I am a mac user. I have just started shooting digital for some jobs using D100.

Yesterday i did 10 situations each of about 100 images. Today i have to edit them down to the best 5 to 10 of each situation.

Easy with contact sheets and a loop but a nightmare with the nikon software or anything else i can find on the net.

Is there a simple programe out there that can allow you to preview each image in a situation and give tags keep or discard. And then sort by tag?

So simple but what can do it.

Please help

There are plenty on the market, but the one that I use is Photo Mechanic from Camera Bits ( http://www.camerabits.com ). It allows batch re-naming, captioning and easy tagging and sorting. You can copy and save in various ways and you will find a lot of photojournalists running this softwaree because it is both fast and powerful.

If that doesn't suit you, there will be an OSX version of Fotostation soon and I-View Media Pro might suit your needs too.

HI Brett

I've tried various 'pay' software, and although it's not perfect, I've found iphoto is actually very good - I don't download from the camera in to it, but create a new album and then drop screen sized photos in from their original folders (leaving the originals in place). The categorisation options (using keywords) is pretty good.

You've already got it, and it's free, so at least it's worth giving it a try.

I have tried LOTS of software for the PC and I still envy all Mac users since they have iView Media Pro available (www.iview-multimedia.com).

There is a new version 2.0 and it will be released for Windows by the end of 2003.

From all I have seen this beast really kicks butt. But it's not cheap: $ 160. But you get rebates if you crossgrade from a similar product.

I wouldn't go spending too much money on photo sorting/managing software just yet. The next version of Mac X looks like it will have a killer search and browse feature built right into the o/s. Watched Steve Jobs do his presentation on this and it was quite impressive on how well and quickly it worked. You might be able to check out the apple website for more info. When I saw it the first thing I thought of was that one could do quite well without installing any photo sorting/managing program by just using the o/s search feature.

But if you are going to go for a specific program give iView a try. It is a terrific program!

It has an option to display RAW files at 1/2 resolution, which really speeds things up. I tried it for a couple of weeks and just paid the shareware fee which is $35 or so. It's much faster than Nikon View on them Mac, and IPhoto won't read the RAW files.

Hi,

I've come to like PhotoReviewer from sticksoftware.com. (or find it on versiontracker.com)

Does one thing only--reviews photos quickly and lets you approve or discard them. Works for both RAW and JPGS.

Fotostation have been promising a OSX version for some time, I am waiting for it. It won't be cheap, I expect the pro version to be £500 ish.
