Traded in G3 for Rebel....frustrated with color/quality

They wanted "more camera!" At any rate, they are very happy with it and got better pictures right off the bat! ;-)
We went to the River with my brother and sister in law and he had
just bought the Rebel - an upgrade from the G3! They are taking a
trip to Italy in 2 weeks and although they loved the G3 they've had
for a few years now they wanted more pixels!
"More pixels" is the least important thing about the 300D.

Theses were taken with the Sigma 28-300 lens. The first one I like, the rest make me want to vomit. I didn't photoshop any of them and I can give the specs for each if you would like.

I will go out today and try out the 18-55 lens that came with the camera.

Thanks all for sharing your knowledge. Now I need to find a use for the Sigma lens.... :[

You can do this in Setup/Parameters menu. Bump all params to the max. This will approximate high internal image processing of most P&S cams. You'll loose detail, dynamic range, realism and latitude in post-processing but will gain a more familiar out of camera image look.

Also watch for focus. Did you use on G3 AiAF or Central focus? By default 300D is set in AI focus. That may be confusing at first and it also can switch by itself in AI Servo (auto tracking) mode. You said you were trying to capture horses? Then if they move AI Servo could've kicked in. Try switching into Centra focus. Read the manual.
Is it going to get better?
While I used the G3 as mostly a point and shoot I was not always
fully manual.
I just bought the Rebel EOS and have been messing around with it.
While I've gotten lucky with a few quality shots, most of them are
utter garbage. My bright green grass looks pale grey/green. The
colors stink and my images aren't clear....
Does the Rebel not do as well on manual? I tried different filters
but have only ventured into auto modes.
I am shooting horses, still and moving, close and far away. The
"landscape" mode looked terrible.
The lens I bought with the camera is a Sigma with a wide range:
28-300mm.
Do I just need to learn more and venture into the manual
settings?Help....I am currently very disappointed.

Thanks....

The G3 does not have AiAf....it has centre focus, and can be set to either single or continuous.....single is the way to go. Ai focus in the 300D is a whole different animal than AiAf or any feature in the consumer level Canon cams.....it's a feature used to track moving subjects and to aid in focusing.

Babs,

My main issue now is remembering that I have responsibilities other
than tweaking images in Photoshop.
I will DEF drink to that "problem"! It is bad enough that it is so addicting to be taking the pictures... Now the digital darkroom off yet another whole world of possibilities. And can be even more addicting!

FWIW - there have been a number of posts here were folks sold their 300d's to go to something like the Pro 1 just for the simplification of things. If the additional maniuplation is more than you bargained for this may be a route to consider. I'm on the fence myself between holding out a 10d and modest lens kit or taking the more sensible route of the Pro1... but then I do LOVE tinkering in PS!

Babs, the colour looked fine to me and they were pretty sharp. But as the previous poster suggested you can boost saturation in camera or with an editing prog. As a rule Dslr's have their default settings low to allow for greater editing ability.
Stick with it youll win in the end.

my site for photos taken in the past four days, the chico gallery: http://www.pbase.com/wwp the first day a g5 on its own, the next day the g5 plus a wide angle extension, the third the g5 with a 2x teleconverter at the local swimming hole, and today with my new rebel and the kit downtown again. i think i used parameter 1 most of the time with a few 2's (somebody said the 2 awful!) i want to try the setting suggestions too. best of luck. i hate the weight of the dslr but i think i'm going to love the pics. (ordered the 1.8 50mm to shoot dancers in lowlight. that's been my cross. most people prefer the 1.8 85 but it's four times as costly). on pbase search according to camera and scroll down the left side to the lenses. you can look at examples of them all and decide what you need and like.
