I found this Raw conversion software from a thread posted here and thought I'd try it out. It is really good. The color, detail and noise is excellent...better than PS CS and Viewer. The color is much better than PSCS and the noise levels/speed is better than both of them. It must have an excellent sharpening routine.

Problem with the program is ...it's in Japanese. You can figure it out if you play with it a bit though. I didn't have to adjust the color AT ALL. I sent them an email asking if they have any plans for making an English version...one can hope.

I uploaded the software here if you would like to try it. Adam-T, it would be great to hear your opinion...I know, it's in Japanese. It was a free download. It may have a time limit, but I can't read the info:

Here are some sample converted bird pics from my kitchen sink out the window today. E-300 with 50-200 + 1.4 tele. Most wide open at maximum zoom. Hand-held, ISO 400, 1/500th, spot metering, auto WB.

Here's a 100% Crop from the fist image:

Thanks for the lnk for this. Can you upload an ORF file there too to try? I am considering and it would be helpful. TIA.

Uploading one to the same directory now for you. I'll try to do a few more also.

Forgot to mention that all of these pics were cropped, no noise reduction and sharpened in the SilkyPix program. Also, don't forget, these are through my kitchen window, so the quality is probably not as good as they could be!

Hi Leah,

I notice you are back among us again. Terrific! I love your birds. Here in Northern California we don't have red birds like your Cardinals.

Hope these visits mean you have recovered from your ordeal. I've thought of you and wondered how you were fairing.
Warm Regards,
Lory

That is probably a storm window, and actually has 2 panes of glass. The world's biggest and best UV filter, and 2 thicknesses of it! You may be starting a new trend. ;^)

Great pictures Leah. You done good!

.......and your bird Photos are superb - that 50-200 is a top notch lens, when I tried one on an E1 after being unvelievably dissapointed with the 14-54 (which lost the fight against a G5 of all things and may have been a Dud) , it put the camera in a new perspective.

There are no Cardinals in California? Sounds like it should be part of a song...you know, like...it never rains in California.... You should show us some California birds!

I have good days and bad days, and good days can turn bad...today has been a good one!

Thanks for the kind words,
Leah

you would see this. I just typed in two paragraphs of what I had figured out with the program buttons and sliders when my computer locked %$ &+@!

You'll figure it out. I'll check back and see what you think of it. It's pretty close to the OLY Viewer conversions, but with less noise and the wierd looking...like chicken scratches, in large uniformly colored background areas. Seems much faster than viewer also.

I hope this isn't a total waste of time since it's in Japanese. Who knows maybe there is an english version somewhere on their website now? I couldn't find it though.

Anyone that can read Japanese out there that could lend a hand?

TIA,
Leah

I futzed my way around it setting the sharp pull down to the second from the highest (second from the bottom) the black/white slider thing (sharp again) to full, the what looks like NR slider at its default and saved some out. seems to work well, I'm sure that it'd work better if I knew what I was doing but i'm impressed so far - I don't know how much 8000Yen is in UK£ or if they even plan on an English version but they've put some hard work in there..

A Silky example from me ;-)

Whoa, I'll have to look up how much USA $ that is. You are probably right then. 14 or 30 day trial most likely...bummer.

Can you read on their website anywhere that there might be an English version available?

Thanks,
Leah
It costs 8000 Yen so I guess it will stop working at some point.

........When I sold the SD9 to go back to a Canon body as a backup to my 1D (1DS now) I missed all the messing about with weird beta raw converters, manual lens adapters (Pentax K and M42 in the Sigma's case) and bodging about to get more from it - I missed messing about with scruffy old lenses found on E-Bay for a tenner and hanging out with a neat bunch of loonies (the Sigma SLR forum are great!)

My photographic life is pretty humdrum involving loads of post processing of boring commercial shots for deadlines, using a camera which the village idiot could take pin sharp pics with in P mode (the 1DS + 28-70L) which is why I'm here all the time, I log on inbetween Processing batches to keep me SANE ..

then I decided to get an E300 to replace my D60 as backup and Pro1 as big-Digicam and it's all coming back ;-) I've got the OM lens adapter coming, a couple of OM lenses from my brothers old dusty rig and I've been looking on E-Bay again - then there's the weird RAW converters etc - I know this forum isn't as wacky as the Sigma one (and by and large not as congenial either) but the essence is there :)..

lenses with the E-Mount system. I thought when I got the E-1, great, I won't have to always be looking for that next great lens. Then came the Oly lens adapter!

If playing with Raw converters keeps you sane, then this Oly forum is a lucky bunch to gain all the insights you gather from testing these programs! I for one have found your posts very helpful.

This really is a great forum, I'm sure you'll find some wacky people around soon to make you feel more at home ;-).
