It seems , by the few comments form new owners, that the 995 may be better than the reviews we've seen on the 995.

What about red-eye reduction with the pop-up flash?

What about LCD viewing in bright sunlight?

Tried testing the auto-sharpening in-camera (+1 etc) against pix without auto-sharpening and withPhotoshop?

Does microdrive work with it - really?

Any faster shot sequences?

Does any new owner have a 990 to compare the low-light focus & edge focus?

Other additional questions?

This is nothing new for the coolpix range...it is the best digicam easily.

I have a 995 since one day and a half. Phil review used version 1.1 my unit has version 1.5. I find it better then in the reviews. I don't see this fuzzy pictures on the corners. I will put some pics up as soon the zing web site is accessable.
What about red-eye reduction with the pop-up flash?
I did some flash shots from people with blue eyes (blue eyes are more sensitive for red eye pictures). Some of my shots showed red eyes but it is very reasonable. Remember I didn't turn the red eye reduction on yet. Will try tomorrow.
What about LCD viewing in bright sunlight?
Can't tell it yet. It was cloudy so far, but I used to have a Sony S70 and I think it is better. The LCD display itself is very very nice and sharp, again much better then the S70.
Tried testing the auto-sharpening in-camera (+1 etc) against pix

I use flash.
Any faster shot sequences?
Don't know.

focus?
I took a lot of shots in low light. If you can see the subject in the LCD display the 995 focus without problem. If the subject is not visible, you have a problem but since the 990/995 can choice from 5 focus areas, I found it easy to get a focus lock. If you find somewhere a little light reflection and you are OK. I tried it on about 20 shots now in different conditions.
Other additional questions?
It sounds you have a 990 but if not read this:

In the beginning when I used the camera I thought, this device is too complex (I went straight to manual mode), but now after many many shots I start to get the feel for it. This unit gives so well controls how you want to take a shot, it's unbelievable. When I use the manual focus I can judge on the LCD display when a subject is in focus. This is a great feeling.

If you like the camera controls YOU, buy another brand. If YOU want to control the camera, buy an Nikon.

Thanbks for the input to my questions - Please follow up with the other tests is possible

I did some more testing.

First the sharpening in the corners. The review says that the lens is less sharp in the corners. I tried everything. I took many many test shot and I can't find a difference between center and corner sharpness of the lens.

One example ( look at the Nikon box horizontal line and try to find out if these are less visual in the corners):

Concerning the LCD display. Today we had a decent sunny day in Belgium. I can't see any problem to work in direct sunlight. I took a lot of macro shot when the sun was right on and still could judge if my subject was in focus. No reflection on the LCD screen. So much better then my previous Sony S70 camera. I'm suprised, I didn't expected this because the reviews were not that positive.

I only have 2 complains about the 995.

1) The batteries last about 114 pictures (with difficult macro shots and 30% of time with "AF continues" ON). The problems is it takes 6.5 hours to charge the battery, I can't believe this, soo slow. My Sony S70 battery charge took about max 2 hours. Lucky I have 2 batteries but if you finish shooting 114 shots within 6,5 hours you may need 3 batteries. You really have to make sure you have both batteries charged before you start your day, if you expect to take a lot of shots.

2) Slow lens: F2.6 is still OK but when you zoom in at x4, the maximum opening is F5.0. My Sony S70 didn't have that problem, the F values didn't change that much with zooming. So I take a lot of shots at ISO 200 to be able to use the zoom without flash.
I hope this helps. If you have some other questions please let me know.

Jan, Thanks for the update - especially on the sharpness.

However, I'm not sure I understand the redeye picture. Is the camera better about redeye or not. Have you taken enough pictures to really tell yet? By the way, I lived in Wezembeek in the 1970's. Love Belgium - I think it is the heart of Europe - easy top get to anywhere - great for picture taking.

Hi Jan!

I don't understand your issue with the long charging time of the battery. This is the same battery (EN-EL 1) as used with the CP880 right? I NEVER did experience such a long charging time with my battery. Although I never measured it, it was certainly not longer than 1 or 2 hours.

Maybe the batteries take longer to charge overseas than in the U.S.A. Electricity different? Just a thought...

The long battery charge is maybe related to the battery charger itself. The model delivered with the 995 is the MH-50.
Does the 880 have a different model?

Jan, as one of many here in the US still waiting for the 995, thanks for the info.

There still seems to be a lot of conflicting review and anecdotal testimony regarding focus/resolving power of the lens. Any impressions? Anybody got an 880 charger for sale? (kidding).FJBrad

I can't be more pleased with the results I get so far. This is my first Nikon, yesterday I was busy with resolution test shots (boring).

Today I'm a little bit more creative and must say I'm very impressed with this device (sharpeness, color balance, swivel experience, focus handling, camera shape and feeling, macro, flash, exposure metering system, action shots, camera start up time, LCD display).
The sun was brighter today so LCD was less visual but still useful.

first Nikon, yesterday I was busy with resolution test shots
(boring).
Today I'm a little bit more creative and must say I'm very
impressed with this device (sharpeness, color balance, swivel
experience, focus handling, camera shape and feeling, macro, flash,
exposure metering system, action shots, camera start up time, LCD
display).
The sun was brighter today so LCD was less visual but still useful.

