hi guys,

i just want to ask you if it is necessary to get the extended warranty for this Oly E-500 or just stick with the manufacturers warranty for 1 year? i about to buy this camera at Futureshop (just waiting for them to have stock) and they are offering extended warranties for CAD$169.99 for 2 years. how does it work? is it 1 year from manufacturer and another 2 years from Futureshop or just 2 years altogether?

another option is to use my credit card which doubles the manufacturer's warranty so i will be covered for 2 years.

does Olympus offers extended warranty if the camera is purchase here in Canada?

thanks.

I got $4K worth of stuff from local camera store (Body, Lenses, FL-50, Extreme memory cards, etc) and I got a 2 year exteded warrantee on the whole lot for about $375 (including all the non Olympus stuff). I don't know how that compares to the FS one.
On the other hand the credit card one is free and will cover everything.

i checked Oly website and they don't offer 2 year extended warranty anymore. it says "Not in Stock".

I went for a 2 year warranty on my E500. I usually don't go for extended warranty on electronic devices (i.e. computers,TV's etc) as they usually fail on startup or within 24 hours of use. I felt that dslr's (cost mainly) could have a failure rate that is somewhat higher than expected. (my own opinion). I just had a p&s fail in 15 days of use. Other p&s over 2 years old is still chugging and those are digital. You just weigh the cos of fixing or replacing. You know this stuff (dslrs are constantly changing) in upgrades.

Ciao,
Louie

ephotocraft has a good price on the extended warranty if you're interested. They have a good reputation for on-line sales. As it is a local shop here in Fairfax County, Va. I sometimes shop there and have been happy with their service:

does World Wide Warranty Inc. has a website? i need to get some more details.

or should i stick with my credit card double manufacturer's warranty?

All I have is the number to call when something needs to be fixed. 1-866-899-1916. You would have to probably buy it through a dealer. FS has their own, so I don't know if you could get it.
The credit card thing sounds good because it is FREE.

BTW, just got my E-500 this evening and posted my first pics.

Places like FutureShop will offer the sun and the moon, but when you make a warranty claim you'll be lucky if you get manure. Personally I got mine at Henrys and the extended 3 year waranty through their repair network.

All Olympus dealings in Canada are handled through the United States, and that includes their extended warranty. I went through all this with my C-700, but never got it, and instead put the money towards a new camera...I plan to keep my E-300 longer than three years.

I did a bunch of searching online to find a deal. I got my cam this week. Profeel offers the standard 2 lens kit and for $240 extra you get:
  • Olympus CS5-SH Semi-Hard Case
  • Protective UV Filter 58mm
  • Sandisk Ultra Compact Flash Card 1GB
  • BLM-1 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery
  • 5 Year Extended Warranty
additional 4 years parts & labor with nationwide service

Thought it was a pretty good deal - 5 years is nice, and pretty much for nothin if you break it down, Flash card is 100, case is 60, extra battery and lens also.

Mike makes a good point ....

I've not dealt with them personally, but for the most part, third party warranties are not a "good deal" . There really is no good deal on a warranty. The problem with third parties is making a claim ..... unless you're a lawyer and understand the agreement in whole .... you can get fleeced pretty easily. Ask yourself simple questions about any warranty....

-Who adminsisters it? ... is it a stable company ? You may buy a warranty for a reputable dealer, but when you read the fine print, it is usually yet another party who actually administers it.These companies can come and go like night and day.
-Who repairs and or cleans the equiptment ? Are they trustworthy?
-What do you do if a claim is refused?
-How long does service take?

Olympus factory extended warranties are very good. You can get one for any E-system body, lens or flash. You get high priority service , and one free cleaning of your product during the warranty period. You can even get them for refurbished products, as long as it's purchased within the 90 day refurb warranty period.

Then of course, there is the general question of wether any extended warranty is of any value. As always, it depends on the user.

Good luck, Garth

I just purchased my Oly 2 year extended about 10 days ago, but you're right, says out of stock which seems odd.

Called Olympus and asked how can a Extended Warranty be "Out of Stock"?

Person explained that the Extended Warranty itself is not "Out of Stock", its the Extended Warranty "paper/card" that Olympus sends to you that is Out of Stock. In process of printing more -- should be available (back in stock) within 2 - 3 weeks.
