Hi,

I've been doing heaps of research on the G1 and am seriously considering it as my first digital camera.

I'm interested to know of any major pitfalls, that you weren't aware of, and would have stopped you from buying it if you'd known at the time...

When I rang a large camera dealer in Perth, WA - he told me it's a great camera, but I shoujld consider the Casio MV3500 instead... any thoughts, or comments are appreciated...

Thanks for your help,
I look forward to dropping in often, and learning heaps!

Hello Shaz,

I read many reviews and forums before buying the G1, and just wanted to let you know that although the camera isn't perfect, I am enjoying it greatly and would do it over again. The camera takes some of the best digital pictures I have ever seen, and is not complicated to use. I could've waited for the next generation, etc., but I have only had the camera for a little over a month and I have already taken 1000 shots and I wouldn't have taken a single one if I was still debating. Don't read too much into the reviews, as although they are very helpful, they are very particular and can intimidate or scare off people who otherwise wouldn't have noticed the reviewed flaws of the camera.

It's a great cam, you won't regret it.

Take it easy,

Well there's been much debate about the G1's autofocus system of course.

Personally i've not had problems with it. So i'm kinda putting it down to people not understanding how the AF works: ie. you have to have some contrast near the center of the frame for the camera to forcus on. If you make sure you have that the G1 focusses very nicely.

My niggles with it would have to be:

The magenta cast in blue skies
The tendency to blow out reds
The overexposure of outdoor shots if exposure compensation isn't set to -1/3
The poor colors when using the onboard flash as you sole light source.

All that being said i love my G1. I'm sure had i gotten the nikon 990 there'd be other things i'd be complaining about.

The way i look at it is that the top 3-4 camera's are all pretty close. So you just gota pick the one that suits you the best.

Hi Shaz:

Trust us, G1 is a good camera and has all the features that will give any amateurs the fun to explore. Many of us got great shots if you know how to tame the beast, like any camera.

For US$600, nothing to complain. I'm glad I could afford it. I don't think digicam should be more than US$500. Crazy! Even pretty good Nikon SLR is cheaper than that. It is just digicams are now hot cakes. Fools like us are willing to pay even US$600 and willing to live with their imperfections.

If you think you can spend more dough, hey go for the ones above US$1000. You MAYBE happier.

I agree with all the others replied in this thread.

It's hard to answer this without knowing what your expectations are. Do you currently have a film camera? If so, what kind?

Love the G1. It's been great for me. The prints that the camera produces in conjuction with my epson 1280 is just great. I'm now getting a 256 mg CF because I love what I get in the RAW mode.

I am pleased to hear that you are considering the purchase of a Canon G1. Please keep the Board informed of your progress. I have had to return 4 cameras because of dead/hot pixels, but now that I have the fifth one it is just great, and I am super-content. Just be prepared to some possible rough times in the beginning, but after you weather the initial storm, and make your decision, you will be just fine. As far as the Casio goes, I think that it too is a fine digital camera, with good reviews and it uses normal AA batteries (if you are a battery freak like me). Unfortunately it does not seem to be readily available for purchase except online, and I always try to stick with the market leaders.

I forgot to mention, if this is your first digital camera I don't know why you would want to spend so much money, since there are many less expensive more reliable cameras out there (2 megapixel range, like new Canon A20). If you are very wealthy or you have no financial concerns, then that is a different story. But you might want to consider purchasing something two or three hundred dollars cheaper (US dollars), and then investing the remainder in a good mutual fund.

This is just about exactly what I would say. I had 3 choices--not one bit sorry I chose the G1. I've had it about a month also and taken hundreds of photos--most of which, after I got my act together, were good technically. There are a few I like aesthetically best and I've saved those. However--my lack of saving more has nothing to do with lack on the part of the G1. Personally, I love it and the more I use it and become comfortable with it, the more I do (check the thread on 'what I love---and hate--about my G1).

Diane

Thank you everyone...

Your comments and support have helped me to decide on the G1... and for the 2 days I've had it, I've taken at least a hundred photos.. I love it...

Audleon - I did as you suggested, considered the reviews, but not as "deeply" as I was... no wonder I was so confused...

I'm convinced that my biggest stress and confusion was in choosing, now that I've done that I can settle down and take pics...

After taking photos of everything in sight, I'm already feeling more comfortable and happy with my choice. I started out fully on "AUTO" and am slowly learning about the features one by one..

I'm using the card reader to get the pics into my pc and am amazed at the software and speed of the downloads...

Cost wise, I would have loved to get one for the US price, but I rang around the dealers in Perth and managed to find that prices varied by as much as $500 a shop... I bought the G1 for $1899 AUD, which compared to $2399 is a bargain!!!...

I will be using the camera for business and family pics... taking product shots etc for TV commercials/shows and corporate videos etc.. I've already found another use... taking photos of textures (ground/grass etc..) it may not sound exciting, but it's a great way to get a new "look" as a background for a text graphic in a presentation.

Thanks again, everyone for your honesty and help... you're all a great source of information and insight... I hope at some stage I'll be able to contribute constructively just as you've helped me..

Thanks again
Shaz