Jan
Jan, thanks again for your posts and enduring the tedious testing on our behalf when I'm sure your ready to go out and do some real photography. I've been shooting with a 950and 990 for over a year and am still awestruck at the cababilities of these little wonders. Everything from macro/microscopy to telephoto/astrophotography, IR, pano, easy multiflash setups. And that's before editing tweaks. I'm stoked. I recommend Peter iNova's E-book if you don't already have it ( check for 995 upgrade ) http://www.digitalsecrets.net

David,

I took today some more flash shots. With the red-eye reduction ON and OFF. If you turn ON, no red eyes. The same subject in OFF position red-eye comes back. I tried several shots. Really impressive.

Thanks for loving Belgium.
Jan
First the sharpening in the corners. The review says that the lens
is less sharp in the corners. I tried everything. I took many many
test shot and I can't find a difference between center and corner
sharpness of the lens.
One example ( look at the Nikon box horizontal line and try to find
out if these are less visual in the corners):

The full size original look at:

A picture of the slow flash see below:

Picture red eye ( I didn't use the red eye reductions).

Concerning the LCD display. Today we had a decent sunny day in
Belgium. I can't see any problem to work in direct sunlight. I
took a lot of macro shot when the sun was right on and still could
judge if my subject was in focus. No reflection on the LCD screen.
So much better then my previous Sony S70 camera. I'm suprised, I
didn't expected this because the reviews were not that positive.

I only have 2 complains about the 995.
1) The batteries last about 114 pictures (with difficult macro
shots and 30% of time with "AF continues" ON). The problems is it
takes 6.5 hours to charge the battery, I can't believe this, soo
slow. My Sony S70 battery charge took about max 2 hours. Lucky I
have 2 batteries but if you finish shooting 114 shots within 6,5
hours you may need 3 batteries. You really have to make sure you
have both batteries charged before you start your day, if you
expect to take a lot of shots.
2) Slow lens: F2.6 is still OK but when you zoom in at x4, the
maximum opening is F5.0. My Sony S70 didn't have that problem, the
F values didn't change that much with zooming. So I take a lot of
shots at ISO 200 to be able to use the zoom without flash.
I hope this helps. If you have some other questions please let me
know.

Jan
It seems , by the few comments form new owners, that the 995 may be
better than the reviews we've seen on the 995.
I have a 995 since one day and a half. Phil review used version
1.1 my unit has version 1.5. I find it better then in the reviews.
I don't see this fuzzy pictures on the corners. I will put some
pics up as soon the zing web site is accessable.
What about red-eye reduction with the pop-up flash?
I did some flash shots from people with blue eyes (blue eyes are
more sensitive for red eye pictures). Some of my shots showed red
eyes but it is very reasonable. Remember I didn't turn the red eye
reduction on yet. Will try tomorrow.
What about LCD viewing in bright sunlight?
Can't tell it yet. It was cloudy so far, but I used to have a
Sony S70 and I think it is better. The LCD display itself is very
very nice and sharp, again much better then the S70.
Tried testing the auto-sharpening in-camera (+1 etc) against pix
without auto-sharpening and withPhotoshop?
Will try later.
Does microdrive work with it - really?
I use flash.
Any faster shot sequences?
Don't know.
Does any new owner have a 990 to compare the low-light focus & edge
focus?
I took a lot of shots in low light. If you can see the subject in
the LCD display the 995 focus without problem. If the subject is
not visible, you have a problem but since the 990/995 can choice
from 5 focus areas, I found it easy to get a focus lock. If you
find somewhere a little light reflection and you are OK. I tried it
on about 20 shots now in different conditions.
Other additional questions?
It sounds you have a 990 but if not read this:
In the beginning when I used the camera I thought, this device is
too complex (I went straight to manual mode), but now after many
many shots I start to get the feel for it. This unit gives so well
controls how you want to take a shot, it's unbelievable. When I use
the manual focus I can judge on the LCD display when a subject is
in focus. This is a great feeling.
If you like the camera controls YOU, buy another brand. If YOU
want to control the camera, buy an Nikon.

FJBrad,
Thanks for the suggestion. I was planning to order the book as

the end of June, now that I started to get a great feeling with the
camera, I certainly will order it this week.
Does the e-book already explains the 995?
The 995 990 950 all have a lot in common, so much of the Ebook info would be relevant, however a lot of the specifics on 995 camera settings and menus may be lacking or different. The CD also has a lot of general photography tips and PS filters. I don't know how far along iNova is on the 995 version but I'm sure he must be working on it. Maybe you should wait, or buy it now if he'll agree to send you the upgraded CD when it comes out.

Message I got from INova on the book upgrade to 995
"{Not soon, but later this summer. If you can wait--then wait for it.

Otherwise the current version would get you started quicker. 90+% of the 995is in the 990 chapter. The entire rest of the eBook is the same. Upgrades later will be $10."

Does it really take 6.5 hours to charge the battery, or is this just how long they recommend charging a brand new battery used for the first time? I can charge the batteries for my 880 in about 1-2 hours.

It really takes that long every time. I recharged same battery at least 3 times.

I read the seperate manual of MH-50/51 battery charger and the spec says 6.5 hours.
