The drebel is a good enough tool to use for some time to come. It has some quirks, but you can learn how to deal with them and get great, consistent results once you master the camera.

13by18 prints are stunning, low light is great, skies are incredible, and there are no stupid features to get in the way. The raw mode is incredible, and focus is very good. Unlikely that anything would be significantly better, without its own quirks.

It would be much more significant if someone came out with a sony 828 style camera, with the oh-so-good images of the drebel. This would be the ideal travel camera.

Since it takes so much time to learn the characteristics of a camera, why would people be so interested in switching horses mid stream. Might as well just use it until you outgrow it!! You have to be pretty good to outgrow the drebels image quality, and other features.

Some people will always think thats there is something better out there,
something that will be the greatest of all time what ever.
Think of a dog chasing it's tail.

I have a hard time understanding why anyone cares what camera someone else buys. Its not like Canon is a start up company that might fold if people buy Nikons. Who cares?

"A dog chasing his tail" Very good analogy. We all know that every couple of months something better will be out. I hope that those that have bought the DR with some thought are not disappointed with the new Nikon. We all knew it was coming! If you want the new Nikon, great, but when the next Canon comes out in a couple of months, please don't come crying about it. The fact remains that the DR is an awesome camera! Stop worrying about the next great camera and just learn to take great pictures with the one you have. I still see some great pics with the D30 and D60 and so on. I just wish we didn't have to deal with it on this forum. Of course here I am writing about this as well, but it will be the last time....I hope :)

Even though it has been sad countless times that it's what's behind the camera that makes the difference; I don't see any harm in constantly trying to have the best tool to work with within one's budget.

Only seems to make sense to me, not at all like a dog chasing it's tail from my point of view.

If that works for you, then it works for you :) I guess it's just that I 've seen many pictures posted on these forums taken with $1,000 + bodies &
$1,500+ lenes that are absolute snap shots, easily could have been taken

with my Canon S30. I've also seen photos talen by people with expensive gear that are jaw absolutly jaw droping, the diference of course is the photographer.
I think when you compare the D70 & the Rebel you will find that they are

both very good cameras capable of taking great photos & run of the mill snapshots.

Some people never buy and just keep hanging on the announcements of the next big thing. I've had my dreb since it came out. I'm happy with it. The D70 looks nicer. If I'd waited what would I have? By the time the D70 is actually out Minolta will probably announce and I'd have to wait for that. By the time that comes out the next canon or sigma or olympus freds freaking camera shop's next big thing dslr will announce.

It's like buying a PC. The moment you buy one, you will find something better. And makes you feel sorry that you didn't wait longer. But the difference is that the PC will become useless when they come up with new software that takes more Gigahertz and Gigabytes, whereas the camera you have will function exactly the same way years to come regardless of what happens in the market.

Of course, D70 with 1/8000sec, 1/500s sync, 2000pics/charge, 3fr/sec upto 140 frames, instant power up etc will definately make me envious. But if you wait for another 6 months, you will see another upset by Canon, another by Pentax, Oly, Minolta and so on. So I will just sit back and enjoy what I have until a few years down the road when what's available out there will justify trading in my DRebel.

Now I'm hoping that Caonon will release a firmware upgrade that unleash the full potential of DRebel to fend off D70 attack. That will be awsome for DRebel owners.

I agree that you should try to have "the best tool to work with within ones budget." But, if you can afford to buy a new camera every 6 months, even with a trade in, then you should have gotten a better camera in the first place.

....the Rebel will be way behind the D70, there is too large of a difference between the two. And lots of the features have related hardware supporting them which FUDs obviously can't change. Like instant-on and the fast bus allowing the great continuous capabilities. Adding more buffer to the Rebel won't allow this to be duplicated. Since it can't move the data quickly enough.

I read the threads and all the resppnses have valid point. But the bottom line is that we all have the DR and yes it would be nice if it's performance can match the D70; however that's not going to happen. Some one once said " to want is to suffer ". Don't worry about what the DR/D70 can and can't do. WE ALL SHOULD JUST GO OUT & TAKE PICTURES. Then enjoy your works with a cup of greentea or cocco, milk, beer....ahhh, beeeer...
