Feivel,

I have not personally used metallic paper for any of my own pictures, but I have an account with White House Custom Color (www.whcc.com) and they have just started offering it. In the samples they have sent me, it looks pretty darn nice.

The time to use it is with a black and white image. Don't print color images with it. With a black and white, the metallic paper will "shine" through the lighter parts of the image, sorta giving the image a metalic hue. Sorta like nicely silverish tinted images done with a gradient layer or a fancy duotone. :D

I'm very interested in using this paper for some of my B&W's, too. Curious to hear what you think if you decide to give it a try.

Best,

Gabriel

It's a Koduck thang. Looks okay for certain type images, especially street rods and Harley hogs. Gives people the fakey baseball card look on average but does have some intrinsic value for the sports league shooter. Portraits need a non-clashing color scheme that lends itself to the reflective value of the paper.

Even though the specs show it as a glossy paper, prints have more of a matte look to them, kinda like some of them old PokeMon cards.

printed portraits and it gave a feel of being expensive. From a layman'a point of view, this is how I describe the look. It might have three or four layers each,

of the course the bottom one is ordinary paper just like any other photopaper backs.

on top of it is a silver layer.

again on top of the silver layer is the glossy color layer. This color layer tends to make the whites transparent, thereby exposing the silver layer. That I guess makes its character. The whites or the highlights tends to be silverish.

hope i described it well.

Its definitely worth the try. In my case, It suited my taste very well.

Greetings Feivel,
Ive done several prints on metallic paper - though not from mpix.
I would suggest you print only one and form your own opinions.

I personally found it to be 'great' when the first print arrived but realized its more of a novelty (imho). I believe it adds an unnatural 'pop' and 'shine' to images which I dont prefer anymore.

Feivel,

I've used mpix' metallic paper. I love it for product or any non-person shot. Doesn't do a good job for portraits, but it's fabulous for prodict shots.

The person who said it's only good for B&W is crazy... it's great on color, too.

When you get your test print back from mpix, let us know what you think!

Zippy,

How's it work with color? Does the sheen come through in areas where there are light colors, or just where it is white?

I thought maybe shades of grey would allow paper to show through more than, say, a bright red.

Well, I've never seen a color print on metallic paper, so I'm very willing to defer on this one. :) The one WHCC sent me was a B&W, so I assumed it was more appropriate. But, you know what they say about assumptions...

Hi Gabriel!

Sorry for calling you "crazy." :)

The glossy metallic sheen covers the entire image and gives a cool look to ALL colors... light, dark, and the multitude of shades and colors available.

It's hard to describe in words. I'd recommend sending WHCC or mpix one of your own good product shots and have them print an 8x10 for you. Who knows, you might hate it, but for product shots, I like it a lot!
