Please Help! re filters

Hi, I posted in another message that I ordered some Hoya filters and they came scratched etc. But I have a much more basic question on this same topic.

I have not purchased filters in about 10 years, but the 10 or so filters I have purchased always came in a round hard plastic case that I carried in my camera bag. Well, I was shocked to find the expensive Hoya filters I ordered in a case that I would not be able to carry around in my camera bag because it did not fit the filter, nor did it have any protective padding

Is this normal? If so, are there special cases I can get for these filters so I can take them with me when they are not on the camera (after I get one that is not scratched? ) I never encountered such a thing. I'd think for $78 dollars (for the Cir. Pol filter) I would have recieved such a thing with the filter!

If other filters (B&W for instance) come with a case such as I used to get - I'll probably try to replace these with a different kind, so I'd appreciate information as to what type of case your filters come in.

I have to call to return these tomorrow, so any info as soon as you can would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi Mary, I sympathize with you concerning spending that kind of money and recieving goods like that. As I look at your filter case, I am not sure how the surface could get scratched from moving about inside the case. I do see the extra space around the circumferance of the filter ring, but that would not (should not?) allow the filter surface to hit anything. I dug out a Tiffen polarizer in its original case and I have had it for a year and I use it often and no scratches from (my) similiar case. I am in AZ. and dust is a very real problem and still no scratches from the case. I shoot commercially and often I may take this filter in and out of the case several times a day. Sounds totally wrong. Normal cases won't allow scratches. I've got a number of filters and they didn't come with scratches and can't be scratched in their cases. Sounds like you didn't get factory packed filters in factory cases. Do these cases say Hoya on them anywhere?

What does the selling dealer say about it?

I agree with John, if what yor showing is complete, it looks like a repack to me. The case is too big for the filter as seen by the round enclosure. Also, I have never bought a filter that did not come with foam/compressed styro padding to prtect it from movign around. I have gotten filters that had a MFG'ring residue had needed to be cleaned right out of the box but never scratched..

Actually guys,

That is the Hoya package. My polorizer came without any foam inside, but then my UV did. Fortunately for me, my camera bag has a pocket on each end that is just the right size to hold two of those type filter case's.

Still...Mary you should not have to put up with that. My HOYA Polorizer was only $41. I think...he gave me a discount because I was also getting the E10 at the time.

That does look like the current Hoya packaging and even though it does not contain a thin foam insert it should not have caused the filter to become scratched. My guess is that the filter became scratched before you ever opened it somehow. With the "lip" on the metal filter ring a filter should not become scratched by just sliding around inside the case unless there's some serious grains of sand or someting inside the case, too!

Hoya typically makes nice filters and are reasonalbly priced. If you can get your money back on this one, I'd consider shopping elswhwere for a replacement. A 62 mm circular polarizer from either Hoya or Tiffen usually retails for around $40-$50. Your source seems on the high side to put it mildly.

As to other cases, there are filter cases you can buy that will allow you to carry filters in a more secure and accessible manner. However, I have used for many years the method of just screwing the filters I use on a regular basis together and buying a set of threaded filter covers for each exposed end. Very easy to see what filter is what and they all protect each other by being screwed together with the caps protecting the outer surfaces on either end.

Thanks for the input everyone. The price for the Cir. Pol. may seem high - but I purchased the top of the line Super HMC version. I got it from B&H in NY.

I still am kinda shocked about the case. I realize my experience is 10 years old, but what happened to the cases that were round and just larger than the filter? They took up virtually the same space as the filter by itself and could easily be tucked into that last bit of space in your bag. This would be impossible with these Hoya's unless I spent even more money after purchasing the top of their line.

I understand about the makeshift stack of filters someone mentioned, but I'll usually be going out with the Skylight filter on the camera and the polarizer (and RARELY the ND filter) in the bag. I try to carry this thing everywhere with me and my bag is just barely larger than the E-10 itself (holster style bag).

I'm not sure what to do - I can get replacements for the scratched ones yeah, but that still does not solve the how do you store these things in my bag? I guess I'll have to buy some sort of filter case - I hope they are small enough to fit in there (but I resent having to spend extra money when I purchased a top of the line filter).

I guess I've been away from photography too long and am expecting too much. In 1983 I got one of those lens cap saver cord thingys for my Olympus OM-2n (I know it's geeky, but I like those things) It's still on there and that camera took a lot of abuse in it's first decade. But, I'm on my third one for this camera - the darn things don't stay stuck.

I know what your talking about with the changes in the past 10 years or so. Tiffen still makes those little filter case's. Also, you may want to go over to your local Wal Mart, if they are up there, and check out those small canvas cassette carrying case's for your filters. )

Or, get a bigger bag for your E10. )

I was able to get a nice bag from my local camera store for about $50.00 and it carries the E10, TCON14B, FL40, TCON300 and mount (minus carry case), and a few other gadgets and gizmo's with plenty room for more stuff. It's big, and sometimes cumbersome, but I'd rather have all my gear available, than wishing I had brought something and remembering it was back home.

Nice idea - but I'm trying to avoid getting a bigger bag. Because :

1) $$$ and it makes little sense. I don't have the TCON lenses or the FL40. It will be many months before I can afford to think about which ONE I might be able to buy.

2) If I'm out for a long time, I have to carry another bag form my laptop to download my images. I don't want to limit my movement with two big bags.

3) I'm LITTLE - If I tried to carry all the equipment you seem to, Vance, I'd seriously hurt my back in no time.

