I went out today to take some pics with my D70 -- come rain or shine. It didn't rain but it was very overcast. I tried setting a custom WB before I left the house but I must not have done it right because the results were not good so I used Auto -3 on these. I think I should have used exposure compensation or a custom curve, but oh well, I'm learning.

I've never experienced so much trouble post processing images as I did today. Is there a trick to fixing underexposed images in PS7? I'm still learning the camera so I'm not quite ready to tackle Nikon Capture and work with NEF files.

Also what AF-Area mode is best suited for shooting landscapes? Several of the pics I took today didn't seem to be in sharp focus anywhere and I want to rule out the possibility of camera malfunction. It was not due to camera shake -- shutter speeds were adequate despite the cloud cover.

I don't want to pretend as though I have all your answers, but I pulled a copy of your photo from PBase (not very large in size, btw) and dunked it in a Photoshop bath. With some tweaks to Levels and Unsharp Mask (just a tad, because I see you already applied some kind of sharpening to it previously), I was able to alter the photo so it appeared much more acceptable to my eyes.

My suggestion is perhaps a change in workflow.

Hopefully someone else will have greater insight, but those are my initial thoughts.

Cassandra on my monitor your images look pretty good for being such an overcast day. Of course not sure about that Harley look a like. hehehe

You might consider shooting jpgs for awhile till you feel like you have master most of features of the D70. Getting white balance down and making sure you are comfortable with the operation of any camera is key.

Then after you feel your images are close then you might want to start learning more about the in's and out's of nefs and how to slay the two headed histogram monster. :o)

Did you use adobeRGB colorspace?

btw, the photos that you posted don't look bad.

No, sRBG. The colors are dull because it was so overcast I think. They don't have much "snap" though.

Custom WB is useful in mix-light environment. Auto WB works pretty reliablely in this situation. Just watch the histogram to ensure proper exposure and my limited experience with D70 for a few hours show it doesn't like to be under-exposed.

There is a landscape mode in case you do need it.

I'm pretty well versed in Photoshop but for some reason I could not get these the way I liked. I've never had this problem with shots from my Fuji 6900z. Then again I didn't usually try shooting on heavy overcast days either!

Good to know! :) Yeah I was aware of the landscape mode but I guess I like doing things the hard way. ;)

Hi Cassandra

Your hyacinth pic is very beautiful and very sharp.

I've thought that I've seen softness in landscape shots taken with the kit lens, but just thought I was being picky.

Whilst I'm trying to convince myself to fork out the money & buy the D70, in preference to the 300D, I still think that the latter's shots are sharper - lens or in camera processing, I'm afraid I don't know. Part of me says wait for Rebel Mk II.

On your pbase DSC_0045 is tack sharp on my screen.

Did you stay up all night and maybe tired?

Your photos don't look bad to me

After the shot's been taken. Also WB has little if anything to do with how dark a pic looks. That is an exposure issue. You should start right now, and install N View 6.2. and NC 4 trial, with the update to 4.1. The interface is really pretty easy to get the hang of. I shot jpgs only for 3 yrs til I was enlightened. Now never another jpg, only NEFs!
