looking forward to some of your new shots!

I really took little notice of it - just assumed that it had to more or less suck, but if is is pretty darned good the combo of that and the D200 would be pretty awsome, and importantly for me, portable.

If only I didn't shoot so much in low light, where really good high ISO is important....
Hi Tim and Rick
I think that each has it's obvious advantages and disadvantages.
I know what you mean about the lens Tim
I managed to get hold of one of the 18-200 lenses to go with my
D200 - it's as close to a miracle as I've seen in a lens - the
VR(IS) works beautifully, and you only need to stop down 1/2 stop
for it to be really sharp. My 17-55 and 70-200 are currently
gathering dust! (I'm sure they'll come out again).

Having spent the last year carrying the D2x and with the 17-55 and
the 27-200, carrying the D200 with the 18-200 makes you feel like
you're going to float off the ground!

Anyway Tim, good luck with your new camera - and stick around here
  • a little corner of sanity in the dpreview world.
I hope you enjoy your D200 Rick - I think mine is the least
irritating camera I've ever owned . .. I'll be interested to see
how long it stays as the 'backup'!

kind regards

HI David

Of course, there are no miracles in lens design, and as you'd expect, there are some issues wit h the 18-200:
some vignetting wide open at 18mm
not as sharp at 200mm

BUT

you really only have to stop down 1 stop to get the best out of it, and the VR works really well, which means that it's easy to get the aperture you want - I've got perfectly acceptable shots at 200 mm at 1/10th second!

It's just such a great range, and it's so light and convenient. It's much better than one has a right do expect from such a lens

It's also great for low light work (as long as your subject isn't moving around too much) allowing you to keep the shutter speed low and therefore the ISO.

It's not a very fast lens, but Nikon's claim of 4 stops advantage with the VR more than makes up for that in most circumstances.

I've been using it in conjunction with the (very compact) sigma 10/20 - it gives a great focal length range with a minimum of weight.

Definitely worth considering (if you can get one - they're about as common as rocking horse muck).

Cool :-) Matches my findings, although I had quite a bit of picusion distortion, which I don't mind as I can correct that and sharpness is excellent - incredibly, its one of my sharpest lenses at around F11.

Quentin
It came today and I just got finished printing (at 12x18) some test
shots, tripod mounted. I see no barrel distortion at 28mm and just
a hint of pincushion at the 200 end. Certainly much less
distortion than I was getting with the 24-85G on the Kodak and the
DX 18-70 on my D100.

Sharpness is excellent. No magenta or green color shifts.

Seems to be a very nice lens at an excellent price!
