Kodak 14n Poll

Do the designers of the Kodak 14n have human hands???
Are they aliens? or just high on crack??
Is the n14 the ugliest camera ever built???

On the downside. the 14n body is a bit of a frankencamera with odd
bumps and lumps and clearly the designers didn't have human hands
(who designed the 'portrait grip' - it's useless because there
isn't enough space to get your fingers under the lens and the
button is too hard to press anyway) but it is pretty solidly made -
in a vernacular way.

I quite like the much loathed 'Leno chin' base because it provides
a nice solid place for the left hand to hold on to.

But one thing that I still haven't sorted out when holding the
camera in landscape orientation is what to do with my little
finger. The big hand grip is slightly too big for me to grip in the
way the designers moulded the rubber for so I have to kind of slide
my hand around a bit and then my little finger just won't fit - it
jams into the gap where the portrait grip (er, that's what Kodak
call it...) ends.

Having used the D100 and 14n together this weekend, I think that
the D100 is much more elegantly designed.

the things which are bad are really details as the little knob to switch from af to mf.

the design at all is not so extraordinary bad, seems to me more to be a typical US design. funny why all you americans see the design so ugly. isnt it so that america really is not very famous for its design in the last 20 years? sorry,- but a.e. nearly all the us cars are really horrible at all. i think the kodak fits this kind of design very well.....( i think very different from US design the 30s - the late 70s )

and i cannot see why a fuji S2 a.e. is more beautyfull. or the sigmas ( ....! ) ,

or the d100 ( ... ! ). most cameras are functional tools with little design behind.
there are only few exceptions as the canon 1 or the leica r8.

i dont care
as long as my 14n beats the cr@p out of the the rest at 80iso

Funny, the leica and the Canon 1 series are ugly to my eyes.

The problem with the 14n is that the grip is just a little too big (the D100 is better sized) and a little too short (nowhere for my little finger to go, so it sit ends up squidged into the gap between the portrait grip and the main grip.

Other problems are that there is no space below the lens mount and the portrait grip for the fingers, the portrait grip is an odd shape anyway and the portrait release is hard to press for some reason.

The back of the camera around the LCD sticks out too far which makes it difficult to get your eye to the viewfinder. The tripod socket is also mounted too far forward which means my quick release plates dig into the rubber coating.

Some aspects of the Kodak additions are good though: the rubber coatings, the layout of the back panel swich gear, then way the menus work, the base on the left hand side (good for gripping with left hand), the solid, chunky feel...

I still think its "cute" :) got that chubby fat baby look to it.

But I guess it could be better. The D2h handles like a dream. Why can't Kodak use the D2h body?

It does work okay after getting used to it. The hand strap is a lifesaver, otherwise the body would be a nightmare. But as long as it takes great pics.... That's what it boils down to with me. I build some really fast computers that look ugly as sin, but outperform some computers that look fancy with all them lights and stuff - its all about where you want to place limited resources.

Gregory

HI there

I think it's rather a nice design - bit lumpy I suppose, but for my small hands I've found it good - don't use the wrist strap, but I've developed a way of carrying it in my left hand which works well. Mind you, I never did use portrait releases anyway, so I cannot comment on that.

I really like the way that the rubber covers the base properly so it doesn't scratch (unlike any other camera I've had). I agree that the lcd 'sticks out', but I do like the way it's recessed, so that although it's a wonderful collector of nose-grease, it doesn't scratch easily, and doesn't need a hoodman to protect it.

As for beauty - again, I think it's rather a good design (unlike the slr/c, which looks like an old Russian camera!).

I also like the way that after 8 tough months, mine still looks the same as it did when I bought it.

so there!

kind regards

Maybe if you all stopped being so mean to the Kodak designers and
instead set up a collection fund for them to GET THEIR EYS
EXAMINED! Sorry I could not resist! the Kodak has got to be the
ugliest camera ever built! So ugly only a mother can love.
No, I think a higher priority is to take up a collection to get them prosthetic noses so they can suffer along with the humans. And if they get noses, they will have something to put their eyeglasses on after they get their eyes examined.

I really like the way that the rubber covers the base properly so
it doesn't scratch (unlike any other camera I've had).
Although the tripod socket is in the wrong place - the anti-swivel pin on my quick release plate is supposed to press against the base of the camera but because of the forward position of the socket it presses against the rubber at the front and is gradually drilling a hole.
I also like the way that after 8 tough months, mine still looks the
same as it did when I bought it.
Mine doesn't - after 5 weeks, the paint around the edges of the battery compartment is starting to chip in two or three places for some reason. And the cellophane cover over that little yellow triangle sticker by the PC socket is starting to peel - cheapskate components... ;-)
so there!

kind regards
jono

I think the SLR/C and the Sigmas win with hands down this contest of the ugliest camera, but 14n is not far distant.

