Camera RAW 3.1 Available for download !

Is the update of any value in PSE3 if one is not using a 350D or
D2X? Are there new features that a 300D owner can use on PSE3?

J
ACR 3.1 running under PSE3 uses the new default tone curve ("Medium Contrast"), which has a higher contrast and deeper shadows than the previous tone curve, and is closer to what other raw converters generate by default. You can control this curve when running under PS CS2, but PSE3 users just have this new curve hardcoded.

There are also some bug fixes and tweaks the highlight recoverly logic. The algorithm used by the auto checkboxes has been tuned somewhat.

So, yes, I would recommend this update to all PSE3 users, no matter which camera they are using.

Thanks for the info, Thomas. Looking forward to working with it.

Is that for the 300D or the 350D ? Or both ?

What's new with that one ?

Thanks for enlighting me!

In the description on the Adobe Discussion forum you (I assume it's you) says where you should put the plug-in update on the Mac OS X system, but the link says something about CS2, so what's the correct route for Elements 3 to update it's Camera Raw? (I'm almost thinking of using Elements 3 until I can afford to upgrade my CS now..... hmm... why not, it's a damn good software even if the Organizer isn't in the Mac version).

Please advice. Thanks in advance!

Petra

The new CameraRaw works in Elements 3 for my XT raw files.

What about DNG? Is there any advantage to converting XT raw to DNG and then processing in Elements 3?

I also have Elements 3.0.Someone posted above this: "To install ACR 3.1, replace the existing Camera Raw plug-in at the following location:

Win: \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-ins\CS2\File Formats\… "

Is this step necessary with Elements?(Sorry,I'm not very computer literate).I assume that it is not necessary to remove anything, and I'd just download the plug-in.Would someone quickly run through the steps to install in Elements? Many thanks!

Well, as I understand Apple is working on making DNG the standard for Raw files, regardless of brand of camera. So hopefully DNG will be a standard as common as JPEG or TIFF in the future. So it might be an idea to convert your cr2-files to DNG if this will show true and the camera manufacturers join the party. As far as I know only Hasselblad has adapted to this right now, but I hope (together with Adobe) that DNG will be the defacto standard.

Not sure about the cr2-files, but a friend with a Nikon D2X says he even can save space using DNG since the file sizes gets smaller without any quality loss. So yet another reason to adapt to the new DNG format.

Apple is something totally different, I keep mixing them up.... it's ADOBE that is working with the Standard of DNG, no one else! :-)

You probably converted to 16 bit. Change to 8 bit and it should be fine.

Hope this helps.

Richard

Just checked the difference between the file size between the CR2-files and the DNG-files. It's about 40% less.

CR2 = 8.4 MB
DNG = 5.6 MB

So if you shoot raw and want to save space, convert to DNG! :-)

I am surprised. The DNG files converted for 6 MP pics are also about 5 MB. I presume you were talking about RAW files from the XT. I also thought Canon has compressed their RAW files.

I found it in the folder within Programs that Elements was installed in. In my case it is in

\Photoshop Elements 3.0\Plug-ings\File Formats

Find the file named Camera Raw.8bi
Move it some where else (Cut and past it to another folder some where)
Cut and paste the new Camera Raw.8bi file into the File Formats folder.

You also need to put the raw converter programs some place.

Before you start, make sure Photoshop and other related Adobe programs are closed.

here is the link to the Adobe site

Here is the words from the link regarding Elements 3.0

"This new version of the Camera Raw plug-in also replaces the original Camera Raw plug-in that was installed with Photoshop Elements 3.0.

To install:

1. Exit Photoshop Elements.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
4. Navigate to Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 3.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats.

5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure that you keep this version in case you need to revert.

6. Copy the new Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop Elements. "

Thanks, summersr.I think I can handle it now:)
