I notice that both Ritz Camera and B&H Photo are listing this digicam as being in stock. I'm anxious to hear what people think of that camera. Does anyone have one yet and would you mind posting an image or two?

Interested in the same thing.... I just pre-ordered one from Datavisioncomputer.com for a really good price and they said that they are expecting to get them in this week.

Would love to see some pictures taken with the S4i

I visited that site and their price is really low. If you don't mind my asking, what did they charge for shipping and handling and do they charge sales tax for sales outside NY? Also, did you buy any extras or were you pressured to do that? Sorry, I'm just skeptical of the NYC retailers. I've dealt with B&H and, so far, I've been quite happy with their service, but they aren't the lowest price web store.

Please do a post when you get the camera. I'm sure others will be anxious to hear about your experience from buying to using.

Shipping was a little under 10 dollars so not bad of a total price for this cam.
No sales tax outside of NYC too.

I hate nyc retailers period, but the price was too good to pass up and I'm hoping for a smooth transaction with no hastles. So far so good. I'll post pics once I get my cam... I can't wait!!

I know what you mean about NY retailers, but that issue primarily comes from the shops in 42nd street area or the Coney Island (Brooklyn) based shops. Those guys prey on tourists and they wouldn't even recognize the word ethics. A lot of them are actually operated by Russian and Israeli emigrees who are maybe coming from a different, rougher world where they are more concerned with outfighting their competition and the next dollar than cutomer care and retention. So price is low, and so are ethics and service. They also put up websites like roaches, simply changing name once they are discredited. I wouldn't be surprised if there are as few as 5-10 companies who are actually running the tens of website urls that create this bad reputation!

DataVision, on the other hand, is an excellent company. They have a great store on 5th Ave and 40th St in Manahattan. If you're ever nearby, go take a look: its no fly-by-night. In that mid-size store, they've got a better tech product selection slection than your typical Compusa orC CircuitCity, more knowledgable sales folks, they deal with you honesty - and for sure they have much better prices. I really love that place - its one of the hidden gems of NYC - I end up in there sometimes even when I have nothing specific in mind!

In the camera field specifically, some other good and very reputable New York based stores with web/phone sales are:

Whew, what a relief - I just put down $309 plus $19 for 2-year warranty on an S4i from DataVision. I can't wait...

Thanks, skagen.

The Ritz camera near me just got it in today for $350. I was seriously tempted to get it but I can't stomach the $170 for a 3 year warranty. Granted the warranty covers damage such as dropping it but it's almost half the price of the camera.

I do have a couple of questions...

Does anyone know of any stores or webstores that offer a warranty with damage coverage?
And what is the best case for the camera that protects the lcd?
Thanks.

I'll probably buy one at the Ritz store in Salem, NH soon. I agree that their extended warranties are a bit high, but the store manager tells me that, as long as you bring in the pieces, they will give you a new camera. That includes driving over it with your car. This will be my 4th digital camera and I have never bought an extended warranty, nor have I had a problem which I'd have collected on. So I figure that I'm ahead of the game. As an aside, I never buy extended warranties on anything, but made an exception when Best buy sold me a 4 year warranty on a $180 vaccuum cleane rfor $19. The cleaner died in under 2 years and Best Buy just gave me a new one and the warranty still has 2 years left on it. I thought that it was interesting that this was the only warranty I'd ever bought and I ended up collecting on it. Maybe I should play the lottery occassionally.

As to the case, Pentax makes a leather one for $19. There is another company that makes one for around $10 made of heavy nylon, I believe. I'm not sure how good either one is. A lot of people have actually used the Altoids tin and glued felt or foam inside to protect the camera. I believe that there was a thread on this site with photos to show how it was done. I don't have the link, but search for Optio S or S4 and you should find it.

Good luck with the camera when you get it.

I too ordered from Dataviz. Have you received a tracking number for the order yet? I tried calling them and they wouldn't even tell me if my order was shipped, they said to wait and see if I get an email with a tracking number. I preordered it so I'm hoping that mine would be one of the firsts to go ......

I'm getting nervous with these online dealers..

I preordered the s4i from them on Thursday evening. I received an email with tracking number on Friday. According to the UPS tracking site, the camera is on its way and should be here next Friday. So far so good, and I hope you get yours soon! I know the wait can be agonizing...

By way of introduction, I usually hang out more on the Sony forum. The s4i is to complement my Sony F717 for the times when I don't feel like lugging around my camera backpack. I'll try to post again with my thoughts after I get to play around with the camera.

I just got my S4i this morning! The large lcd is beautiful as well as the design of the camera.

The battery is charging right now. The cradle is cool because it has a slot to charge a spare battery when your camera isnt in the slot!

I will take some pics today and post them up asap.

Peace.

I'd like to ask a small favor. There has been no positive confirmation as to whether the s4i actually has ISO 400 available. Could you please check for an ISO 400 setting and report back here.

Thanks,

ISO 400 is on the camera.... :]

When would you typically need this though?
Thanks,

Thanks for the info.

I'm fond of shooting available light photos (no flash), and sometimes you need the extra sensitivity in poorly lighted interior conditions: a moderately lighted living room, a night club, a candle lit dinner, etc.

Thanks again,

I'd be glad to take some shots in ISO 400.

Is there any preference on what kind of shot you would like to see?

I'm an amateur so if you could, give me some directions and I'll do my best to show you some sample pics. This forum has helped me in a lot of ways and I guess its the least I could do to give back :]
I'd like to see example ISO 400 shots. As would others I am sure,
here and at the group below.
