FF vs. DX is Like Automatic vs. Stick

BMW launches the X5 and porsche had no choice but to follow suit with the cayenne. if lamborghini came out with a truck i would have to image that ferrari would give a long hard look.

now that Canon offers FF affordable camera, do not wait for D200 - switch immediately! Especially because it may turn out that D200 is more of a camera then the new Canon. And if you switch to Canon, it will not matter much for you how good will be next Nikon offerings in one-digit series.

Some photographers I know feel a lot when they shoot. They become really connected to the gear they use and once it sings to them, they don't change too much and just get out and make incredible imagery.

They, we, don't feel right with the wrong gear.

You can make excuses all you want for DX. That is great for you, maybe you don't feel any different with a cropped camera or a real one, good for you, really.

I don't feel right with a 6 string guitar that only has 4 strings on it.

I don't feel right with a mountain bike with 16 speeds instead of 24.

I don't feel right with Nikons cropped cameras....and this is the way many of the world's most respected photographers feel too. I have talked to some of them.

Today, I feel free. I feel like I have gained 10 years of youth and vigor back. Because that is how long I have waited for the 5D.

This camera has already made a difference in my life, not just my pictures, but my LIFE!

I have a BIG smile on my face. "My" photography is back.

"My" way of seeing is back.

"My" Canon 5D is brilliant, just brilliant man!!

I am SOOOOO Happy about this...:-)

but why should you, I, or anyone have to essentially repurchase hundreds of dollars worth of glass? won't you be ticked off if after nikon repeatedly said they would never go FF, leading you to buy DX glass, only to have them reverse the position?

1) not all cars are offered with both options. For example the bigger Mercedes models are not offered with stick shift, and some smaller cars are not offered with automatic

2) Automatic in many cars costs 1500-5000 Euro extra. For this extra cost you can purchase a 5d and then you have a dx AND a ff camera.

Just because there is an option to choose in a car doesnt have anything to do with the question which sensor to use in a camera (IMO)

You have to consider demand vs. cost

Canon is a much larger company.
I'm a FF proponent, want FF, don't want DX. After reading through
the countless threads here lately about FF vs. DX, specifically as
it relates to the 5D has been exhausting.

I don't know about you, but for me the single biggest issue is
Nikon supporters do NOT have an option. When I buy a car I can
choose automatic or manual transmission. There are those that will
tell you one is better than the other; but at the end of the day
the consumer can choose. Even in cars that don't offer an
automatic option can have one put in after-market (the Lamborghini
and Ferrari come to mind). With the Nikon stance on DSLRs our
choice is clear, DX or DX, unless you want to switch.

As a consumer i'm irritated that I don't have the option. The
issue at hand isn't if FF is better than DX or if Nikon is better
than Canon. The issue should be about choice. I hope that whether
you are a DX or FF advocate you at least understand that what is
ultimately right for you may not be right for me; and unless there
are service offerings to accomodate both perspectives, the only
real losers are us as consumers.

Why constrain technology with an obsolete standard (that "film" stuff, what ever that is :) New standards are a part of progress, and always have been, and have always been accepted after resistance. Kodak Brownie owners probably objected to the 35mm too. My only concern is that Nikon will listen to all this rubbish and make my DX lenses useless in the future.

...you are complaining so much about Nikon's lack of FF that it is affecting your life! You are constantly complaining about Nikon, and though you say that this isn't a Canon vs. Nikon issue, the solution is right there for you, and it will probably make your life less stressful. However, if (like Film Rules) you are so tied up in your equipment that owning FF makes you feel complete, you might want to investigate some professional channels for help...and I'm not talking about help from professional photographers here!

I would think with that much pent up energy you would have bought a 1DS Mark II long before now.

Why haven't you? Why wait to be this happy?

I am an artist, not a consultant or strategist. If you talk to a counselor, he will tell you that no artist likes to paint with brushes that have had the bristles reduced to little nubbs.

Sorry, but this is the real deal.

you could gain if you actually put more effort into using the camera you had then worring about the framing of the little square you see through?

Keep your nose down into the photography and walla....you will have either increased your photographic skill level....or when you finally look up....Nikon might have made a FF by then.....

Win win if you ask me.

Too big and heavy for the work I do. NGS style PJ documentary and adventure work, more the F100 and FM3A camp than the F5 side.

Refuse to ever pay more than 4K for a camera when there are people living below the poverty line.

Knew I would get exactly what I wanted if I just switched and then waited a year or two.

Holy Smokes was I right on the nose...;

OMG please please stop slaughtering Ferrari and Lamborghini good reputation. They are NOT german sport cars (WHAT???) they are Italian.
You'll NEVER see a SUV from Ferrari or Lamborghini NEVER.

The same apply to Nikon.

P.S. you should know that not everybody could buy a Ferrari and it's not a matter of money: you MUST enter a list. After you had said that terrible thinks about Ferrari (a TRUCK!!!!) i'am afraid you'll never enter that list...maybe you would try a second hand or be happy with a german sport car (WHAT???) :-)))))))

Then you should be happy with your new toy camera and go
back to the canon board instead of trolling on the Nikon board.
Adam you should go with him or go buy one of those really
great Kodak FF masterpieces.

without ever seeing it? for the record, I probably get out and shoot twice a week (a little less lately since we bought a new house). Two boot, I'll be in Rome in less than a week for a 7 days worth of shooting.

never once did I say I don't like my D100 or D2H. If you read my posts I actually favor the D100 very much (more so than the D70).