One of my friends when he picked up my 14n said:" it looks and feel a bit like a black clothing iron". LOL
Sort of, I would say.

I have fairly long fingers and still the 14n feel a bit too big.Ergonomic in general are not the best. If I want to use the vertical shutter button I need an hammer. But I heard that also the 1D M2 vertical shutter button start working only after you slam the baby against a wall 3 or 4 times.

My nose is not small, but the dysplay does not bother me too much. But I agree that it looks like they put a CRT display instead of an LCD.
The Kodak Professional logo is not very discret.
Defenitevely not a stylish camera.

certainly the 14n is not a perfect camera.

but for the price i paid for it, it does do some amazing things.

last night i looked at at aerial inkjet print i had dry mounted and framed 20x30 inches.

it was taken of a real estate development of about 35 acres at an altitude of about 1000 ft above ground---the closest part in the foreground was maybe 1.5 miles from the camera.

and i can identify cars by make and model, i can see individual horses in a corral and clearly identify them, i can see clearly items on the ground that are about 2 ft across in actual size---i can see a farmer planting corn in an adjacent field with a john deere 4wd tractor pulling a 10 row planter (maybe 3 miles away)---it is much sharper and cleaner looking than anything i've ever shot from this distance with pentax 67 and gyro stabilizer, and this shot was done at 160iso with nikon 35-70 f2.8 at about 50mm f5.6, manual focus, lens taped at actual infinity.

you do not see the sharpness on a monitor screen---you need to print it to see the extreme sharpness---it is amazing.

so i won't whine too much about the 14n.

The 14n's only real problem is setting off menu functions with one's nose. Other than this, it is just another camera.

The idiot who allowed this to happen should be fired - multiple times. Truly no one ever used the camera in this case until it was too late.

This, in my Kodak minded opinion, is the reason Kodak's desingers are second rate.

How can someone miss this if they try the camera. Fire the entire lot of them and garnish their wages. This type brought us the Pontiac Aztec - fools and second rate hacks. Guys/gasl who do this are not camera people, but second rate MBAs from third rate schools. The CEO should be fired for this cluster XXXXXXX - it is that simple of a problem and that simple of a solution. Boo on what would be a great camera, I can deal with the rest b/c its complicated, this is simple my 4 year old can figure it out.

Other than that, the rest is really not that big a deal. All cameras have their quirks, this one has a massive stupidity.

Did you read that Jay? I'm on fire tonight.

certainly the 14n is not a perfect camera.

but for the price i paid for it, it does do some amazing things.

Speaking of imperfect designs, the cabinets and counters in my house are too high for me to use comfortably. And who forgot to put a molded, padded handgrip on hammers and screwdrivers? And why are Dell computers deadly-dull 18% gray? They don't match anything in the house, and they're hard to get a hold on to move.

For the most part, I decided that it's a lot easier to make peace with the imperfect design of everyday things, including every imperfect camera I've owned; the expensive digital slr that had a back panel piece that began peeling away in the first three months of use, the follow-on camera with a hotshoe that required heavy-duty tools to remove the flash unit, the expensive, brand-name filter that fell into pieces on the street during a shoot...

Having made peace with this stuff, I agree with Ed.

This is easily rectified in the menu and I now have no problem activating the menu accidently with my BIG nose.

i said that i think different from the 20s til the 70s....
isnt it so that america really is not very famous for its
design in the last 20 years? sorry,- but a.e. nearly all the us
cars are really horrible at all. i think the kodak fits this kind
of design very well.....( i think very different from US design the
30s - the late 70s )
Pun intended.

What in europe could compare to this classic American design?

Its been holding its own for decades.
Often imitated, but never duplicated...

sorry mastrianni that i need to correct you. in general it is very nice your treat..... especially the ugly examples. but the good ones could be much more better....

there are versions of the porsche 911 way more better: it is the version without the wing. the version with the wing is a alian also. you will not find it in any design museum or in any classic competition therefore.

the nikon is everything else than a good designed camera. put a leica r8 o a leic m4-p. or our enemy no1 a canon 1ds. ( or a V1 not to loose friends...)
