Hi all,

I haven't had my camera for 2 months and it already suffered its first drop! I feel so f*cking stupid! I even had it in a Lowepro Photo Runner bag, but it seems the bag's padding isn't as thick as some of its bigger brothers. I was carrying a lot of bags out of the car and the Photo Runner was the last thing I picked up and when I started waking it slipped out of my fingers and fell 3 or 4 feet SMACK down on the parking lot! When I got inside I found that my Hoya Pro 1 UV filter was bent slightly in two places, and now it won't come off at all! What's worse is that the zoom on my 17-85 IS is stiff when it passes between 35 and 50mm. Not so bad when applying force but it's a little tight and jumpy when making finer adjustments. F*CK!

Now the good news is that I feel justified in spending $100 for a year's worth of Ritz Camera's ESP Service Plan on the lens so they will repair it even though it was my fault. The bad news is that they said the turnaround could be 8 FREAKIN WEEKS! I feel so depressed right now. BTW, if you paid Canon to fix the lens what is the typical cost and turnaround time? Just wondering if this warranty is worth it for the price I pay in turnaround time.

Thanks!

BTW- Is it true that if you buy a lens at B+H you have 14 days to return it if you "don't like it"? Just in case I need a lens for a weekend or something...

Yeah, been there, done that. Dropped friend's zoom from piano top
to wooden floor. UV-filter got bent and won't come off anymore. In
my case, zoom ring works fine, but autofocus doesn't. And manual
focusing works only by turning the front of the lens, not by turning
the focusing ring.

I know that sickening feeling deep in the stomach.

I was cleaning the sensor on my 10D the other day (tried blowing but it had a few stubborn dust specks). After repeated passes with the spatula the dust wouldn’t budge so I decided to use a little more vigor. Took a test shot and the first thing I saw when I viewed the image on the computer….a long SCRATCH form one end of the sensor to the other!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boy did ever feel sick in stomach.

With hands shaking I tried to wiping the sensor again….and took another test shot….viewed it on the computer and … it was just a strand of some lint.

Ouch, man. Did your friend ever repair it? If he did, do you know roughly how much it cost, how long it took, and if it was "like new" when he got it back?

just in case it makes you feel better :)

Drop my G2

Drop my Elan IIe

Drop my 10D

Drop my Plastic Fantastic (Tokina 19-35)

Now that I know that the plastic fantastic is not quite well built. Upgrade to Canon 17-40.

Drop my Hoya Pro 1 77mm C-PL

Moral of the story, sh1t happen, it's how you deal with it, or prepare for it.

Last fall, I was arriving at my sons football game. I had my camera in its bag and my 100-400 lens in its case. My husband opened the rear door of our SUV and bam! I heard that terrible sound too and my heart fell. It was the $1500 lens that fell to the cement. I got out and picked it up and heard rattling like glass. I felt like just throwing it away without even looking, but I unzipped the case, took out the lens. The filter was shattered and all bent in. I carefully took all of the glass off and shot a few shots. Everything worked fine. I got home and looked at the shots on my computer, still good. I tried to get the darn filter off, and no go. I had to call Canon at this point. I did not want to do that because the lens is fine, but I have to get the filter off and now this will void my warranty. It was a tough call and just as I figured they tell me that my warranty is not void because of neglect and a drop. The good news is that my lens is perfect as the day I got it, and they only charged me somewhere around $100 or so. It could be a little more and I got it back within 2 weeks. I know alot of people don't like filters, but I really think that it saved my lens along with being inside of the case. That filter really took the brunt of the fall.

I know the feeling, my 20D fell off the luggage cabins in an airplane (about 6ft high!) 3 weeks ago, the camera was only 2 days old and had 17-85 lens on it.

I remember afterwards looking up again and again during the flight thinking its way too high, it must have suffered some damage.

Eventually after returning home and running complete set of tests it turned out to be perfectly ok. (touch wood...)

I suggest you check your camera and lens using this assistance I got in this forum:

2 years ago I ordered the Pentax Ist D DSLR, I had been using an Oly E20 with all my Pentax AF glass waiting and waiting. I got the first one in the Western States when Pentax finally released it, full retail at 1795 (seemed cheap 2 years ago). 3rd day I dropped it with a flash unit mounted, it ripped the flash shoe right off the body--camera worked by no flash functions work. Took Pentax 30 days to decide to give me a new one since it was so new their service was not set up to fix it.

You got your lens back from Canon service in 2 weeks? Damn I'm starting to regret buying into this warrantee program. 8 freakin weeks they told me. I'd rather pay "retail price" for a repair now that I'm thinking about it. Sheesh!

now why would you want to do that? they are in the business of SELLING things, not RENTING them. and I, like many other customers, prefer to buy something NEW, not SLIGHTLY USED.

it's people like you that try to take advantage and get over on others that cause stores to be so unfriendly and impersonal when it comes to returning things for legitimate reasons. save the money and buy the damn lens.

B&H is not a lens rental place.

Sorry you dropped your camera, my wife has dropped my 200 2.8L twice, both times it was in the soft bag that comes with it with the big a$$ lens hood attached, both times it bounced off the lens hood and didn't have a scratch.

I added my equipment to my home insurance policy for just this reason. Incredibly cheap. Your may be covered anyway, but by adding it specifically, it eliminates the deductible. Hopefully I won't need it, but it is there. Of course it does NOT cover manufacturer's defects. Best of luck to you.

On vacation....

Dropped the 20D with a Tamron 28-75 lens first onto a concrete porch from about 3 feet. Fortunately, it was in a LowePro Topload bag which provided a little bit of protection.

The good news is that everything seems to work fine. The lens cap caused some cosmetic abbrasions on the filter thread, but optically it was protected.

These are tough cameras!

Sell it on ebay in 8 weeks and take a $50-$100 loss for the 8 week rental. Abusing the return policies of these places is nothing short of fraud. Hope I Don't sound to self Righteous, but this is the reason a lot of places have a restocking fee and I think i'll buy my next lens from one of those places.

and it was well worth what I paid too considering the cost of this lens that got dropped. I did call them and "hound" them some. If you send it to Canon, don't wait for the letter that they will send you for you to accept the cost of the repair. When you think they've had enough time to get the lens and look at it, call them and find out the what the charge will be over the phone and tell them to fix it and put a rush on it that you need it asap.

Agreed about calling them and hound them..

I send my 10D for repair, out of warranty.. I did not recieve their estimate letter until Saturday March 19. However, I called them on Tuesday March 15, and they have the estimate information ready for me then, and I authorized the repair on tuesday as well.

Funny thing is that they shipped my camera out on Friday March 18. One day before I received my estimate letter that asking me for authorization for repair.

no.. when I call them on tuesday.. I authorized the repair.. and gave them the credit card info...

have I waited for the letter instead of calling.. I would have gotten the letter on Saturday.. it took them so long to send out the letter..
