A friend of mine from the newspaper I work for here in Ankara has posted a photo essay of some of my Okinawa images in his online magazine. My link,"Okinawa," is on the left.

He just got back from Afghanistan and has also posted a photo essay (taken with G2) from that trip -- some spectacular images. Definitely worth a visit (and the site is very interesting as well :-)).

How is Turkey these days? I would love to travel there... So much to photograph! ;) My friend just returned to Turkey to complete his mandatory military training and I have yet to get his full experience.

Thanks for sharing Helen! Nice pictures from Afghanistan! Glad to hear that your friend is safe.

Take care,

Those wre great shots. I can see why your friend wanted to feature them.

Hi Lee,
I am surprised that more people haven't commented...
Oh well, that always seems to happen to my posts here :-)
Anyway, congratulations! You have some very great pictures there!
Thank you! I was quite flattered that he wanted to feature them on his site.

Turkey is wonderful, both to live in and to visit. I would highly recommend it! We lived here for four years, then went to Okinawa for three and are again back for another three in Ankara. It feels like home. Right now there really isn't much IMO to photograph in Ankara (pretty bleak at the moment) but Istanbul and the rest of the country are fascinating places, literally full of great things to take pictures of.

Yes, I was a bit concerned about him. He is Canadian and was traveling with the Canadian troops stationed there under NATO. A Canadian soldier was killed by a suicide bomber while he was there. I was happy when he got safely back to Turkey and was delighted to see his pics.

Sorry, when I was thinking of Turkey I was thinking of Istanbul in particular due to the architecture and the history that is there. :) Some of the beaches in the south are nice I hear. Ankara is about a 4-6 hour bus ride to Istanbul isn't it? If so, maybe you should go for tour to show off Istanbul to the rest of STF! ;)

I know what incident that you are talking about... I am from Canada and heard about this... This happened a few days before the soldier was scheduled to come home. I know that it hit the morale of the Canadian soldiers quite hard. Truly unfortunate... Glad to see your friend is safe... I am sure that it was quite an experience for him!

Take care,

Lee

Well, mainly from me :-). But I'd be happy if people would look, also at his Afghan pics. I think they're great.

Thank you! It was so easy to find wonderful things to photo in Okinwa. Ankara is much harder, unfortunately. I've got a couple of Ankara galleries up on PBase, but don't think they compare to my Oki pics.

Well... getting time and the means to get there is the problem. I have friends in Istanbul whom I have even seen in the five months we've been back. But first we had no car, then Istanbul was bombed by terrorists, then there's been LOTS snow since then between here and there, and finding something to do with my dog... it's endless! But I'm hoping to make it up there soon because it's truly an inspiring city for photography.

Yes, that's the one. Such a terrible thing to have happened. If you're Canadian, you might have even seen one of his stories from there. He freelances for Canadian papers in addition to working with me at the paper in Ankara.

Helen,

That's good news and great pictures.

Interesting background bio at the end: "... and an aspiring anti-Bush dissident." I sympathize.

It definately looks inspiring from some of the pictures that I have seen. I see that getting there is definately a challenge! Well, if somehow you do make it up there, make sure you let us know! ;)

Also, what paper do you work for Ankara (if you don't mind me asking)? Do you work at the paper as a freelance photojournalist? Just curious as my friend grew up in Ankara. :)

Thanks again,

Lee

Oh, you'll probably be bombarded by pics :-). I'm definitely in need of some photographic inspiration!

I'm the copy editing chief at the Turkish Daily News, a very challenging job, to put it mildly. It's a Turkish newspaper -- everyone there is Turkish except the copy editing staff -- but we're the only paper in Turkey to publish in English. I only wish I could be a photojournalist! Maybe some day, if I ever get good enough :-). When I worked there on our last tour in Ankara, I used to write full-page specials for them about once a month under my own byline in addition to running the copy editing department, but this time around I've only done one piece on a lecture in Ankara by Thomas Friedman of the NY Times. Just haven't been inspired enough to start writing again yet. And too exhausted at the end of my six-day week.

Where in Turkey is your friend from? Is he still doing his military service?

Yes, well, I had to laugh when I saw what he had written. We work together and have some great discussions along those lines. Don't think it would still be categorized as "aspiring," though :-).

I really liked the part about buying a new camera. Sure would be nice to try out an 828!
