I attempted to create short and rembrandt lighting using flashes shot through diffusion panel, with a silver umbrella as fill. Also, this was my first attempt at my own hand painted background. This young lady naturally "squints" most of the time, I'd love to get her to open her eye's more but it's difficult for her to do so even in a subdued lit room.

As always, appreciate the feedback.

Thanks.

You'll need to raise the light higher and move it more to camera right to achieve Rembrandt lighting. At the present location, you're closer to paramount or "butterfly" lighting. Rembrandt lighting is known by being oblique enough to the facial planes that the shadows defining the cheek and that formed by the nose create a diamond-shaped shadow on the cheek. It's also called "closed loop" lighting, if you look at the shadow under the nose as a "loop" of shadow. When the nose shadow "loop" touches the cheek shadow, you have "closed loop" or Rembrandt lighting.

RDKirk is correct; higher and further camera right. The only light striking the model's right cheek should be a small triangle no wider than the eye. To make it even more effective, shoot it in low-key.

Keep trying.

Thanks.

The problem is I am only working with flash units, so without modeling lights I'm having some difficulty placing the light in the "right" position that I want. I believe I understand to start with loop lighting, and bring the loop out to intersect the shadow to create the triangle, like I said, just difficult with flash units to see where the light lands without a lot of retakes. Soon as I can earn enough to invest in lights ....

Thanks for your time.

I always considered these to have that classic Rembrandt look:
