A quick poll...jpg or raw?

Thanks to A2 v1.14 and RawShooter (and a high-speed 2GB card, plus much encouragement on this forum!!!!) my default setting is RAW+, because it allows me to magnify on playback to see if the shot came out OK, in tricky situations, such as when DOF is short (especially 300mm or macro), or low light (to check that AS handled 1/60s @ 200mm). RAW+JPG is still faster than my old 7ug was for JPG! I also have a memory setting for RAW with high-speed advance, for when I want to catch something moving/changing.

Even though I shoot RAW+JPG, the ease of using RSP, plus the quality, means I only process (not post-process!) RAW - it is actually easier than JPG editting for most of my shots!. Since I'm still a newbie to RAW, I sometimes look at or play with the JPG to remind myself why I should just stick with processing the RAW instead ;o)

For me, it really depends upon the situation. If I need to shoot rapid, successive shots, then jpg is the way to go for me. If it's landscape or portrait type work, then raw suits the situation far better!

It'll be a cold day in hell when I shoot my A2 in JPG ..

Hi to all Friends here,

This is supposed to be just a quick poll to see how everyone is
doing their shooting styles.

It's enough to include "jpg" or"raw" in the title line, but if
you'd like to enter more reasonings on either format please feel
free to do so.

Let's see where were are at in early 2006. :-)

Ever since I became the owner of the A1 (almost two years ago) and A200 (8 months ago) I've been shooting in RAW. I want it to be me who decides how my images look like, not the software of my cameras.

The file size has never been a problem to me. I've got four 512 MB SandDisk cards (each has room for 42 MRWs) and Archos Gmini 400 with me when shooting. If and when all the cards fill up (only happened once) I download them to my Gmini.

When home I process only those images I need to and then backup all my MRWs to my external HD and to another HD in my networked PC. And to make it foolproof yet another copy to a DVD.

Only raw.
No problem of write speed since last firmware.

And that, in spite I've bought DxO Optics pro, wich does a pretty job with jpegs (it does not come with a raw converter for the A2).
I don't use it anymore since I shoot in raw.

I don't take that many pictures. I have a 1GO, a 512M, and a 256M cards, and that's enough storage.
I don't want to carry too much stuff.

I like playing with the settings, to see if I can get a better image.
Raw is much more funny.

As others have said before and at least one person said here, the only situation where I don't use RAW is for ebay pictures.

...as for most shots I think it's sufficient and I don't want to fill my hard disks with 10MB files or so ;-)

But in difficult conditions (sunsets, ...) I also intend to try RAW.

I'm a new convert to raw, but recently my camera has been playing
up when I use raw, so every now and again I have to 'reset
defaults' and test it out with jpgs.
Michael
What do you mean by "camera has been playing up"?

I've only had my A200 for a month or so, and started shooting RAW and converting to tiff in the program that KM supply. It takes a lot of messing about, and it didn't really give any great image quality improvement over shooting JPG at the X-Fine setting.

I tried opening the RAW files in PS7, but it didn't read my files... I thought it must have Adobe Camera Raw installed as part of the program but not sure now?

Anyway, for the real winner shots I'd like to start shooting Raw, but only if I have a means of converting to tiff in a decent program. From what I've read on the forum, there are a few different options.

Please could on of the RAW experts point me in the right direction, and let me know where I can download this program (for free!!!).

Many thanks, Dunc

Hello Feri,

Sometimes the red LED just keeps on flashing, a 'system error' message comes on and I cannot turn the camera off unless I remove the battery.

When I put it back the cam is normal, the image is where it should be, and everything seems fine.... until I release the shutter again.... red light goes on and on and on... I did once wait to see how long it would flash - but took the battery out after five minutes!!

Anyway, if I reset the defaults everything is ok for a while.

This happens perhaps twice a week and only since using raw !

If returning it to KM was easy I would do it. Any suggestions?

Regards, Michael

Don't forget that your camera has the back up of the complete wisdom of all the techno geeks in the R&D department of the camera company.

So if your pp'ed RAW image is better you've beaten the combined wisdom of loads of experienced guys.

I have A2. After I got Sandisk 2GB Ultra II card I'm moving to RAW mastering RAW conversion software on its way. Currently I'd say it's 60% JPG and 40% RAW but my plans is to shoot almost entirely in RAW.

However it depends on my ability to reach satisfying colors - I tried RSE 2006 with all tips and tricks from this wonderful forum (Oly E1 profile, etc.) but could not get these wonderful greens from spring flower fields like I see them on the JPGs shot at the same time. I'll try ACR 3.3 today or tomorrow and hope that I'll get better results.

Happy shooting,

Kirill
