Windows XP - general comments

The previous Windows XP thread got very large, I'd like to section off general Windows XP quesitons from the conversations/suggestions about digital imaging. Please use this thread to continue discussions about general XP issues, if warranted.

There was a lot of discussion on the previous thread related to product activation.

Microsoft believes in protecting intellectual property rights. Piracy is a global problem that affects everyone, and it's not just counterfeiting that's the problem. Product activation is aimed at reducing a form of piracy called casual copying. Casual copying accounts for at least 50% of pirated installations of software products. In developing product activation, Microsoft has developed a technology for protecting intellectual property that is easy to use, unobtrusive, and protects their privacy. Activating Windows takes just a few seconds and is completely anonymous. I recommend that people get a beta copy of Windows XP and try out activation to see for themselves how Microsoft has developed the feature.

I also got some more info to answer some questions that people had:

(1) If you can't activate your copy of Windows via an internet connection, you will have to call Microsoft. It will be a toll-free number, and the average call should be about 2.5 minutes.

(2) If a person significantly changes their hardware configuration, they will have to re-activate their copy of Windows XP. Currently, this requires a call into the same toll-free number referenced in point #1.

I think we've already covered most of the ground reroduct activation, but I wanted to pass along this information. Hopefully it won't start another large amount of posts, but I will answer any new questions if they come up.

This may be off topic, but it would be nice to have interface to access Outlook Express message store programmatically. Or at least file format description of OE message store files, so developers can write utilities to manage/archive OE mailboxes.

I often find a need for a second clipboard to keep two different items in temporary storage. Although this relates to IE, I would love it if IE would stop other windows from automatically popping up without my permision.

Rick...I was wondering if XP will let you print the contents of any folder...For example...I have hundreds of mp3 files in many different folders...And I would love to be able to print all the file names in any particular folder...In Win98 there doesn't seem to be any way of printing the contents of any folder. Will this feature be in XP?

I don't know if XP has that feature, but try WhereIsIt cataloguing software. It has a report generator that works well for that purpose.

Try PopUp Stopper, freeware from
http://www.panicware.com

Works almost too good. by default it stops all new IE window generation. To override, say to start an additional IE session, just hold down the Ctrl key.

No, Windows XP does not inclue a feature to do this. You should investigate 3rd party options such as WhereIsIt mentioned below.

I am very impressed with Windows XP. It is very fast, stable and has a much improved user interface. Someone obviously thought about reducing mouse movement.

Rick, I have now had a chance to try out the Digital Camera Wizard you wrote. I like it a lot. XP doses not seam to see my G1 as a camera. I’ve been downloading with Zoom Browser, which works fine. Do I need to load the Canon twain driver besides the default install of the camera software?

XP (at least RC2, as far as i know) should recognize the G1 as a new device just fine and the new device wizard would kick in to let you install the driver. The Windows 2000 drivers (TWAIN based) has been spotty on XP, including the latest 3.7.1. For example, ZoomBrowser EX would let you pull the images, work with the G1. But, PS/LE 5.0 would not see the G1 at all.

I understand the Canon folks are working very hard to get the new drivers ready for XP. In the mean time, cf reader is best to move the pictures onto an XP system.

Two nights ago installed XP RC2. I spent last night testing the printing wizard against Photoshop, QImage (demo), and PhotoDeluxe (I use this to print multiple different prints on the same page). I had everything set to use ICM profiles. There was absolutely no difference in color or print quality! You guys did a great job. I can wait to get the final release.

Win95 had a copy names to clipboard function. Win95B removed it.

It was a horrible move in my opinion and has made me work harder to do the same type of worker.

Got Win XP running but it doesn't recognize my FujiFilm S1 Pro. Tried the Win98 and Win2K drivers to no avail and there is no info or support at the FujiFilm website.

I posted a comment yesterday about WinXP RC2 not recognizing my FujiFilm FinePix S1Pro. However, the WinXPHardware.txt file dated 08/06/01 which has a link pointing to it at http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/ includes the following line under the "Imaging" section:

Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro (MSC)

As this camera connects as a USB device, why doesn't "USB" appear in the parentheses instead of "MSC," and what does "MSC" stand for anyway? Perhaps I am missing something here and I would appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide.
