Wish the next generation of Sony DC would be able to write MPEG directly to Memory stick instead of the current 15 secs limit. With this new technology, I will be able to record 20 min of mpeg HQ footage on 1 gigabyte memory stick.

Am I dreaming ? Hope Sony is listening.

This is something that I do not anticipate changing anytime real soon. I think you are much more likely to see digividcams evolve that will record MPEG movies. But one of the main reasons we have this 15 second limit is that the movie size gets so large in filesize beyond this time limit. Why, even a 15-sec HQ movie is 5MB in size! When you cross over the limit of only 1MB, it ceases to be fun to e-mail it to family and friends.

The 15-second movie seems to be the common size for several of the Sony cameras. So I doubt that we'll see this change anytime real soon, although a real digividcam might be more like what you have in mind if you really want long and HQ videos.

On the 505V if you hold down the shutter you can record up to 60 seconds of MPEG movie. Hope that helps.

Everytime I go to the local discount store they have the Sony 770 sitting there for $700. That is one well built beautiful work of art. If they cut the price in half again, I would buy it just to look at :-)

Only reason I dont bite on it is I've seen the sample pictures((((( Now wouldnt it be great if Sony upgraded that with better lens and 5 mepapixel.....

I'm not sure why Sony hasnt upgraded it? Maybe they never plan on it?

Yep, I knew about that. I was hoping that Johnson also read about it in the manual (you can only do this in the 160x112 resolution mode). But the default settings will only allow for 5, 10, or 15 second recordings. Those were the ones I was referring to. I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

What Johnson seemed to be requesting was that writing directly to the Memory Stick would bypass the way that the camera currently seems to deal with recording movies. It seems that you've got to have a buffer big enough to temporarily store the movie before writing it to Memory Stick. That on-camera buffer apparently is only about 5MB. To get more would probably increase the price of the camera significantly. It seems that they've gone with this size of on-camera memory chips pretty much across several models, so I doubt that this will change anytime soon.

Then again... if we'll pay for it, you never know.... :)

Now that WOULD be a nice camera, wouldn't it? Many folks right here in this forum have said taht the 770 is one of the best digicams for control and handling that they've ever used.

To get an update to this one after the fashion of Canon's own update to the PowerShot Pro70 (now the PowerShot Pro90 IS), is evidence that these companies do occasionally want to give the consumers something in the range just below the true professional cameras. Maybe Sony will, too!

It seems to me that with the technology cross licensing agreements with Lexar which would provide an 8X increase(I think, I'll have to track down the source) in write speed to the Memory Stick, and the advent of the 5 Mp chip(probably have to reengineer everything anyway), that there is no technical reason to constrain the Mpeg to any 15 second clip.

Arguably, you could stream Mpeg onto the 4X CDR (600Kbs) in the CD-1000 if some things were reengineered. Sanyo has announced the IDC-1000 which streams SVGA quality digital video onto a Magneto optical disk at 28 Mbs.

The real issue is not whether it is technically possible, but why would a company like Sony want to market it against a Sony Digital Video camera?

Well, in fact, I see the technologies as complementary, especially, if your medium ends up being broadband (cable, internet) vs filmmaking.

Either way, Sony or no, there will be converged devices like the Sanyo available this year, and I would like to have one.

Are wishing for a better digital video camera or a digital still camera?

Anyway, Hitachi has a digital video camera out that records on a mini-DVD RAM disk (the same size as the mini disc used in CD-1000) that could record 90 minutes or so of hi-res video.
