Once riding season starts up, I am going to be taking my Drebel with me into the mountains quite a bit for photography. The slight complication here is that I will be riding my motorcycle. I am looking for a backpack that I can wear while riding that is secure and comfortable. I also need it to withstand a crash of 90+ mph. Well...just kidding about that last part but hopefully it will offer some pretty decent protection for my camera and lenses. The biggest thing is that it needs to be comfortable and light. I move around a lot on the bike when I am going through the curves and I don't want a lot of weight on my back. Thanks everyone!!

After looking at several options I went with the Canon backpack. There are other backpack options but most are alot more expensive.

I have been pleased with it but I would not want to fall off my motorcycle with it. I took it for a ride last week to take photos at a motorcycle race and it was very secure with just the shoulder straps and the sternum strap.

Please make sure that it is always totally zipped before lifting.

another idea might be to buy a small camera case (depending on how much "stuff" you will be bringing. Them pack that in the backpack surrounded but bath towels. I used to do that with my laptop going to work and it kept everything padded and stopped it from moving around. plus the added padding helped against my back too.

I took a look at it...looks pretty good for my application. Where did you buy yours?

i like the idea of a regular bag but not too much on the towels. i would suggest getting a regular small bag for your dreb and put it on your main backpack for your other stuff. it also lessens the chances of attractive theives when your bag says "canon" or some other brands thats really specific with gadgets. Targus for one only means that a $$$ laptop is inside it.

I'm happy with my mini trekker AW - it even has a built-in rain cover.

Never been on a motorcycle with it tho!

my tankbag is magnetic. do you think that will cause any problems to the camera? can i use a microdrive or will it have data loss (compared to a CF card)

I have a Joe Rocket sport tankbag, I love it. Magnetic, doesn't move no matter how much you load it up, or even lay on it on the highway. With the camera just put some foam or padding on the bottom and it's great!

I have a magnetic tankbag right now. I was wondering if the magnets hurt the camera at all? Also, if I use a microdrive...is it sensitive to magnetic fields?

after rereading this, I was not sure if this was something you were going to need to get at the camera often or just tkaing it from point a to point b. if it's the first, then yeah...the towels won't work very well.

wow. looks like I'm a yamaha owner in the center of CBRs. haha.

I like the tank bag idea, although i've never liked them for my bike. But one thing, just watch the vibrations. I don't know how padded your bag is, but a friend had one on his Gixxer and he tried using a portable sony CD player in it. even with a 20 second ESP the player still skipped very bad from the vibrations. But of course that was on a Suzuki too. ;)

The microdrive I believe would be affected, but as far as I know, the camera itself won't be bothered, I carried my S30 in the bag all the time without ever any problems, so I wouldn't have a problem keeping the rebel in there, minus a microdrive.

Everyone knows that friends don't let friends Suzukis. :)

backpacks can be very bad for your
spine in the event of a bike crash.
i've been fortunate never to test this
theory, but it does make sense. if
you do go body-surfing on the street
with a backpack holding a large-ish,
solid object right over your spine, the
ammount of force transferred to those
one or two vertebrae could be enough
to hurt or break things. as said above,
i always tie off to the seat, or use a tank-
bag. check out the expandable bags from
RKA. they have magnets or straps with
quick-connects. excellent designs, and
made as well as the best expedition
backback.

I might nix the idea of wearing a backpack while riding...especially doing any aggressive riding. I do wear a back protector...but landing on my back and having the camera compress into my spine might not be fun. As long as the magnets don't mess up my camera (from my magnetic tankbag), that sounds like a good solution.
