothing special...I feel that the camera takes excellent pictures. There is a fair amount of CA (I guess its CA..haven't really learned the difference between CA and purple fringe...maybe someone can help on that point) I also read here that CA could be removed in camera by adjusting exposure and contrast..whoever knows please post here for me.

The camera is excellent in low light...shot, to shot is pretty good...no battery problems. Colors are very rich and true to life. The only thing I don't particularly like is the shutter button is way to sensitive and the CA is in a lot of pictures... especially in the trees.

Whoops, I think you forgot to post the samples.......Can't wait to see them

Agree with your comments on the D40... great little camera with tons of features. The CA is a bother though... so far, I have followed Phil in reducing the sharpening. The CA is most noticeable at the fringes and in dark on bright areas.

Hello Carmen, if you will notice, the CA almost always occurs when you outline a dark object with a cloudy sky background. When the same picture is taken against a blue sky, the CA is not present. This is true with the e100 and most digital cameras whose pix I have seen posted.>

This phenomenon has been explained in other posts. John R.> >

hi Carmen,

Thanks for posting your D-40 pics. I am still trying to decided between the D-40 and the 4040 or 3040. I like the idea of pocketing the camera but it is expensive and the lens seems so small compared to the others. Are you happy with it still? I am a total novice. I have never played with white balance or exposure or filters, always a point and shooter. I am looking for a camera that gives me great point and shoot but will allow me to explore the other manual controls when I have the time. I am also leery of getting it online since some have had the battery problems. I take it that you did not have the low batt signal after only a few shots?

Thanks again for sharing your images - I just wish that you could take the exact same shots with the other two cams... :-)

Hi Kok Leong,

Care to share where did you buy c40 in singapore and what is the best price?

The package in Singapore comes with the NiMH batteries and charger. Have you tried using it and how's the performance?

Thanks.

Hi Mary,

Well it's not possible now for me to take the exact same shots form all three at the present time...but I did at one time own all three of these cameras. And I will tell you that IMO the 3040 takes the best pictures of the bunch. I say this because I found the lens to be very sharp and fast, colors were very accurate and the results were consistant. I purchased the D40 and returned the 3040 because I wanted a more compact camera and the D40 was so tiny. I knew I could get it into my purse or pocket. Now it is MO that the D-40 and 4040 are quite similar in may ways. The D40 is vey powerful and can be used as a great point an shoot and you can experiment with all the manual settings as you go. I just don't like all of the CA..this is the problem I also had wth the C-700...I have had the 2100 an currently own the 100 and I find that I rarely ever experience CA with the 100 or the 2100 for that matter. The 4040 while a very nice camera I found something lacking in the picture quality..don't ask me what..Just to also let you know, I did not experience any battery problems as written here...I can take about 60 pictures and then have to change and this is using the LCD (always) and the flash a few times. Pretty good performance for a little camera with only 2 batteries...I believe that those couple of people that had those problems had defective cameras. All in all its a fine little camera...haven't made up my mind if I I'll keep her yet. I don't know if this helps...but good luck on your decision...if it were me and size won't be an issue I'd go with the 3040...its great camera.

WOW, how lucky am I to have found you?! I can't believe that you have tried all of them! Just from reading and looking at reviews and all, I came to a suspicion that the 3040 was the best. It is the camera that I picked before I started flipping... I would have gotten it pronto about 3 months ago had I not really wanted to pocket the camera. That's how I started looking around more. I liked the Nikon 775 size but wanted more MP. Then they came out with more MP but I didn't like the image quality of the 885. In comes the Oly D-40. I like the feel of all Olys and my current film pt n shoot is an Oly so I know I like the company. I think D-40's a good compromise (CA but pocketable) but I just hate spending that kind of money on a compromise. So, once again I am off to the store to feel the cameras. I will go with the 3040 or the D-40. I want to get it online since I can't take spending $150 more in the store for it, but it is hard to return or exchange anything if you buy online. Just wish that the store price was anywhere NEAR the online price... Did you buy at a store?

Anybody out there: Do most of you buy extended warrenties?

Flipping back and forth (and flashes of UZI dance in my head).
Mary

Hi Again Mary,

I buy most all of my cameras on line....I always make sure they have at least a 30 day return policy. I usually keep most of them and resale them on ebay..of course sometime I lose money but I pay for the previledge of trying thm out. Digital is a beast of a different sort...with film you can have a great camera for decades...but with digital changing so rapidly...they always are making them better an better, so it's hard to keep just one. I have the 100..and the fact that it is so rare in it cababilities I will definitely keep it...but it has it's limitations because of the pixel size but the bottom line is it takes exceptional pictures and is very consistant. I always wanted a really pocketable camera but I don't want to comprimise on image quality. Have you looked at the Canon S30/40..I also tried the 40 but the images look a little ot to me but print great.

Go to mysimon or resellers.com and do a search for the cameras you are interested you will find many vendors with priing for your particular brand.

Good Luck..its a good idea for you to go feel and touch them. Have fun!

best price I got was 1270 at Cathay (peninsula). the free charger is fantastic... 3 hour charge for 4 batteries (1450 mah). With the batteries, I can take about 120 pictures (if i switch off lcd around 50--60% of the time) without flash. The battery low light flashes around the 70-80th shot.Iif i leave the lcd on and the camera on (standby), i can only take about 70 shots in total.

The CA problem is not insurmountable... just came up with an adjustment layer (following phil's method) for photoshop which I apply to the images with the CA.

Forgot to add, the 32mb smartmedia they give free is a panoramic one... tried it out and it works great! Easy to stich together pictures and the printed results are simply awesome.

The next time you are taking a picture with a tree against a bright sky try taking a few shots with the exposure compensation at -0.7 and -1. Also take a normal shot to compare these to. The purple fringe should be reduced if the sky isn't overexposed. This works with most digital cameras.

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify, are your statistics based on 2 batteries or 4 batteries?

btw, there was a previous posting the pointed to a web site. The web site guides thru the process of formating a non-Olympus SM to be able to support panaramic. You might want to search the history.

I still can't make up my mind on C40 or canon s30. sigh...

I own the D40, E10 and Nikon C990. Today I decided to test them side by side with no correction in image management software. I used the default settings on automatic at the widest angle of the cameras. This was then printed on a Canon S800 with no color management-5 x 7 prints.

The oly cameras definitely look more saturated as they are known to be. What suprised me was how much detail the Nikon had in the shadows that the D40 and E20 did not bring out.

All prints were acceptable and it would be a matter of preference. I guess I will still hang onto my 990-was thinking of selling it.

I was thinking of an E20, but will probably try the Nikon 5000 and compare now that I know that that Oly and Nikon handle shadows differently.

However, I enjoy all the cameras and use them for different things. The D40 is nice just to drop in a pocket or purse.
The E10 I use for important family events and the 990 is kind of in between.
I will add a url for the pictures on Ofoto-don't know if it will work.

2 batteries.

my 2 cents... size wise, the s30/s40 are much bigger. That's the main factor for me in buying the D40 as i wanted a carry with you everywhere camera. I found most 2 mega pixels relatively unsharp so decided to get a higher mp camera (also want to print to 8x10).
