The News Release of the A85 is somewhat confusing...

"Canon has today announced the PowerShot A85 a replacement to the entry-level PowerShot A70"

-Did Canon forget they produced an A75?

"The A85 remains a four megapixel"

-The A70/75 was 3.2mp.

The designation of A85 implies that it's a higher grade cam than an A80...but 4mp on a 1/2.7 CCD is more of a downgrade from A80's 4mp on a 1/1.8 CCD.

This can't possibly an actual news release from Canon, but some elaborate hoax???

Actually Canon's release was true. Sort of. It was a press release in Canon's Europe division. There was not a release i could find on the site but i did find the specs for the A 85.

It's less a camera than A80, but more than A75/A70. Frankly, there is not much difference between all these models, I don't see why Canon do this.

Canon says on Bebit site:
"PowerShot A85 is the follow-on model of PowerShot A75.

Main enhancements from the PowerShot A75 are as follows;
  • Equipped with an approximately 4.0 megapixel CCD
  • Digital zoom magnification has increased to approximately 3.6 times, and up to approximately up to 11 times when combined with optical zoom
Other specifications are the same as with the PowerShot A75"

So it is not a follow-on model of A80. Very confusing naming. Actually A85 is lower grade camera than an A80.

Could that really be the only better thing ?

Yes, confusing naming and somewhat conflicting information.

I guess then the supposed 'A-85' we've been waiting for is more
than likely to be an A90.

I wonder how much CA and Noise this 4mp 1/2.7" sensor is going to
produce.

I would speculate that:

1. The replacement for the A80 will be announced within a few weeks if not days.

2. The replacement for the A80 will have the larger LCD and be a 5 MP camera plus a few other enhancements.

I think the interesting questions is whether or not it will be priced the same as the current A80. Also I will be curious to see how the noise of the new A85 compares to the A80.

................and how the noise of any 5MP A90(??) compares to the 4MP A80...............

I'm guessing the newer models will not be great!

The A85 is the upgrade of the A70/75 not the A80. The A85 uses the same size sensor as in the A70/75. Therefore I don't think it would be fair to compare the noise between the A80 and A85 (the A80 should win considering the larger size of its sensor).

Just my 2 cents opinion here...

If this is the SD 10 sensor, I hope Canon has significantly improved things...

Eqiupment: Lots. (partial list in profile)

I realize that the A85 has the smaller sensor, but since it is now a 4 mp sensor, I think it will be interesting to see how the noise compares. They had to use the smaller sensor or otherwise they would have had to redesign the camera and use a different lens. Has Canon technology evolved enough to help clean up what I assume would be a noisier/smaller 4mp sensor?

Is canon in the habit of replacing models 5 months after they are introduced(a75)?

introduced(a75)?
Yes.

I think this model should be called the A79. I wonder why Canon must always take away something when they give something. Now that they give the A70/75 4MP, they decide to take away the swivel screen. Now that they decide to give back the VGA movie mode, they reduce the quality from 15 fps to 10 fps.

If the A80 is the baby brother equivalent of the G3, I think its safe to assume that the A90 will be very similar to the G5 in some ways.

My guess is because X ammount of a model are made, and when X ammount of that model are sold, there aren't any left. Thus, they need to supply the demand for the product.
