A charged batt. shows 147 mins. on the S70, but 165 mins on the S75. So I guess 10% longer batt. life. It seems that a new properly cycled batt. can last 172 mins. which is almost 3 hrs, same as what Sony claims. This is really outstanding, 3 hrs batt life for a digicam!

... does the battery ACTUALLY last that long, or is this just the estimate reported from the camera? Have you really tried keeping it on for that long?

I think it'll last that long. My experience on the S70 says the batt. meter is quite accurate, down to the last minute. I expect the same on the S75. It seems the S75 uses less power than the S70. Remember, it's InfoLithium, the accurate batt. power system.

That's the read out I got with the LCD on in camera mode. Experience with the S70 tells me it can probably last that long. Maybe a tad below 3 hrs.
Does the battery last that long with the LCD on the entire time?

yeah I know, my S70 has already gone over the 160 mark on
numerous occasions. Just outstanding battery!

Accurate for everyone except those of us using the NP-FS11, that is. :(

We need a more robust battery like the NP-FM50.

As expected, the S75 electronics are probably more efficient than those of the S70.

Total agreement, F.C.

Tell me, have you ever noticed the sort of battery wear over time that we users of the NP-FS11 often experience?

What is the performance of the FM50 like over the long haul?

Two FS11 died on me, exhibiting the same symptom, batt. suddenly become low when an operation involves a higher current surge. FM50, almost as new after 9 months of use. The 2 FS11 were 9 months old as well.

I haven't noticed any appreciable loss of quality in my battery although
the 160 min. charges have been far and in between lately ( usually
tops up to 150min and this after almost a full year of constant use ).

Well, between your comments and those of a l b e r t, I'd say that this was fairly incredible performance. Wow. When the NP-FS11 is purchased new and in factory condition, I have no problem recommending it. In that condition, its overall qualities of 80 minutes plus the information displayed are beat only by the FM50. But after several months of usage, it's time that this thing met its maker, and things get frustrating from that time on until you purchase another one.

I asked this question specifically because I haven't seen a complaint yet about the FM50.

I would ditto my experience with the FM50 in an s70. I bought an extra one with the camera and rotate between the 2 makinging sure to drain it each time.

QUESTIONS:

What is "properly cycled"

Memory effect. I am always careful to cokmpletly drain my batteries before recharging. I've heard you don't to do this with InfoLithiums?

Any ideas tips and tricks?

I've also heard that lithium batteries don't need to be discharged before recharging. However, I've noticed that sometimes my batteries get "stuck." If I try to charge an incompletely charged NP-FM50 battery, say with 120 minutes left, it will sometimes only go up a few notches to maybe 124 minutes before the camera flashes FULL. If I remove the battery and try recharging again, the camera will flash FULL again after a moment. But if I leave the camera on until the battery discharges, I will then be able to fully charge the battery (typically to 154 minutes).

So according to my experience, there is a sort of memory effect. The nice thing about InfoLithiums is that I know exactly when my batteries aren't fully charged, so I know when to fully cycle them.

Ha! Exactly like I say, the FS11 wont' last after a few months of use! My batt. are usually charged when almost depleted (but not totally flat), so they should last. Works with most Li-Ion batts. I have, but not on the FS11. Hence I know there is a problem there. Sony refused to admit the problem though.

It is most important that batts. are fully charged and dischaged for the first 5-10 cycles. Don't charge in between or charge when it is not near depletion. It'll make the batt. last a lot longer if you do it properly initially and forward. Also, don't even run a batt. complete flat (like near 0v). This will kill the batt. (because not all cells within a batt. has the exact same capacity, running a pak flat will have an ill effect of reverse charging the first depleted cell(s) by the not yet depleted one(s)).
Memory effect. I am always careful to cokmpletly drain my
batteries before recharging. I've heard you don't to do
this with InfoLithiums?
Li-Ion has minimal memory effect, I won't say zero. You can recharge in between, it only means that you probably won't get memory effect for doing so. Each batt. has X number of cycle time before it dies. Li-Ion has about 500 charge/discharge cycle time. When you recharge say from 1/3 to 3/4 full level, the batt. charge count will be increased by one, effectively reducing the number cycles.

The smartest Li-Ion chargers will refuse to charge a batt. if batt. is only drained a few percent from it full charge to prevent shortening its life.

The lithium battery cell has an average 2.7 volts cut off discharge
voltage. At that point, since the discharge voltage was cut off,
output voltage is 0 votls, but there is 2.7v in the cell.
Lithium battery may lost 20% of its capacity after 200-250 charging
cycles. If the FS11 loses its capacity faster than that rate, then it may
have a problem.

I am using the p1 with an infolithium battery and after 5 months of use, the battery is unable to charge i.e. it says full yet there is no time shown. And when it is turned on, the low battery indicator comes on. This continues on and the camera is able to work normally with flash, lcd display etc for a normal period of time. I think it is a software problem and I think it is damn irritating to have the camera icon flashing and also not knowing how much more battery life you have.

The original battery that comes with my S70 topped at 171-174 mins. the first few charges. That was 3 months ago. Now I get between 147-151 mins. consistently.
