OK I've been a little bit disappointed by the 28/1.8 so I'm looking for something a little bit wider and sharper. It will be either the 20/2.8 or the 24/1.4L (f/2.8 is a minimum and I'd like to avoid Sigma lenses because of their color rendition and lack of USM/FTM). Are there 10D users that use the 24/1.4L as an available light "standard" lens ? Are you happy with this combo ?

I use the 10D without the battery pack and my 24 1.4L for walkaround street photography. While the 24 1.4L is not super sharp wide open like the 35 1.4L, it still blows the crappy 28 1.8.

The 10D with 24 1.4 are my first choice when size and weight is an issue, when not, I'll take my 1Ds 24 1.4L, 35 1.4L, 85 1.2L, and 135 2L.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to think a little bit more about this before taking a decision, as it ain't a small expense. But the lens seems good for my needs though...

Any other 24/1.4L users out threre ?

Yep, unfortunately it lacks the USM focusing I'm fond of and at f/2.8 it is not so fast. If I took the "cheap" route, I would rather get the 20/2.8. I'm still undecided...

i use this lens as a walk around lens. i'm satisfied with what it does in available light, but i suppose you'll have to judge for yourself. if you'll pardon my amateur photos, you can look at these:

(most of these were taken with available light)

The 10D 24 1.4 is the first combo that gives you shallow enough DOF so your shots don't look like a digital PS. It is a bit soft BUT I used a gentle USM and I couldn't believe how beautiful the pics are. A lof of my shots are of the kids roaming around the house so I sometimes get within 6-8 feet, at this distance the OOF are isolated and they seem to fade smoothly. If you are a bokeh freak this lens gives nice round OOF reflections from lights. Of course, this lens also does something the 24/2.8 can't, it lets you shoot at f2.0. It also has the L glass color renditions to it. I know that is not scientific but when you see a shot with this you will be able to tell.

I have incredible street shots @ 1.4, if you like, I can post one.

I shot some quick pictures just to get a feel for what this lens would give me under "normal" low-light circumstances. Note that these shots are handheld at large apertures and not too fast times - just the type of photography I intend to use the lens for. No tripod, no mirror lockup etc. I simply took these pics as part of an effort to learn what the limits are for the combination of this lens and shaky me! :-)

The purple stuff in some pics is probably "blooming" from local over-exposure (?), and some of the softness in the pics is definitely due to camera shake as I tried to get the pics before someone in the store threw me out. I'm sure this lens can do better with a better operator... :-)

Yes, I would love to see soem samples, too.

I am thinking this 25/1.4 and 24-70. Initially I wanted to go with 24-70, but I recently see so many posts who have problems with their 24-70. So I started thinking of getting 25/1.4, 50/1.4, and 85/1.8. Anyway, if you can post some pictures wide open(or maybe f/2.0), that will be helpful.

Thanks.

Thanks Sam for the pictures, the 35/1.4 is certainly a very sharp lens ! If I were using a full frame camera I would get it, but I find 35mm to be too long on a 10D for a walk around lens.
