I installed the EOS Digital Solution Disk version 12 on my Dell notebook computer. The included software worked fine but when I attach my 30D to the computer via USB it is not recognized. The hardware wizard cannot find the proper section in the INF file.

I spent over a half of an hour with a Canon tech support person who was very helpful. We tried all sorts of things such as preventing non-Microsoft and Canon items from starting up to removing some items from the registry. However, we were not able to resolve the solution. The technician suggested that Dell may be of blame here and that I should contact Dell or Microsoft to resolve the issue or to reinstall Windows XP.

Looking on the Canon EOS web page for the 30D I saw that there is no WIA driver for the 30D available. The Canon technician said that this is the first Canon digital SLR that is truly Plug-N-Play in that no driver is needed for Windows XP. Well, I really want this to work as there are rare occasions that I want to do remote shooting with my camera and I want to attach my name to my camera. 99.99% of the time I will be transferring my pictures via a card reader.

Before I installed all of the 30D software I did uninstall all of my Canon software from my 10D. The uninstalls did give me some error messages so that may have messed some things up.

Has anyone had this problem and have been able to get around it? I don’t want to reinstall XP but I am willing to try some creative things.

Thanks,

Mike

Did you by any chance try a system restore... and go WAY back?

You could also try going into device manager and take out all the USB entries. Reboot (with the camera attached) and let Windows rediscover everything.

I don't know about Dell recovery CDs.... but sometimes with the recovery disk you can hunt down the OS and do a "repair". You'll have to do some digging to hunt down setup.exe for the OS.

If you find it, run setup and during what looks like a normal install, there will be a repair option. You can do this from within Windows and use Explorer to hunt down Setup. Also, depending on the type of OS license, you can sometimes do an "upgrade"

Sometimes it works.... sometimes it doesn't.

One final note.... if this is a new PC and still under warrenty... call Dell and tell them you have a "hardare" issue. If they say it's the OS and you'll have to call Microsoft.... tell them ... NO, it's a hardware issue.

There.... now go forth and really mess up your PC ;-)

I did not have any problem connecting my 30D with XP. In fact, I connected it successfully without installing the 30D software, and could see it in My Computer. However, to download or shoot remotely thru ZoomBrowser, I did have to install the EOS Utility that was on the software disk.

I've tried a number of things.

1) Used Norton Utilities One button repair to no avail.

2) Going back to a couple of weeks ago on the system restore does not work. Windows just says that it is not possible.

3) The Canon Camera Access Library Service is indeed running.

I will try the repair after a good backup :).
