No Photoshop!

  • Nearly as powerful as an advanced verion of PS
  • Includes additional graphic-art-oriented tool (better than in PS!)
  • when installed on my platform (PC - PentiumIV - Windows XP), some GIMP's advanced fuctions caused system crash
  • Even harder to master than PS7 (not exactly what Jarrell was looking for, if my understanding is correct).
What about IRFANVIEW? (I don't know anything about it)

The info on Gimp was in response to LeRoym33's request for help on the Gimp, obviously not as a solution for Jarrells question about a simple digital manipulation program.

Take a look at photofiltre it works well and it's free!

OK, not everyone has Photoshop or even wants it, nor do they have
Paintshop Pro or Elements... so... what is a good editing program
for them? For under..., say.. $40 U.S.. that doesn't take a degree
to learn how to use. One that'll let'em crop, resize, reasonalbly
good color corrections and sharpening, you know.. all the basic
stuff. Heck, I'd even like one like that myself sometimes...:)
Any suggestions or recommendations?

Hadn't heard of this before so thanks Tim. Picasa seems like a good way to manage/view pictures, I'm trying it out now; even has export to web page, which I had used BreezeBrowser and IrfanView for.

I seethat IrfanView has already been mentioned. Great for batch renaming/converting/resizing all at once. Has thumbnail browser and can show EXIF info. Also has redeye removal. But it lacks Unsharp Mask, unfortunately. However, it is free and it continues to grow. Its associated Plug-ins should be included, since one is for Canon RAW conversion (EXIF is another). Good all-round small program.

I did not see the product ACDSEE in the other posts. It is an option you may want to investigate. I use version 6 but ver 7 is the latest. It does a lot of things. Decent photo browser, A fair number of standard editing tools

plus simple resizing and lots of print options. I still prefer to use Elements for critical editing but if your looking to cover several areas as well as editing it may be worth a look for you.

How does the rebate work if you don't have a previous version of
elements? The way I read the rebate you need to be a previous
user of a PS product or the competitions'.
Surely you know someone with an old scanner. They almost all came with something that can be used for the upgrade. I used PS LE that was 5 years old.

I think 8 is the latest version. FWIW, I have stopped using it (after many years) in significant part because it insists on working in pixels rather than inches or mm and it is just too inconvenient when you need to get to a particular size for printing purposes.

Regards,
I've used photoimpact for it's red-eye removal at work. It has a
whole suite of Photo-shoppy type tools. I think the current
incarnation in 7.0 but it might tend to be over the 40 dollar
limit. BUt in searching for photoimpact on froogle.com i found a
couple versions under the limit.

I agree Patrick. I upgraded myself to PS CS but I still have Elements on my daughter's computer. Moreover, Hidden Power really does the job when you want to use Elements to match PS itself.

IMHO Elements is all you really need.

. . . PS Elements coupled with Hidden Power is most everything
anyone will need; including those using PS7. I've recently
upgraded to PS7 and still have no problems stating this. PSE +
Hidden Power = unbelievable value compared to big PS.

I downloaded the Gimp but so far I have not been able to open it. I have tried everything I know to get it open but no luck so far. I downloaded it to a Zip disc and also a CD and cannot open either one.
Any ideas ? Thanks, Leroy

Hey thanks John, I finally got it open but in looking at it maybe I should go for the printed version. I ordered the Epson 4180 scanner that comes with Elements 2 and it was shipped today. So I will see what that looks like. It's kind of overwhelming at first like a lot of things are. Anyway thanks again ,I appreciate the help. LeRoy

There's no end of them, Jarrell, but they come and go. If you're not lucky, you'll spend hours learning how to use a program that winds up being a dead end. And with a secondary program, there won't be many experienced users on the forums that you can turn to for help. That's why I suggest Photoshop Elements to every newcomer. It's affordable, has many automated corrections, but can also be used in "manual mode" to do very sophisticated things as the user gains skill. In that sense, it's a perfect analog to a Coolpix camera. As a capper, there are tons of experienced Photoshop users on the forums that will help with any problems.

From the "For What It's Worth" department...

Although I'm not completely computer illiterate, I know VERY LITTLE about photography and EVEN LESS about post-processing!

I'm currently using PS Elements 2.0. I'm very happy with the results i get, the "quick" and/or "easy" options really are quick and easy, yet I could really apply myself to it, and there would be enough to learn to keep me busy for a long time. And I can personally vouch for UF's comments about learning a program through the NTF posts and members.
I love this place!

the editing it can do is pretty limited, but enough for some of the folks who use it to manage their photos.

PSE is an extremely capable program and well worth its cost. The nice thing about it is there are virtually scores of actions (like Bud Guinn's stuff) that work in Elements and the RAW conversion works very well with NEF files. Although there are probably many free programs, you get what you pay for. It's hard to beat Abode.
