Halogen/tungsten (Home Depot) lights alternative

I want to know how you came out with this calculation...

All lights are mesured by lumes...if two lights have the same lumes rating then they should be the same...

Difference here is that the 550EX has a very narrow beam that concentrates the light and makes it more efficient.

My test lights should be here tomorrow...all 900W and I will test the amount of light that all three put out...I estimate that if you use the same type of reflector, distance to subject, and compensate for color temp difference, you should have the same amount of light as any other light rated at the same lumes output...these little lights are rated at 4100 lumes...in any book that is a s$#tload of light...

hey

You need about 5000 watts to equal output of a 550 ex

I have used the Para 55s for over two years. I put them in a 12" Smith Victor flood heads. I use three for fill lights, and to help to focus in low lite spaces in my studio/warehouse. To use as main lights and have a worlkable fstop and shurtter speed with out using a tripod or high ISO setting, I think I would have to use about nine lights. If you do not use a head like th SV to concetrate the light, it just spreads and you would have to put the lights very close like for product work. Good luck...........

Here is a shot at my studio with the SV heads, one above and two on the right side, with diffusers.

I'm looking into them myself, but haven't gotten the courage to
order any.

Can you give an indication of ISO, fstop, shutter speed combination using a reflector (no SB/brolly)?

To many variables, distance of lights to subject, background, type and size of reflector, etc.... with the nine lights, I would guess about 1/100 shutter + - and 5.6Fstop. + -

JP,
  • Is para 55 the one that is equivalent to 250W?
  • Assuming we don't have a SV head like you, do you think a normal standing light fixture (eg. from Ikea) can work if you fit an improvised snoot on it?
  • For a 55W fluorecent bulb, is it as hot as a 60W incandescent bulb?

I think it closer to 300w equivlant, they are a lot cooler to the touch. They spread the light, a narrow snoot will not work well, they can't be focused like a strobe. They are abot 8" long, try a Home Depot clip on silver/chrome light holder for about $9.00 each, it does not cover the whole bulb, but has good reflection.
