I think it's a camera profile, after install you can open Colour Management Setting, and it should have new installed profiles.

I was wondering myself how those compare with the velvia pliug-ins too (digital film, fred miranda's, etc...), actually I was cheap and ended up writing my own. =)

if someone can take and post a test image so people who have the plugins and profiles can apply and post them so we can compare the results directly of one image will be nice.

I can post results from my plugin if test image is available.

Atleast on the ETC site they said they will post side by side comparisons. I just cannot figure out if I use this profile and change to adobe 1998 tiff... Will it still be the same? Or Can't I get the same look in photoshop using curves and such? I am a little confused on the matter. I shoot mainly fashion and portrait. It does however interest me.. But not sure if my couriosity is worth 29.00$...

Plus if you do not have a well calibrated monitor, Are they worth anything? As we all make adjustments in photoshop after the converting to Tiff. Does this make sense?
Thanks,
Snook

I would expect that the side-by-side comparison would not be quite objective, coming from one of the "competitors"... anyhow...

open Colour Management Setting,

in Camera Profile you should have 4 profiles for 1Ds (daylight, flash, portrait, tungsten). when ETC is installed you should have a few more profiles.

It should change colour saturation, WB etc, so it will be "effective" no matter the colour space... thats how I understand it.

why ETC? it will be probably lighter on your workflow if you process 100s, 1000s of images in batch =/

my "pliugin" is not for PS nor for C1, but can process batches =) eventhough I don't need it to for now. and the adjustments are made in 32bit per chan =).. not sure how/if that makes difference, so I want to compare how it matches to ETC and Digital Velvia etc.. :)

I am not quite clear still.. If people are using different lights lighting etc... don't all these have different temperature and thus resulting in different settings anyways. Sorry to sound stupid, but not sure how the profiles change... Is it a contrast etc difference, or a color balance difference etc...

Because the other settings such as flash etc.. or depending on the temp of the light you are using.
Where do these porfiles come in there?
Thanks and sorry if these are stupid questions, but do not really get it?

I'm still trying to make heads and tails of it myself...

from what I get from their web-page they offer ICM profile (like the one you set for your monitor to show more correct colours) which C1 uses to correct the colours from the camera file.
see here:
http://etcetera.cc/pub/index.php/article/articleview/25/1/3/

it shows the difference in the colours from the "Generic" and the ETC HiSaturation profile.

Worth it? Absolutely!
Simple to use and easy to see comparison.

I've been using Magne's profiles since day one and, let's just say that Magne knows what he is doing. He is the guy who does printer profiles for some of the world's largest companies.
After you install the profiles (only for Phase One's Capture One program)

simply choose one of his profiles under "camera profile" NOT product profile (that's the camera model-20D/1Ds/1DsMkII) and process.

You can choose either "embed camera profile" or "convert to destination" depending on your preference. C-1 will convert to your work space if you desire, if you choose the second option (aRGB or whatever), or you can keep the embedded profile and convert it yourself to whatever you need in PS. It's up to you.

I'm sure that he will have comparisons available soon. You can count on no "funny business" from Magne. He is way above any of that nonsense. What you see is what you'll get.
I predict you will be happy. :-)

C-1 is a wonderful program, but to make it really "sing" and be really color-accurate, you need the profiles.

I have no connection with Magne other than being another very happy user of his profiles.

Tom can you please post a quick (crop maybe) of before and after?
or rather "general" and ETC?

I'm not sure how big the difference could be, after all thats just a ICM profile =/ (and I would like to compare with what I have now)

Can you explain how it works... If I use a grey card or whatever and eventually will be tweaking colors in photoshop, I am not sure what it really changes. Please do not get me wrong b/c I love C-1 and have been a user for a long time now. Also I am interested in seeing what it can actually do.

I am confused on the part of... When I use his profiles in C-1 then change to adobe 1998 for PSCS which is my normal work flow and pretty happy with it, Won't his "colors" change anyways when I tweak in PSCS or any other program. I hope you understand where I am coming from. I really like the 1DsMII files alot. I did however have many, many problems with saturation with my 1Ds in C-1 and in general. Found everything way over saturated for my taste...

Thanks for any more input or if you could post "any" 2 pictures you have used with and with out the profile?
Thanks,
Snook

Just purchased Magne's profiles for the 1D2, and I prefer the one that comes with C1. I also just purchased Fred's Velvia plugin. Although you can do the manipulations yourself and save money, I like being able to rapidly cycle through possible settings - it allows me to think in new directions for an image. What's interesting is that it is highly addictive. When you click on an original image, it often looks way too desaturated, cool, and too low in contrast! Just converted one of my wife's favorite images from her D70 and printed it for her. She was quite impressed with "my" Photoshop skills. LOL!

John

Teski has one imade with colour candy in glasses =)

I would love to show you the difference with that image, but only if Teski allows it =/
so... Teski can I use your image to show the result? =)

I don't have the ETC! besides I do not think it will give YOU the look you seek. As I understand you find the 1Ds over saturated, right? the ETC plugins are increasing saturation even further (from what I see on their page).

personally I like the "velvia" look, and wrote something to give me the image i like, and just wanted to compare it with ETC. (digital velvia, etc)

can you do it on PS? you should! ETC is a colour profile, and should be posible to acheave in PS. Digital Velvia, (etc) are plugins for photoshop, so you can do this too by hand.

why use them? -> saves time, and produces the result with automated easy steps. (and if you are not sure how to get that look, it may take you a looong time of tweaking before you get to it).

is it worthed to pay for ETC? if you like its effects and if you can't reproduce them in PS (or don't have the time) yes, but I'm sure you can get the same result yourself without it. (tho it looks like ETC is very well calibrated)...

Mange's profiles are capture profiles and have nothing to do with working space aRGB, sRGB, etc.

In theory a perfect profile would give you color as you see it at 100% accuracy. It is the profile that is used to convert the RAW data to color. After that you may choose what ever working space profile that fits your needs.

I was not happy with the profiles that came with C1. I tried the ETC profiles

and I like the results. You can get it pretty good with CS but I prefer to get the colors right in my raw converter and us CS for putting the final touch on the tonal levels. This sample is right out of the camera with no work in CS.

This image uses the Daylight profile for the 1Ds that came with C1.

This image uses the ETC Low-saturation profile.

This image uses the ETC High-saturation profile.

Tom, I hope you don't mind, I'll post the effect of the plugins I use with your image for better comparison.

the first one is "straight velvia" and the second one is modified for 1Ds.

the only modification from the above is a filter applied on the Highlights, with parameters: Tint -1, Strength 0.1

here's the result:

the above have enbeded sharpening algorithm, so if you can, don't pay attention to it, it's all about the colours here :)

ps. of course I used the first image, with "Daylight profile" as source.

This is the first time that I understand the difference. No profile gives you a lot more yellow in this pic. The hisat should be nicer all around, but for this particular portrait, I would choose the losat and work from there.

Really,

Thank you.

Fred mirandas?
Thanks for the examples...;-)

no, actually I don't have any of the commercial velvia plugins. This (plugin i use) is something I wrote myself. (and still tweaking it)

if anyone has some of the other velvia plugins out there (aka Fred's, etc) can make one examples from theirs and we can compare the results ;)
