Hello

Im looking at getting a zoom at the 300mm and am interested in getting something in the Sigma 70-300APO price range. Would people say that this is one of the best lens in this price range?

I would like to shoot flora and fauna with this lens as well as close ups of buildings etc.

Thanks

Every time it comes up, the majority seem to agree that this lens is the best in its price range. The next big step up would be the 70-200 f/4L.

I own the 70-300 APO and it's been a great lens for the money.

Thanks Eric. Have you any links to photos you have taken with the lens?
Thanks

Very happy with the Sigma APO DG. Here are a few I posted recently:

It's a very nice lens... But the only thing is the front rotating focusing. but can't complain for it's price... I am very happy with the optical quality, except for it's extreme slow focusing...

For the Macro mode. U can focus in

I was thinking of tradding in for the Canon 100-300 USM. But the 100-300mm doesn;t impress me much except for the focusing speed and the internal focusing.
Cheers :-)

excellent pix. this lens used to be $189 but now I see it advertised at $219. No big deal, but I was just wondering where you can get it at the old price. And is the current version still the

Sigma 70-300 APO Super Macro II or have they changed the name again recently?

As many others have said, this is a great lens for the money. I am planning on getting the 70-200 f/4 soon, but this is doing the trick in the meantime. Here is a low-res shot with a bit of processing in PS (250 mm, f/8).

But it's not top notch glass... definitely not a low light lens. But good for what it is... I like mine all right in good daylight.

Hi All,

I have been reading on the forums some time and this lens seemed like the best option for my current photog budget.

On the way home from work last night I picked it up from UPS finally (I am getting real sick of UPS). I think I might have been the last order B&H shipped before their holiday ;)

Anyways, I was playing around with the lens a little last night but my apartment has horrible light so I couldn't do too much.

My question is how exactly do I use the macro mode? How close can I be to the subject I want to focus on? I've never used any macro features before and I am very new to the SLR cameras.

any info would be great.

I took some shots with the regular mode and they looked great.

thanks.

I have the DG version and I love it. Focus hunts a liitle bit in low light compared to my 17-85mm. But that lens has USM and the Sigma does not. Mostly use it outdoors. I am still a new to photogrpaphy and wanted reasaonably priced tele to start with. I'm very happy with it.

Here are some pics from my trip to the Taronga Zoo while in Sydney in August:

Go for it. It is a great lens for the price.

Cheers!

is available only between 200 & 300mm. Only when you're in that range you'll be able to switch to Macro mode. Minimum focusing distance is still somewhere around 1.7 meters.

Ahhh, so in macro mode I need to be about 5 feet away from my subject to achieve focus.

I was not aware of that.

Thank you very much.

Here is a sample of an Orchid macro shot at 300mm. The lens is the APO Super II version.

keep in mind that the lens' sharpest aperture is f8 for the range 70-200mm and f11 for 300mm. My lens is soft at f5.6 300mm gets sharper at f8 and gets to the peak of it's sharpness at f11.
