>>>CHALLENGE 38: INANIMATE OBJECTS Official Thread<<<

...we had a fabulous day and I got heaps of photos. Two are in the CTF challenge (Fed Square and the big blue building). But my very favourite thing we did yesterday was this:

We went 55 floors up to the top of the tallest building in Melbourne and I fisheyed the city. It was fun!

Today my calf muscles are screaming (we walked for miles), and of course the payoff for having a day out with no kids is putting the house back in order after they were left in charge of each other.

Cheers,

Gayle

Cos if I did, I'd want my money back. First my Hard Drive shot wouldn't show up, now my one and only eligible shot isn't showing. Neither is Earls flower photo.

I worked hard on my elgible photo, I really, really want it to be seen. I;ve renamed it 4 times and uploaded it 5 times....the poor little bunnies will be going bonkers from all those trips into cyberspace.

OK, I'm done whinging, gotta go do my second entry.

Aaaah, yes...this is me. The reason landscapes are it is because I'm usually there on my own or with husband only, who doesn;t seem to mind if I become anti-social for a few hours. Yesterdays shooting in the city became my zone......him and I, NO KIDS.....I zoned as much as I wanted. I think I went into a complete trance at the top of the Rialto tower. Lucky they have mesh fences there ;-)

Shooting around the house is fraught with interruptions. In fact, none of my kids, even the big grown up ones, can begin speaking without screeching "MU-UM" first. Going to a local event usually means taking Miss Bry with us, and she's not past asking for money, food, toilet etc...every few minutes.

Joe, the postal service are on a 4 day holiday right now.....but I start checking the mail box for stickers tomorrow. Send it on down, Cindy! Don't forget to address it to Australia, Way Down Under, Best Country in the World (not a lot of snow there)......just saves it from taking a trip to Austria first ;-)

Gayle
The zone isn't a place or particular subject matter, but a frame of
mind enabled by solitude or a sense of isolation. Might sound
rather anti-social, but in all creative/intellectual matters, I
seem to immerse better and deliver more when I have space. When I
have that space, the world in the viewfinder is a different place,
and the longer I'm there, the further I wander. I completely lose
track of anything other than the immediate context (e.g. time
stops, no clue which continent I'm on, etc). In extreme cases, you
could interrupt me, ask me my name, and wait longer than expected
for me to remember. I always return refreshed, so I clearly need
to find a way to go there more often.

Sometimes I wonder if my affinity for candids is innate or a
reflection of the fact that I rarely get that space (i.e. making a
virtue of my own reality). Between career and family, focused
shooting time (pardon the pun) is short and infrequent. I wonder
what kind of photog I would be if single and without demanding
career. One day, when the kids are less inclined to hang with Dad,
I hope to retire early and find out...

Has Cindy sent the sticker yet?

T H E G A L L E R I E S

The challenge galleries are located at:

http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/cslr38_inanimate_objects

There are two galleries/categories you can enter submissions into:
Eligible and Exhibition.
  • Eligible: Entries must be taken with a Canon Digital SLR camera
during the Challenge period, please see the timetable below. A
maximum of 3 images per person may be submitted to this gallery.
  • Exhibition: Entries can be taken with any camera at any time. A
maximum of 3 images per person may be submitted to this gallery.

T I M E T A B L E

Challenge Start: Friday, 25th March 2005 0:00 UTC
Challenge Ends: Tuesday, 11th April 2005 23:59 UTC
Voting Begins: Wednesday, 12th April 2005 0:00 UTC
Voting Ends: Thursday 13th March 2005 23:59
  • The voting booth will open automatically at the end of the
challenge and stay open for voting for 48 hours. I will post a link
to a new voting thread in this thread (or its successor, if we hit
the 150 post limit) as soon as possible after the voting has begun.
You do not need to wait for the voting thread in order to vote. The
voting booth is here:
http://www.liteserv.com/cslrvotebooth/index.php

