Sad Sad Day for me :(

If you have been following my few posts, you would know that I received a Nikon D70 kit for my BDay from my wife on 4/17/04. After taking many shots, I noticed that the camera was back focusing. Even with my own lenses and not the kit lens, the camera was backfocusing. Yesterday, (4/19/04), I returned it for another D70 hoping to not have the back focusing issue. Unfortunately, the back focusing issue is still there. I love the D70 and its funtionality and its apparent build quality. Unfortunately, I cannot do with the back focus issue. I have just ordered a new Canon 10D and hopefully it will not have the back focus issue (Yes I know some 10D's do have a back focusing issue also.) I post this becasue not to cause a post war or anything, I just want to bid my fellow Nikon users farewell as I drift over to the Canon forum for now. I will probably be back and forth between two forums as I have been a long Nikon fan and have built up a small colleciton of Nikon lenses that I still use with my N80, (which is why I purchased the D70). Good luck to all who has the focusing issue and when Nikon fixes it, I might find myself an owner of a D70 or D100 relacement again

that it was back-focussing? (maybe you have posted examples). You can't just take a picture of a angled ruler, you need a suitable target, with a ruler nearby in order to do a test. Some real world shots can fool AF too.

Back focus sure seems like someone using the wrong focus area setting. At least thats the first thing I think of when I read these threads.

yeah, I was out at the park during lunch today and took alot of pictures of the flowers that were out there.. 99% of the pics were back focused.. I will post pictures of it tonight when I get home from work... I wish it wasn't so.. but unfortunately it seems so..

2 in a row for me. Verified by the photographer at Ritz using a line chart. Both backfocused badly. Until Nikon has a fix, or incorperates a fix into production, I'm on "wait and see".

I know how you feel. I'm very upset with the backfocus problem. In my cases, I took several hundred pictures from the Boston Marathon yesterday and many of them are backfocused. I could not believe my eyes at first and after did the focus test, it confirm my fear that my D70 have backfocus problem. The thing that make me really upset is that the previous D70 that I had have no focus problem (I took around 2.5k pictures with it) but instead have AF Assist problem and dusts inside the OVF. It seem like the buying a D70 right now is like gamble to get one with good focus and everything working fine.

I don't know - they look good to me, but maybe they do...appreciate your opnion? I did a test using the calendar on our fridge at an angle and it appeared that the focus was correct.

Backfocus is what happen when you focus on a target but instead of the target being sharp, something in the back of the target is sharper. This is mainly a problem when the Depth of Field (DOF) is small and hence only small focus error is allowed. In some severe cases, your target will be on the edge of the zone of acceptable sharp and things on the back will look sharper than your target.

Maybe I am confused - I thought backfocus is when the focus point was in front of the subject...I think I had it backwards.

Back focus is when the focus point is behind (further from the camera) than the subject? So front focused would be closer to me than the subject?

So do my pictures look bad???

Can you tell us how we should be testing our cameras for backfocus? Here is what I did: First it did the yard sitck thing, put yard stick on table and shot pic at approx 45 degree angle. I put a key as a marker at 18 inch mark. The 18 inch mark was out of focus, but at about 21 inches the marks were in focus.

So then I set three soda cans with bar code labels facing camera, one in front, one in middle and one to the rear. I took a picture streight on with center can as target. The center can's label was in focus and other two were out of focus (as it should be). I then took a shot at 45 degrees with the center can as target, from above; the front and center can labels were out of focus and the rear can label was in focus.

Were these valid tests? If not how should I do test?

I will do a comparison as I just ordered my 10D from ecost and paid overnight shipping so it should arrive sometime tomorrow. I can hold on to the D70 until after I do the test to compare the two. However, it will not be a very fair comparison as I have a small collection of very nic Nikon lenses for the D70 while I only have a 28-90 f4.0-4.5 canon lense that came with my Elan 7e... The canon lens I have is inferior to any of my Nikon lenses.. I will not have a canon lens with a large enough aperture to do a complete thorough comparison. What I can do is barrow my friend's Tokina 28-70 f2.8 lens as I have the exact same lens for nikon so that would be a good comparison.. I will see if I can get it from him soon to do the test..

Wouldn't it be better to send the camera in to be fixed or tuned or whatever instead of getting a replacement camera? I ask this out of sheer ignorance, assuming the camera can be sent in and tuned or whatever the term is.

You would be out of a camera for two weeks, which is unacceptable as I am going on vacation tocalifornia next week.. and when you exchange there is a chance that you can get a good camera without having to send it in.. also cost of sending it in..

Ok, I am not talking about the inconvenience factor, or your situation specifically. I have backup cameras, so being without for a week or two won't harm me. It just seems like the aggrevation of swaping cameras hoping for one that is right would be a bigger wast of time for me.

If there is a way to get it sent in, has anyone done this? And what is the procedure? Does it work? Is it lens specific? Or will one fix cover it all?

Totally kidding.

Backfocus is some kind of descriptive term, usualy in dSLR it is the effect of having sharpness on the background instead of the subject.

So do my pictures look bad???

Your pictures look good. Shoot some NEFs at full aperture and make full-sized images available on-line, if you have any doubts. But do not try to fix what is not broken.
