I need a twain complaint, USB, megapixel camera that can give me good quality pictures INDOORS. I take pictures of women's shoes from a distance of 12 inches.

I have tried the Toshiba PDR-M4 and the quality of the color and richness of the pictures is terrible.

Any suggestions???--Steve Goldberg

Have you tried illuminating the shoes with a couple of floodflights or flash units?
Why 12 inches, in any case?

Any unit with programmable white balance ought to do the trick IF there is enough light around.

Steve,

Does it absolutely have to have USB? If so, you are limiting yourself greatly. You can purchase a USB card reader for $79.00 which will read CF, TypeII, or SmartMedia directly, and read MemoryStick with a TypeII adapter. If this would work, you can choose from literally dozens of capable cameras. I would suggest looking at the Sony D770, which takes great indoor shots and has excellent manual features which will let you do nearly anything you want. Other possiblities are the Olympus C2020Z, the C2500L, the Nikon CP950, etc. You may want to also use some digital darkroom software to manipulate the images. A simple mouse click on inexpensive software such as Adobe PhotoDeluxe will do an "instant fix" and give you color saturation and contrast/brightness leveling to make otherwise drab looking shots vibrant.

Steve, I just posted a Epson PC 850Z response here:

I've used the macro feature taking pix from 8" to 20" way + 3x zoom.
For examples go to:

Good luck...Harvey

I'll second that. Good lighting may actually be more important than the choice of camera.

I'm still confused. If your laptop is new enough to have USB, doesn't it also have a PCMCIA port? if so, you can directly read TypeII cards or CF, SmartMedia and MemoryStick with a little Type II adapter. It seems you are really limiting yourself to try to find a camera with USB output. Actually, Lexar makes a CF card with USB attachment, but unless your PCMCIA ports are both being used by other devices, why bother??
