Have FZ20 - which DLSR to buy instead ?

I am on the same boat too so this is my 2 cents:

1. I have a FZ15 and it is great fun.

2. ISO 100, OIS can help me get a clean shot at shutter speed as low as 1/2 handheld in low light situations. The brisk performance of SD card is way cool!

3. Noise at ISO 400 is an issue because I need high ISO to maximize shooting opportunity in low light in combination with OIS.

So...in conclusion...low noise at high ISO and OIS is a must (low noise is slightly more important). That leaves me with few choices at the price level that I can afford.

A. EOS 10D/20D/300D with IS glass
B. Nikon D1X/D100/D70 with VR glass
C. Minolta Maxxum 7D

I won't consider other SLR-like cameras (KM a200, nikon 8800) because they are the same as your panasonic.

If stabilization is near the top of your priorities list, the KM D7D is a spectacular value. Great cam all around and arguably the best ergonomically of any DSLR. More epensive than D70, E-300, E-1, Rebel, ist DS. About equal to the 20D in price.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

i bought an olympus e300 for christmas. i am in love with the camera. i sold my fz10 today. the oly takes great pics right out of the camera. i shoot in raw. the iso 400 is great for no-flash interior shots. the quality of my pictures improved 100% since buying this camera. i also got the 14-54mm lens. great glass!!!
i will miss the lumix zoom, but i gained so much more with my new slr.

Wow.. The D70 is a lot bigger than I thought. Looks like a pretty big load to haul around. What size is that lens?
I like the size of D70 but I haven't been packing it around much yet.

Micra,

KonicaMinolta 7D has in-camera antishake. So any lens brings you image stablization. As a general rule, top quality SLR lens has smaller zoom ratio, such as 28-70, 70-200 etc for the f2.8 constant aperture zooms. The set up will be much heavier and more expensive than FZ20. A prudent approach is to identify the limitations of your current system and type of photography you are interested in first. Then you can review the different systems and seek advise from the forums.

Good luck,

Mapleaf
Hi.

I have FZ20 and FL28. I have thought about change to DSLR. Of
course it’s difficult to see which DSLR I should buy. It’s my
problem, I know that. But one of the biggest problem when buying
something like that, is the lens.

We have a good LEICA-lens, so if I want a lens with the range about
30-200 mm (digital range), which do you think is the best, compared
to our LEICA, when we speak about sharpness and brightness/aperture.

Who want a good camera body with a bad lens?

I have thought about Canon 300D or Nikon D70 - but ….?

Any suggestions?

And the same thing will happen when you try to buy any pentax accesories or a Pentax lens, you will not be able to see it before you buy it and you will have to wait to get it.

If you decide to buy a Pentax DSLR I do recommend you buy a Pentax lens and NOT a Sigma lens because Sigma lenses are not 100% compatible with Pentax DSLR, auto focus issues with no solution in sight, a very cruel hoax.

There is a lot more to choosing a camera than size and weight, if that was the only criteria then Phil's reviews would be a lot shorter :-))

I humbly suggest that you try the camera for more than 5 minutes before buying and buy it in a store that will aloow you a few weeks to exchange it if for any reason you and the camera are not compatible.

I still suggest the D70 is a better choice with the Nikor 18-70 kit lens.

Had the opportunity 2004 Father's day weekend at the Cincinnati Zoo...

(Nikon days with local distributor)

Lay down your driver's license & get use of Nikon gear in the zoo... choose from P&S to biggest stuff... requiring mono or tripods.

Nikon guy examined the FZ10 I had, and hooked me up with d70 and a fixed 300mm f4 VR Nikkor lens. I happened to have a 256Mb CF card in a kodak DX4900...so I got to use my own card & keep the pics.

Wife and I strolled, shooting with both FZ10 and the d70/300mm for the next couple hours.

BOTH cameras got keeper pics, both cameras got throw-aways.
d70 was faster focus, shallower depth of field
both occasionally missed the focus, especially in lower light

I didn't have/take the time to learn all the manual controls on the d70; I suspect it has a LOT of capabilities I didn't touch.

End of the day evaluation:
FZ10 is a FUN/capable camera
d70 was WORK shooting...like holding a BRICK with a STOVEPIPE lens
I take my FZ10 everywhere ... not sure I'd take $$$$ dSLR as often.

Still, a dSLR does bring along capabilities which may be valuable to some.

Hey Wally,

Regarding this issue I have tested the Sigma lens I tested with the MZ-60 that I found this problem with, and I can't replicate it with the DS, don't mean to be rude but has anyone replicated this problem with the new DS and any of the DC or DG lenses from Sigma. I have 4 sigma lenses and have tried and tried but can't replicate this problem on the DS, only on the MZ-60 with one of the four lenses......

