I just got a call from Harris (Backdoctor) and he says that he has evacuated his family, pets and the most cherished possessions from his house in Florida. He is on the road to the Atlanta area (Roswell) where he has rooms being held for him. Everybody is fine but tired. Like him, I sincerely hope his house will survive this hurricane.

This is the second "don't mess around" hurricane in three weeks. Friends of mine had just taken down the last of the plywood and tape from the last hurricane when they had to start over again. The "little" ones down at force 2 or so are great photo ops, mostly because if you're out shooting you're not shaking with fear that you're going to get impaled by a flying object. But this force 4 stuff - I'd want to be on high ground, and under ground...

Hopefully they all fair well.

It would be a pity to have him have to rebuild his shop again.

I used to live in the same town as Harris before I moved to CT in 2000. The last hurricane season we were there we evacuated when a big one was coming at us. We left at midnight and drove and drove and drove. All the hotels were booked up through norther Alabama. We drove 600 miles to Fort Walton Beach to stay with family there before turning around the next morning. The stinking hurricane turned north shortly after we left but we had no idea until we got to northern Florida (no radio coverage). A few weeks later another hurricane was coming at us and we said to hck with it. That one went right over our area, luckily it was fairly small.

We got pics from our old neighbors of their house closed up with the hurricane panels on their house. They are not as conservative as Harris I guess, they are riding it out. My wife's entire family is in Palm Beach county and Broward County. They are riding it out too. I am just glad I am not there but I suppose they will same the same about CT in February...

Henry, You seem to be a master on the D70... Can suggest a bracket/handle for the D70 and SB-800? I'm not sure exactly what components I will need. Nice touchups in PS on the portraits posted earlier, is that a feather adjustment and/or gaussian blurr?
Thanks!
Anna
Thanks Jarrell for letting us know.

I hope Harris and his family will be safe and I will pray for them.

I recently bought a Stroboframe Camera Flip. I like it but find it a bit clumpsy when working fast. I may want to look at the Pro-T now that I have bought a D2H too.

I rarely use PS to soften. I try to use PS for retouching of blemishes but leave the softening to the use of DOF or soft filters.

Hope this helps.

kind words and concern. We finally hit our destination after 28 hours (for a 10 hour trip). We had 4 cars, 6 cats, 4 birds, 2 ferrets and two turtles. My parents are 80 and it was hard on them.

The vet here is great, the hotel people are great. Not quite the Gaylord Palms of last weekend, where we were supposed to be tonight, but is safe and dry. Going to go to my old house I lived in here while at school, and also Stone Mtn for the light show. Anything to take my mind off it all.

You should see my suitcase, brought all my Nikon warranty papers, my chargers, my ac adapter for mirror lock up. Do you think I brought clothes? Just some t shirts and a couple pairs of pants, ONE pair of sneakers. Guess I was kinda in shock and still am. Hope I have a home and office to go back to. Not sure if I will be able to make the Reznick training session that Frank and I spent over a month putting together.

I guess as long as we are safe that is what matters, now I can ponder on how we will get back if there is no gas or electricity for gas pumps to work. Hope I can get my office up and running, help my patients who need it.

Thank you all for thinking of me. We are safe now, just have to ponder on the future, if there is a home, if I can provide for my family (need an office for that) so that part now is about as tough as anything.

Lets keep our fingers crossed that it is a Category2 or at most 3. I think my home will be ok, and for the office, well, we can redecorate again if we have to. Thats what insurance is for. I'll adjust people on the sidewalk if I have to.

BTW, just bought a cold laser, for healing and inflammation, carpal tunnel and all. Cost $8K, you bet that baby came with me. Even if all my other therapy stuff is gone, that puppy is safe.

Thanks again, will be updating soon.

Regards

Harris

[snip]

Glad you got well away, especially to someplace comfortable. Jensen Beach looks like a place you don't want to be today.

I just got off the phone with my mother. (Age 88.) She's in West Palm Beach. About 3 or 4 miles back from the shore. Power is out, and the weather is raging. The eye is predicted to pass this evening, so she's in for a long day or two. Her building is concrete, and everyone there figures that as long as the storm stays at Category 1 or 2 it should stay together.

There are a couple of shelters nearby, but what she saw of them on TV (while there was still power) was very unappealing. She's brought her food, water, flashlights, radio, etc. into the bathroom, where she'll ride out the worst of it.

I have never seen such a slow hurricane. It is still decent weather here in Miami, only light winds and a very few showers. The most uncertain and long weekend ever. I hope Frances decides that water is better than land and nobody gets it.

Take care of your family and furry/feathered friends first, and your home and office second. We'll definitely miss you if you can't join us (assuming Florida is still there next week), but priorities are clear. I'm glad you all made it out OK. Call me if you get a chance...
