Which "inexpensive" lenses are you using?

...according to your $400 criteria

50mm F1.8
Kit lens
Sigma 70-300 APO macro
Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro

All are great- its me that needs to improve not my lenses

Looks like everyone here likes the

Canon 50mm 1.8 and the
Sigma 70-300.

Does the sigma get soft closer to the 300mm, or does it remain fairly sharp?

Also, does anyone own the Tokina 24-200? It's the lens I'm mainly considering for my walkaround lens! Anyone looking to sell theirs?

Thanks,
Dan

Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is a merger of State and Corporate Power. - Benito Mussolini

After having bought the 50mm 1.4 and realised what a good lens should look like I have never mounted the 28-105 on the camera since. I know that the next time I will be shooting outdoors I will have to but I hope that I might be able to get hold of something decent until then.

I wanted to just poll the community on any "inexpensive lenses"

i.e. such as the 50mm 1.8
i.e. the Tokina 24mm-200mm
etc.
I'm thinking about buying the Tokina, but wanted to know if anyone
else had any other luck with descent "inexpensive" lenses (mostly
third party).

Thanks,
Dan

The Sigma gets a little softer near 300mm, but in my experience only for distant objects. For close up macros at 300mm it is very good.

I have a rapidly growing collection of inexpensive and junk lenses:

Kit Lens - unbeatable value

Peleng 16mm Fisheye - about $225 or £125 - I would really recommend this

Soligor 200m M42 (with adaptor) about $19 or £10.50 - amusing gadget!

Canon 75-300mm USM III - just playing with this - debating whether to get something more expensive

Have a look at my home page for some tests...

Kit lens - not too bad

50mm 1.8 - good lens, as you know

Canon 28-80mm 3.5-5.6. Pretty ordinary - but it's what you expect for the price.

Canon 90-300 USM 3.5-5.6 not a good lens at all, quite soft, especially past 300mm. But again, you get what you pay for, so I'm not complaining

.... is my first long zoom. Noisy and slow AF, dreamy beyond 350 mm, has tons of CA and awkward to hand hold.... but built like a tank and I'm keeping it for sentimental reasons.

Here's some bird pics with it:

I have the Sigma 70-300 (the APO Super Macro II) too and I find it gets a little soft at the 70mm end as well as at 300mm. 200mm is sharp! Great lens for the money. Macro rocks!

Also have a 24-85 USM Canon. Don't think they make it anymore. Got it as the kit lens with my EOS IX (the ill fated APS cam) about 5 years ago in the UK. It's sharp all over, light. fast and has the perfect range for the DR.
