Hi-

I am a longtime OLY user till recently using the Canon D Rebel due to finances. Well, I am getting my E-1 this week, and thought I would ask folks "What's one tip you would give to a new user of the E-1, what would it be?" I had an E-10 and E-20, but just wondering if there's one thing I should know about the E-1 that will get me on the faster track of learning? Also, since I won't have the FL-50 just yet, are there other flashes that work well with the camera and provide TTL? Curious what they might be.
Thanks to all,
Billy

Billy,

Welcome on board.

My starting advice (for what it's worth) would be to download the latest firmware for body and lens; set the sharpness to +3 ; set the mode to "P" for full automatic; then go out and take photos.

Dittos on the upgrades. Take your time and they'll do just fine. Also, if you do RAW, as you probably know, there are several choices. I believe they all have demos, so, shoot a lot and have fun. BTW, the FL-20 makes a nice little TTL flash for less $$$. Oh, and welcome to the club!!

Thanks for the help guys! I am guessing the firmware is somewhere on the OLY site and is self explanatory? No past experience downloading firmware. Thanks!

I may just be an idiot, but I found no firmware for the E-1 on the OLY site... did have the E-10, E-20, E-100RS.... Am I missing something? Probably so.

Install the Viewer / Studio software first, and you will find the "Update software" and "Update firmware" options. Click it and the software will do the rest. BTW, get a USB / Firewire cable and read the instruction beforehand ...

Hope it helps.

It helps to be very organized in this area, and you will have no trouble. To expand on the above.

Install Viewer 1.0 from the CD
"Update software" to get you to Viewer 1.1, which knows about firmware.

Print the instructions out for downloading firmware to the camera, and don't be ashamed to check off each line as you do them.
Attach the camera using USB or Firewire

Click on "Update firmware in Viewer with camera attached and set to "control" not to "storage" (the latter is for downloading images)
Do this once for the camera, and once for each lens.

It doesn't take very long.

Billy,

Your not losing it -- I had the same problem at first. On the Oly site go to the 'Pro' section first, then look under 'Support' and the info on firmware upgrades for the 14-54 and the body are there with instructions. Have fun with your new camera and welcome back!

God Bless,
Greg

My suggestion would be to really explore the world of usable ISO's early on. Coming from the E-10, I think this was the biggest revelation for me. Indoors, low light, on a walk in a forest on a cloudy day, no problem.

Enjoy

If you had E-10 and E-20, you may have an FL-40 flash. This flash has not all the quality of the FL-50, but it works perfectly with the E-1...

An other tip, think about a mobile hard-drive, the JOBO GigaX (20 GB) offers an inexpensive solution to storing your data.
