Hi Paul,

yes that would have been very nice, I was at the Archives (looking forward to your post, I have some 12mm shots from the inside but nothing special) the 5th of december, and was in DC from the 3rd up to the 6th, just a short time but I took some nice snapshots. I wish I could have had some more time with dusk, only a few usuable minutes each day... oh well I guess I'll have to come back, maybe we can meet up then :)

Thanks for commenting.

Excellent shots, Sander, I love the colors! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Sven, thanks for commenting,
I assume that the one below was taken with the 12-24 DX, but at
what focal length? Its widest?
Yes indeed, 12mm with f/4, ISO 500 and 0.8 seconds handheld from across the street right up to the curb to be able to get as close to the passing taxi's as possible, I have some more shots from a few yards further away and it's no problem at all fitting the whole building into the frame.

Hope this answers your question, if not I can elaborate with examples.

Cheers,

For the St Patricks building I used manual exposure at f/4 with 0.8 seconds at ISO 500 and WB of 2800 Kelvin (set manually after chimping).

For the Chrysler building shot which I took from the Empire State Building, I used a tripod with ISO 200, shot at 90mm with the 70-200 (VR off), with an f/13 10 seconds exposure. WB at set at 5550 Kelvin and changed to 3850 in ACR.

Then there's the starbucks shot, handheld at 1/6th of a second with f/5 at ISO 200.

The skewed empire state building was taken at dusk, tripod supported at ISO 200 with an exposure of 0.7 seconds at f/5.6, taken at 95mm with the 70-200 VR.

Hope this helps, if you have any remaining questions please feel free to ask away. Cheers,

Wow, tjese are some of the greatest artsy photos I have seen. This is an awesome job. I would like to know more on how this was done and was any Photoshop was used on them or flters.

Thanks for sharing,

Melissa

yes B&H sure was nice to visit, but that store is a bit too hectic for me, with lines and baskets and what not, I think I prefer a bit hingher prices and more personal service but that's just me ;)

The flag was a big painting in the MoMA, which I framed zoomed in and held level at first, than held it still and pulled about via zoom-twirl, that's holding the lens by the zoom collar and turning the camera and zooming out while doing it. Hope I don't sound too complicated, it's done faster than describing it that's for sure :)

Thanks for the comment, I'll post some more soon, I'm copying the last card as I'm typing, it has the Steven F Udvar Hazy center on it :)

I used a Lee filter, ND 0.6 Graduated, for the 12mm Statue of Liberty shot, but the rest was taken with just a UV filter.

I did a lot of conversion work on these, shot the photos in NEF and used Photosop Camera Raw to convert them, I frequently pushed the contrast slider and the shadows slider, also the vignette slider together with the exposure slider to focus the subject in the center. Also I callibrated some of the colors with saturation in the last ACR tab. After the conversion I just donwsized and sharpened for web, no work in Photoshop except for spot removal where spots appeared, I have a very dirty sensor and will have it cleaned soon because all the PS dust removal is a nag ;)

So that's basically it, ACR conversion for contrast and color, and than resizing. Thanks for commenting Melissa, glad you liked them :)

Hoi Hans,

I got plenty more where these came from, but it's hard to make a 'sequal' post to the first bunch of keepers. B&H was fun to see but I knew I had no money at all so I didn't bother with any idea's :(

Yes, I met up with Marije in DC, she knocked on my door 30 minutes after I had arrived at the Watergate, and had a wonderfull time in the zoo and the museums, hwich were both great. I also have some Giant Panda shots shich I'll post some time.

Thanks for commenting Hans.

So I just came back from a short vacation (please read no further
if you are offended by such trivial posts...)

I won't go as far as to call these photos 'Artistic', so I'll call
them 'Artsy'.
What I mean is I zoomed, skewed and moved a lot during the creation
of these shots, and than used some unsual ACR conversion techniques
pumping color and contrast to a 'pleasing' level.

All shots taken with D2h with either a 70-200 VR or a 12-24 DX, the
difference is of course apparent. Most often long shutterspeeds,
handheld or tripod supported, ISO usually at 800 or up, sometimes
(tripod) as low as 200 which is atypical for me.

So here's a small number of the grand total, taken recently in New
York & Washington, I have to thank Janet, RFC, James, Brent, Ron
and others for helping me out in the preparation for the trip, I
appreciate it a lot!

Guggenheim:

Empire state:

Statue of liberty:

MoMA:

Starbucks:

St Patricks (0.8 seconds handheld!)

Chrysler from ESB:

Washington Monument:

Lincoln at dusk:

Seagull in my shadow:

National Archives:

If you have any questions about any of these feel free to ask, even
though this post is just for showing you some photos, if I can help
anyone with some information I would be more than happy to. Thanks
for watching these :)
