I spotted these this courting couple while cleaning the gutters on a house today. I couldn't miss the opportunity for a photo shoot. The location was boring, but you takes it where you finds it.
Cor! I fancy her.

This sequence was filmed over a 20 minute period. I hope you enjoyed it.

Yikes, cool little story. In case they both are the same kind of spider, which one is the male, and which female? Are females bigger in the spider world?

Both spiders are Garden Cross spiders and the male as normal, is the small one.

Unfortunately, the pictures only show a very brief version of the full story. The approaches were very tentative and carefully executed. There were numerous web tapping shots (#1) where the male would gently tap the web with one leg to signal his approach. (kind of like knocking on the door.) Then he would come closer and tickle the females front feet with his outstretched leg. If the female made a grab for him, he would back off and start again.

When the female eventually let him touch her, he would try to hold her legs out of reach so that he could get in close. Many times she let him in and tried to grab him, but he would scramble away again. After many close calls, and lots of gentle leg stroking, the female retracts her legs and the male gets in real close to deposit his little packages. The female stays still, and allows several close encounters, but the male still tries to hold her legs away just in case.

The male eventally finds the spot and enjoys a brief moment of pleasure. Then just when he rolls over to light a cigarette, she grabs him and rolls him up. Game over!!
I took over 100 shots, but obviously cannot post the complete series.

Even better watching the story unfold Brian. It was like the Black widow mating sequence I have seen on the TV, but never in real life. Facinating to watch.

just in time lapse mode. ;-)

I did actually take a fast frame sequence of the final part, but before I shot it, I changed to my 100-400L with a close up filter attached. I just wanted to see how usable it was, but as you can see from the exif on #8, I didn't get the speed up enough and most of the shots were too blurry to use. In the final moments of capturing the male, the female moved a bit faster than I anticipated. Had the shots been better it would have made a nice animated sequence.
