My computer crashed!!! Lovely. I was all excited to get going and take some photos to test out the new cam that cost me pretty much all I have to spend at this point and not I have to buy a new computer. Cry me a river right?

Oh well...I plan on posting some photos in about a year when I can afford a new CPU. Have a good one!!!!

What happened to it?

if it's just the cpu, I'm sure it won't cost that terribly much to replace that part...

What is your computer doing? Does anything come up on the screen at all? I only ask as I am a computer hardware engineer....

Hi Steve, Well it just started to do odd things...First My keyboard would not work, then it would. Then my mouse wouldnt work. I restarted, unlplugged everything and then when it checked the drives FAT32 or something, there were files that were truncated?!?! My yahoo messenger was one of them. there were others though. So now, my mouse works, I cant tell if my keyboard is working or not. I just have a maroon screen and a mouse pointer. I can open the internet and files, but can really see what I'm doing because most of it is still maroon screen.

I know the description is vague and odd but any advice would be great! Its a
Sony VAIO about 4 or 5 years old.

I may be interested. I am however almost flat broke right now, but I think I could figure something out for cash at some point soon. Let me know some details. I dont know alot about computers and hardware (obviously) as far as the RAM and processor and all that. Thanks for the offer. Talk to you soon. -Jared
I have a great laptop that I can sell to you for under $500
(includes shipping). Let me know if you are interested and I'll
provide more details.

If you restart unexpectedly your computer will run a check on the hard disk when it starts back up again. Truncated files are files that weren't correctly written to the disk. They may be new, or they may have been there for years, but they don't show up until the disk gets checked.

Sounds like you may have a display problem. If I were you, I'd invest some time in trying to get it working again, rather than going for a new machine straight away. If possible (I'm assuming it's a laptop?) try connecting it to someone else's monitor and see what you get.

Thanks Thomas,

I appreciate your advice. I went home over lunch and the maroon screen was still there. I had a service pack 2 update from xp to be installed that I had procrastinated on and figured what the h* , I'll try this. It turned out everything came back, but my keyboard is working odd. No caps, no space bar. I will try another keyboard and see what happens.

I was just alittle upset at first, I think it will work out (knock on wood) Thanks again. I'll repost later. -Jared

Hello,

I think it is not really your cpu because if it was your cpu that burns out then you would not use your compture no more. I think you had some problems and your pc or crashed or frozen and you restarted it. Windows XP (and other windows os) can have sometimes crazy things i rebooted my pc owns with hard reset and no way hey would boot again.

Just look if somebody is as nice who lives in your neighberhood who like to reinstall your pc for free. New windows xp on it your photo programs. If you lived near my city but i life in netherlands so i bet you life there. I would helped you right away to reinstall your pc and fix all the programs on it again.

So just look if you can find somebody in your family or on work or just a friend who can install it brand new for you and i bet it will work fine again.

Laptops are just pc's so installing them is not the problem allways remember to look what your sound drivers are sometimes windows don't install them automatically.

Good luck