You will really like the ds once you've had a feel of it and you must be comfortable with your camera to start with. Yes its true that the sigma lenses have their limitations but overall its still a good carry around lens (18-125) I have purchased a few primes as well (didnt have time to include in pic) from ebay and finding some of the older "A" lenses to be extremely sharp and i am having a lot of fun with this camera! Lens compatabillity is a BIG winner! You wont look back ,but if you have lots of $$$ and dont mind carrying around a "Brick" then go for the D70 ,they are a very capable camera as well! Good luck

I don't know if anyone has tested for the Sigma problem with a Ds

Auto focusing issues with Sigma lenses seem to be accross all DSLR brands so the safest thing is to buy the same brand lens and body, with Pentax that is near impossible.

A few days ago you posted on this forum that you couldn't buy Panasonic parts so you got rid of the FZ20 to buy a Pentax.

I posted that it would be worse, you posted that there are lots of places in Australia selling Pentax gear and provided links, yet I note that you purchased a Sigma EX 50mm lens because you there is no Pentax 50mm in stock.

Ok your girlfriend has Pentax lenses you can use, that is great, but it doesn't help me.

The sigma Auto Focus issues, you have to know what to look for, on some lenses it is not a big a deal on others it is a disaster, I took me 13000 pics over 6 moths before I discovered what the real problem was, it reared its ugly head when I spent over $3000 on some supposedly good EX f2.8 lenses, the lenses are great when focused manually but they do not auto focus correctly on my *istD or anyone else's *istd.

I purchased the Sigma lenses because I could not buy Pentax lenses without ordering paying up front sight unseen and waiting and waiting.

Nothing has changed, and it isn't only happening in Australia if you search the Pentax forum you will see, the DA 16-45 was released months ago, try buying one in Australia.

I regret the day I purchased my Pentax *istD, problems form day one and 8 moths later still sorting them out with no end in sight, I would hate to see anyone else go through all that when it can be avoided..

I have thought of junking the entire lot or taking legal action against CRK if the matter is not resolved soon, I would not even contemplate selling it to someone else when I know does NOT work properly, I do have ethics.

I will soon be visiting the Sydney office of CRK [Australian pentax and sigma importers] and test the Ds amongst other things.

The problems with the *istD and Sigma lenses was easily replicated by CRK with their own stock [3 different new lenses and different *istD bodies] 4 months ago and by lots of others on teh pentax forum, yet CRK continue to sell sigma lenses bundled with pentax cameras fully aware that there is a problem and they do NOT have any answers.

The most frustrating thing with Pentax is that you cannot buy anything without having to treat the entire excercise as a very precise patient [lots of patience required] excercise, in the end you either buy third party like Sigma [you did that too because they had no stock, am I right?] or buy it sight unseen and hope for the best, that is what most people do.

You cannot walk into a camera store or even the importers wharehouse and see and handle the Pentax gear BEFORE YOU ORDER!

The size thing on a DSLR, is not important in the scheme of things, it may seem like it at first, I thought so too, I was wrong, it is a "gimmick" no more no less.

Obsessing about the size of a DSLR then attaching a battery grip and a 10lb lens, come on!

When I struck problems with the *istD and decided to look further afield I got the D70, yes it is a bit bigger, my better half prefered the D70 size and the way she could get her fingers around the grip very comfortably, the weight of the body is no big deal differences in lens weight will make a bigger difference, the D70 feels better in my hands.

I had no problems whatsoever with my D70 for the short 3 weeks I owned it before it was stolen, even thieves prefer the D70 :-))

Funny thing is people go wow about the size of the *istD then buy a grip to bring the size up to something that is usable, doesn't make sense to me, with the Ds you don't have that option [no Ds battery grip] so you are stuck with that small size which looks great initially but is impractical long term, a sales gimmick.

Speed of operation auto focus, shot to shot, preview and burst, file sizes, 13 megabyte raw files when everyone else has 5 megabyte raw files! those are far more important.

That is what I really like about the D70 and my FZ20 SPEED!! they are very similar imho.

My Pentax *istD is slow, no I am not into sports photography, but just like when you use a slow PC it doesn't matter what you are doing it is slow, when you have previously used a faster PC it is disturbingly slow.

There is more to it than just the camera. The 200mm f2.8 lens zoom lens in the range you want would be big & heavy. I have no clue about pentax lenses but canon 70-200 f2.8 is 3lb and big. You don't buy dSLRs just by looking at the cameras.
