what is for ?

SHQ,HQ,SQ what is that for ? sorry but i'm new user of digital camara . somebody can tell me the diference , thanks . --maria

The quality of the pictures you take...SHQ - Super High Quality, HQ - High Quality, SQ - Standard Quality. The better the quality, the larger your file will be. For most shots and for most people, HQ is generally the normal mode. (also the default)

But I've been noticing that my photos look a lot better in SHQ than they looked in HQ.

They should look better ... in fact, their best. The higher the quality the lower the compression and thus the larger the file. Compressing an image (i.e. JPEG) effects quality and the more aggressive the compression, the lower the quality. It is a trade off ... HQ=lots of images, lower quality ...SHQ=fewer images, higher quality. As for which one to use it is a matter of preference, storage, and intended use. If your images are likely to never see paper and are only posted to the web, HQ is more than enough ... in fact you may even look into SQ. However, if you desire to print up to 8x10, SHQ is definitely the way to go ... in fact, in this case you may even want to consider TIFF, which has no compression at all, but very large images.

When I only had a couple of 32MB cards, I used to shoot mainly in HQ.
The camera processes HQ a lot faster than SHQ. But now that I have a
couple of 64MB cards, I use SHQ a lot more often, just to get the highest
possible quality, even though SHQ is only slightly better than HQ and
is much slower to process, both in the camera and in my PC.

No, HQ is not more than enough for me. I hardly ever print my photos, but as I said in my previous post, I've found that my SHQ shots are much better than my HQ shots. For quite a while I've been shooting in HQ because I had gone along with the belief that HQ was sufficient for photos that wouldn't be printed. However, after a few SHQ shots I find it just isn't so.

You can take lots of pictures in the lower quality modes, which may be ok if all you want to do is post pictures to the web. Your manual will tell you how many. I alsways shoot in SHQ because I want to be able to blow my pictures up to at least 8 x 10.
