E300 not going to sleep?

OK, I just got an E300 and got about 10 shots on a fully charged battery. I took the shots and then things got kind of busy and I put the camera in my bag without turning it off (I'm sure no one else has ever done this). A couple of hours later I grabbed the camera and the battery is flat. Does this camera not go to sleep?

I looked in the manual on page 132 and it describes the menu and how to adjust the amount of time on the SLEEP mode. The thing is, my camera doesn't seem to have " wrench icon 2 "> SLEEP on the menu and I've cycled through the menus and don't seem to find it anywhere else either. Can anyone clue me in as to what's going on here?

Thanks, Kim

It seems that any button being bumped or touched while in the camera bag will wake up the logic again. The default sleep time is not mentioned but I imagine it should come out of the box at 3 minutes to sleep.

It looks as if you have to find that "wrench 2" setup menu to even get the thing to go back to factory defaults. Page 128.

Aha! Just found page 195 says default sleep time is 1 minute.

It's a twitchy youngster, being only a couple of days old.

Thanks, Kim

Hi Kim,

Have you worked it out yet... If not...

Wrench 2, 7th from the top (you have to scroll down) should be the sleep option, right above PC Mode.

If you still can't find it, can you go to the bottom of that list, and view what firmware version you have?

Regards

Adam.

Adam,

I did get it straightened out, thanks. I was awake most of the night before trying to figure this out. For some reason I just didn't get to the second tab by scrolling down. Doh!

I suppose that if the camera is going to activate itself by a little jostling in the bag, when leave it turned on, I'm going to have to get an extra battery. It just seems too likely that, at some point, I'm going to leave it switched on and put it in the bag.

Didn't you get an extra battery with the kit? I got 2 batteries with mine...

That's interesting. I only got one in my kit. I'm in the USA and maybe it's different elsewhere. I opened a fresh kit box at a department store before ordering mine and it also only had one battery. Maybe you lucked out?!

I'd probably suggest that it must be different here in Oz. In our kit, it was listed that we get an extra battery, the 14-45mm lens, and the battery holder. (Pitty they didn't throw in the release cable with hit :-( )

No extra battery on the UK :-(

Kim, I had the same trouble as you. Even though mine was set to sleep the battery just dies sitting in my camer bag?

I'm going to perform an experiment and just leave the camera switched on asleep and see how long the batter takes to drain.
Could someone else do it as well and we'll compare results?

Hi,
same problem here...

When I left my camera on overnight, it showed me "battery empty" next day. It seems that it only pretends sleeping, while performing an unknown activity...? :)

As a solution I've bought a spare battery and I am trying to be more careful not leaving it on for a longer time.

Ok, I can do that experiment tomorrow.

Well, it does appear that I'm not alone here! I will try the experiment of putting it in my bag turned on without moving it around. My battery went totally flat from fully charged in only three or four hours. I was moving around at least part of that time. I'll try it again with it sitting still. Either way, it's a pain in the .

Hi Kim,

With th E-1, I am fairly sure that when the camera enters the sleep mode and has been asleep for a certain time ( not sure exactly how long ) even pressing a button does not waken it. When this happens I have to turn it off and on again to wake it up. It might appear as a flat battery if you weren't aware of it.

Does anyone know if the E-300 has this function ?

Regards from,

Bob

Like scanning extra-terrestrial for intelligent life? Couldn't help it.

Well, I started a competition with my E-300 yesterday, who will fall asleep as first. :) I couldn't believe it, but I won. After an hour or more, it slept like a top. I woke it up in the morning and was almost hoping for "battery empty" message, but it showed high remaining power. Really strange... Could it be due to more recharging cycles that I've done since the last occurence of the "battery empty" problem? So now I really don't know...
