I was hopping to get some real-world advice concerning this camera and lens-compatibility....Many of the reviews I've read mention something to the effect that many of Canon's L glass, particularly the zooms, won't always give satisfactory results with the full-frame body, especially around the image edges (softness, lack of contrast, etc).

I'm interested in the larger image size of the 1DsMKII, but with the type of work I do (my work is primarily fine art nature/wildlife with some portrait) and lenses that I use, the lens compatibility issue is a major concern if true.

I shoot my 1DMKII primarily with the following lenses:
Sigma 12-24
EF 24-70 2.8
EF 70-200 2.8 IS
EF 100-400L
(upcoming purchase EF 500L f4.0)

Can anyone share any experiences with the 1DsMKII and any of the above lenses, particularly in reference to full-frame image quality (edge-to-edge sharpness, contrast, yadda yadda)?

Thank you very much for taking the time!

I have the 1Dm2 and the 1Dsm2.
Lenses
16-35
50 1,4
70-200 2,8 IS
300 2,8 IS
500 4 IS

No big deal compared to the 1dm2
Double resolution half speed and
superb quality.

16-35 not good.....the rest just fine.

Fine work on your website.

I have the 1DsMk II and the 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, and Sigma 12-24.

My copy of the 16-35 is fine. Perhaps not as good as my 21 mm Zeiss Distagon but no problem. The Sigma is soft in the corners, as you would expect, but stopped down it provides very good quality at its unique perspective. I took a lot of photos in Eastern Europe with the 24-70 and the first 1Ds and I'm well pleased.

The 100-400L in particular suprised me after reading Micheal Reichmann's report and seeing his 100% Crops which look worse than my tests using the same camera (a Mk1) using a plastic mount cheapo 80-200 F4.5-5.6 ....

the 100-400L is tack sharp wide open at all focal lengths from edge to edge on the 1DS, a good 24-70L is too (well, mt 28-70L is anyway) and the 70-200L IS is also (my old 80-200L is sharper though :)......... I KNOW you said Mk2 here, but if a lens performs on one FF cam, then it should on ALL FF cameras...

Please ignore the Typos, I'm the world's worst Typist

A GOOD copy is sharp edge to edge on a 1DS - a bad one (3 tested out of Four in my case) will have one side or other with a blur issue

We have got a 1DS Mk II and have had no issues with our lenses - all of which are Canon; except one..... the 70-300DO which is poor generally.

Of the ones you list we have a 24-70L, 70-200 L IS and 100-400L. All are satisfyingly sharp.... noticeably better than on our 1D Mk II - which is very good in itself!

We have not looked in detail for problems with the lenses but I think we would have seen issues at edges, etc if they were particularly evident.

After reading LL's review of the 100-400 with a 1DS I was a bit worried but our copy of this lens is very impressive on the 1DS Mk II.

I agree that the wide angle zooms won't cut it on this camera...however the 24-70 is superb at 24mm (at least mine is). All the other lenses will be fine. Believe it or not..my sharpest lens is the cheap 50mm 1.8
I have the 1Dm2 and the 1Dsm2.

300 2,8 IS

How can you use the sigma 12-24??? Isn't it cropped for 1.5x sensor (1d mk2 is 1.3), so it shouldn't even cover the sensor for 1d mk2.

Not sure about the exact lens details, but I do know that my 12-24 is excellent on my 1dMKII. Perhaps you're confused or were given wrong information??