It's silly, I know getting a round filter case will just cost a few dollars, but I really broke the bank when I got the E-10. I was going to wait on filters, but after I already scratched the one I have, I thought I'd better just dive in and get them all at once. Perhaps I should not have gone for the top of the line type, probably Tiffen should have been good enough for me, but I thought this baby deserved the best!

Obviously, this could all easily be solved with a few thousand dollars - by getting a digital wallet, the accessories, and a good backpack bag for it all. And all the filter cases I want. I sure can dream, but realistically that is not possible nor will be in the forseable future unless that lottery comes in.

If it weren't for VISA, I'd still be shooting with my 850z )
But, the VISA has been retired for now.

I suppose if I ever get out and really get busy taking a lot of pictures at one time, the laptop will have to go with me as well. I've been fortunate so far, in that most of my short shoots have only needed the one 128mb card. I have a spare just incase though. )

You have the best outlook on it. Use what you have, and when you can, get what you have found that you need the most. I think the TCON14b or the 300 would be your next best bet. The FL40 can wait as I think the built in flash works pretty well.

In case anyone is interested - I returned (not exchanged) the whole lot. This seems like too much money (they are expensive to begin with, then I'll have to spring for money for filter cases to protect them) and trouble (2 out of 3 filters purchased are scratched - one unbelievably so) for me to continue with Hoya. So I'm only out double shipping charges.

Unfortunately, I don't know what to do about filters now. I'm still using my scratched el cheapo skylight as protection. I got input here that led me to try the Hoya filters, but now I'm stumped. I can always replace the cheapo skylight, I guess that's what I'll do until I can come up with something.

You'd think in Chicago it would not be so hard - but it seems that the only camera places in the city (beyond the Wolf & Ritzes) don't have anything in stock in 62mm and don't know when they might get anything. I don't have a car, so I can't travel to the suburban shops (there seem to be many) easily and now I don't want to buy a filter until I can inspect it.

Ok - on a more pleasant note - the weather here has turned warmer and sunny - so I hope to have some quality picture taking time today!

I have a number of Hoyas. They do come in the square cases. The case should have had two silver tamper proof pieces of tape on each side of the case, like so CDs have, sealing the lid to the base. If these were not there, or broken, then it was tampered with.
Send them back.

I use a filter folder for mine. Two rows of two pockets that roll with a velcro flap.

still using my scratched el cheapo skylight as protection. I got
input here that led me to try the Hoya filters, but now I'm
stumped. I can always replace the cheapo skylight, I guess that's
what I'll do until I can come up with something.

You'd think in Chicago it would not be so hard - but it seems that
the only camera places in the city (beyond the Wolf & Ritzes) don't
have anything in stock in 62mm and don't know when they might get
anything. I don't have a car, so I can't travel to the suburban
shops (there seem to be many) easily and now I don't want to buy a
filter until I can inspect it.

Ok - on a more pleasant note - the weather here has turned warmer
and sunny - so I hope to have some quality picture taking time
today!

Glad you were able to return the filters. I'd not give up on Hoyas. I suspect the ones you purchased must have been already opened up and tampered with for them to be scratched. It is nice to buy from sources locally for reasons such as this, however, so you can inspect what you are getting at the time you buy it.

I used to live in the Chicago area and I'm sure there are still some nice "pro oriented" photo stores near you. Isn't Calumet Photographic based out of Chicago? It might take some searching, but the stores that cater to pros (not Wolf or Ritz) will generally have a much better selection of just about everything photographic for your needs.

Also keep your eyes and ears open for any camera shows that might be coming to the Chicago area. I'm guessing that you'll probably find that at least one or more will be coming this year (ask around at photo stores). I know that they come around here (Dallas area) several times a year and they are great places to find all sorts of cameras, photo equipment, and accessories. Some used, some brand new. Many of the people that are selling stuff are camera store dealers while others are private owners, but you'll always see lots of stuff. Things like used filter cases and filters themselves are usually in abundance and very cheap. I bought a used 62mm B+W UV filter for my E-10 at a camera show a few weeks ago for $6 case included and it was in perfect condition. Some people may not know what they have, others are just trying to "dump" their old stuff.

It's beem over 20 years since I left Chicago, but Helix and Central Camera were two professional places that I used then. Helix is near north, Central Camera was in the loop on Wabash.

B&H is usually more reliable -- sorry that you got scratched filters from them. (I live in the NY area now and shop at B&H in person.)

In case anyone is interested - I returned (not exchanged) the whole
lot. This seems like too much money (they are expensive to begin
with, then I'll have to spring for money for filter cases to
protect them) and trouble (2 out of 3 filters purchased are
scratched - one unbelievably so) for me to continue with Hoya. So
I'm only out double shipping charges.

Hi, I posted in another message that I ordered some Hoya filters
and they came scratched etc. But I have a much more basic question
on this same topic.

I have not purchased filters in about 10 years, but the 10 or so
filters I have purchased always came in a round hard plastic case
that I carried in my camera bag. Well, I was shocked to find the
expensive Hoya filters I ordered in a case that I would not be able
to carry around in my camera bag because it did not fit the filter,
nor did it have any protective padding

Is this normal? If so, are there special cases I can get for these
filters so I can take them with me when they are not on the camera
(after I get one that is not scratched? ) I never encountered such
a thing. I'd think for $78 dollars (for the Cir. Pol filter) I
would have recieved such a thing with the filter!

If other filters (B&W for instance) come with a case such as I used
to get - I'll probably try to replace these with a different kind,
so I'd appreciate information as to what type of case your filters
come in.

I have to call to return these tomorrow, so any info as soon as you
can would be GREATLY appreciated.

As you can see - I figure the filter got scratched rattling around
in this ill fitting case here with no protection.