P R E P A R I N G _ Y O U R _ I M A G E ( S ) _ F O R _ U P L O A D
  • There are no limits on image post-processing. Edit to your tastes
and the voters will decide if it’s too much.
  • To have your image(s) come across the way you’ve intended - on
multiple monitors, browsers and operating systems - make sure it is
in the sRGB color-space and please embed the color profile when
saving.
  • There is no limit on pixel dimensions, but viewers are more
likely to appreciate your work at its original size without the use
of scroll bars. So - unless your photograph has a very
untraditional aspect ratio - keeping the longest side of the image
at 800 pixels or less is strongly recommended.
  • Please size your images to 150kb or less. The size of the file
once it is uploaded to PBase is the size that counts. PBase reports
the size in the rightmost column on the ”edit this gallery”-page.
150kb = 150x1024 bytes = 153600 bytes. To save you the trouble of
recompressing, I have found that aiming at around 140kb in
Photoshop, usually will keep the file size under the allowed 153600
bytes once it is uploaded to PBase.
  • To preserve the EXIF-information, it is recommended to use the
”Save As”-command instead of ”Save for Web”. When updating an image
in-place, PBase will retain the original EXIF and therefore using
”Save for Web” can be used in that circumstance.

U P L O A D I N G _ T O _ T H E _ G A L L E R I E S
  • The login and password are unchanged from the last challenge. New
contributors should email the moderators at pass(at)imageattic.net
for these credentials. Please allow a few hours to receive a
response. Note: (at) = @.
  • If you need help in uploading to PBase, an additional help page
is available at http://www.imageattic.net/pbase_howto.htm
  • Please ensure each image includes your name and a unique title.
For eligible entries, the date on which it was taken and the camera
model must also be shown. Exif-information is not a must, but
always appreciated. Also, feel free to share your shot set-up,
post-processing details, and the like with your fellow
photographers.
  • Those who prefer more plainspoken and critical comments on their
images should mark their title(s) with an asterisk ( ).

B E I N G_ A_ G O O D_ C I T I Z E N
  • Please respect one another’s work. Do not delete, move, or
otherwise edit other entries. Please respect the first-come,
first-serve sequence of the gallery. You may update your images
in-place, provided that the subject matter and general treatment
have not materially changed (PBase supports this function on the
“Edit Image” page).
  • Image by image, please share your comments with your fellow
photographers. Challenges reach their full potential when the
dialogue becomes as important as the images themselves. You have to
be logged in, in order to leave and read comments.
  • By clicking on ”profile” at a gallery page and then on ”View Your
Forum” (you have to be logged in for this to show) at the Profile
page that appears, you will get to the PBase-forum for Canon
DSLR-challenge. This is a great way to follow new comments on any
and all images in the galleries.

If you are the first to comment on an image, I kindly ask you to
type (or copy paste) the title of the photograph into the
subject-field of the commenting page. This will default the subject
field of all subsequent comments to the title of the photograph and
will make the PBase-FORUM so much more informative and legible

General discussion: What is your "zone"?
I don't know exactly... Usually if Mother Nature serves amazing lighting conditions and I happen to have a camera as well as time at hand - that will do it - get me into the zone...

...so much for posting. You have no idea how much your photos make me yearn to visit Australia, more than any of the other photos I've seen. I have relatives from Melbourne that will visiting me in the states very soon. They always ask me to visit them but I'm stuck with work and responsibilities here. I know I'll visit them someday but not sure when :)

No one has posted to this thread in 21 hours. How about some socialising to keep it where it belongs?

It's almost the weekend, who has plans? I think I am entertaining a city friend who is coming to the country for a day of photography. I have no idea where I'm going to take him yet.

I plan to try out my new wrist-breaker: a Sigma 80-400/4.5-5.6 EX APO OS. You really don't get a feel for how BIG these things are until you have it in your hands!

I am going window shopping for a good macro. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thx.

I had every intention of doing some shots, but work has snowballed and time has been difficult to manage.

Took the plunge and started advertising properly to supplement the product shots I do already, and hence have been working on a new website for myself in what spare time I've found.

I also went shopping for some new studio equipment which I've merely taken out of the boxes and looked at since I got it back here :(

Got some proper shoots to do next week though which will be the first in a while. Need to get my creative juices flowing again. Looking forward to it.
