Canon 20D vs 30D hands-on comparison

Boo....awesome shots....especially considering they're ISO 3200!

I have a question that's hopefully not too dumb! From your quote below:

"Shot in RAW, developed unsharpened (and with no NR), resampled and then sharpened selectively"

What exactly does "resampled" mean?

Thanks in advance,

..Lew..

Hi Boo. I also jumped in and got a 20D end January, very pleased with it, had 300D before. By the way have you received your cashback yet? Sent for mine 26th Jan, rang Canon Ireland last week, they said it was being processed! Regards Mike Norfolk UK

How does this blasted forum know exactly which bloomin' post you didn't bother to copy before hitting the submit button and when you do, you find yourself looking at a snow scene in Poland on the Sony forum!! Grrrrrr. Goodness knows where that post will show up! I couldn't find it.

Thanks - I was rather making the point that workflow has as much influence on the success or otherwise of high ISO shots. And without knowing what the exact workflow is, it's perhaps not appropriate to judge the image's merits in isolation - when posted for this sort of purpose.
What exactly does "resampled" mean?
In that context, it just meant that I resized it from the full res. camera image to 700 pixels wide, or whatever, to post here.

Hopefully, someone else much more knowledgeable than me can explain the difference rather better, but as I understand it, the term is defined by the particular algorithm used to make the image smaller - I used Lanczos3, which resamples the pixels in order to give a better quality result with fewer jaggies on curved edges and the like. When you make an image smaller, a lot of data is thrown away and the algorithm used determines exactly how that process is done.

Nope, not got mine, I posted it mid-February. I got an e-mail after a couple of weeks saying that it was being processed and I could expect my cheque within 20 days - which was sooner than I expected. It also contained a tracking number and ID that allows me to check progress on the web site.

About 10 minutes later I got another message saying they were experiencing significant delays and they'd get my cheque to me ASAP. When I log in to check progress it says something like 'being processed'.

Thanks...that is the best photo I have seen for the 20D...all other photos, maybe because of the angle of view, make the switch seem like it is sticking out below the camera, and then the minor changes on the 30D seem even like more of a problem...

When I went to Wolf Camera yesterday to compare cameras, their stock consisted of Pentax DS, Canon 350XT, Nikon D50 and D70...when I asked about the 20D, they said they were too small a store to carry it...

What else could I do but post here???...thanks for your answer...now I must find a store with a 20D to see how it feels in the hand...and then compare to a 30D if such is available...

great pictures of Robyn, hope the gig was as good as they usually are.
Thank you. It was an incredible evening. I must admit, I went to see Scott and the Minus 5 boys largely (I hope they tour the UK in their own right later this year as they've said they hope to), but Robyn was wonderful, I was totally won over - it was a very special evening on many levels (we laughed a great deal too), I always love photographing gigs, but that was especially wonderful and I've made some new friends as a result of it.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Boo. I love this forum!

Hi guys,

Been real busy for a couple of days and just got thru all the posts. I cannot do a comparison of the 20D and 30D because I already sold my 20D. Sorry

Here is an Iso 3200 raw image cropped which was converted to a jpeg with the Canon software.

Now on to the AF. I went to the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells Tennis Center to test the AF. My telephoto lens is a Tamron 200-500mm I shot mostly auto racing with these very same lens and my 20D. I haven't shot tennis before but my general impression is that I got alot more keepers with the 30D than I did with the 20D . I know for sure the servo mode tracks faster with the 30D than it did with the 20D. Here are a couple of jpegs which were sharpened just a little. Both were shot with the Tamron 200-500 at Iso 400 in the servo mode. Was very happy with the way the camera performed and am happy that I "upgraded".

Nice music shots. I've shot some music stuff myself. It's been mostly publicity stuff so far, but I have a friend who runs a label, and I'm supposed to be doing some live stuff for him and a few bands he has. I'm impressed with what you've achieved at high ISO. Normally I shy away from anything over 800, but seeing those, it's given me confidence to push my 20 up some more.

That looks significantly better than the one you posted at the begining - it looks much, much better. It looks like there's some noise reduction or sharpening going on (I could see some moire type pattern when looking at it smaller), untouched noise looks a little different, but it's still significantly cleaner looking (but the better light, focus and exposure helps) than the one you first posted.

I loved the frozen pose of the second one - it always amazes me seeing stopped sports action like that, just what stresses the human body can stand when stretched to the limit - and how flexible it seems to be - that's one very fit looking athlete.

Nice music shots.
Thank you, that's my absolute passion really.
I've shot some music stuff myself. It's been
mostly publicity stuff so far
I've done a couple of promo shoots - largely for local unsigned bands that can't afford to pay - but it's a separate discipline in itself and I don't feel I have the right skills for that, so only do that where the band are sufficiently desperate. There's a lot more to it than taking the photos - it depends if someone else knows what's required and you're just a camera monkey, or if they want/expect you to have the ideas too! I also have a bit of a problem with the idea of posing and directing people (my nightmare scenario would be shooting a wedding) - I'm much happier doing pure reportage work - I much prefer the challenge of not being in control of anything other than the camera.
I'm impressed with what you've achieved at high
ISO. Normally I shy away from anything over 800, but seeing those,
it's given me confidence to push my 20 up some more.
I've used 1600ISO routinely with the 300D - many thousands of shots - and the 20D seems even cleaner and I'd use 3200 in the blink of an eye - I could underexpose 1600, as I work in RAW, but on the ground in the dark, it's easier to change the ISO than think about consciously underexposing - and it's instantly more gratifying if the band want to look back at the photos in the LCD later.

Thanks for posting that shot of the 30D...that is EXACTLY what I was referring to, that the switch looks like it protrudes beneath the bottom surface of the camera, as tho they moved it from the 20D because the LCD screen might be closer to the bottom of the camera...

Anyway, since I have not seen the 30D yet, the released photo looks like everytime you set the camera down, it is resting on its on-off switch, which, if true, makes no sense...the photo of the 20D shows a switch well above the bottom of the camera...

If Wolf had a 20D, I would have known what it looked like...

So, is the 30D as it looks in the photo, or is it just the angle of view???

Great photos! I liked the tutorial on your website, but I wish you would update it to 20D technique (those parts that have changed, that is)

I always enjoyed seeing Robyn- His adlibbed comments between songs are so funny that I don't know how his bandmates could concentrate on playing the next song.
