Hey guys, I have heard some talk on here about this lens, and quite honestly, it is underrated. Yes it is SSLLOOWW, but if you run it on continuous autofocus mode, you can get good shots out of it. It's also fairly sharp. Would I love to gave a 70-200 2.8 VR or even the Sigma 70-200, you bet, but until I can afford them (I am a student) I will be using this. Just to prove my point.

Half the shots in there are a 70-300G and half are a 300 f4. See if you can tell which is which.

They all are great. I might guess the football shots are with the 300 f4.

You, sir, are an idiot.
Micha
only does 5.6 at 300mm. You're one lucky guy. Enjoy your fantasy.

The guy with the signature that just doesn't make any sense.

I like the shots. Great timing on some of the shots. Could you give me some pointers on the settings you use. Are you on the sidelines? Are you using the D100 on continuous shooting? Using jpeg? Tripod or monopod?

You are talented at sports shooting -- can you share some of your camera and shooting style?

Terry

btw I am not a student and also cannot afford a $1000 lens --there's also the car and home to keep up, clothes and food to buy, ...

All the Tennis shots are with the G (handheld, the thing's really light) and all but one of the football shots are with the 300 f4(w/ monopod). In terms of tennis shooting, I've played my whole life and so from an action standpoint I can anticipate whats about to happen based on the game situation. The last football shot, with the guy making the catch in the air, I was shooting the 70-300G on continuous autofocus because the thing is so damn slow. The shots been cropped, it was originally at 180mm, manual, f4.8 and 1/2500 speed. I generally shoot tennis in shutter priority because the lighting doesn't change too quickly. All my night shots(football) were shot on aperture priority. Football day shots varied between Shutter, manual and aperture based on the lens. The thing about shooting sports is knowing the sport that you're shooting. Being able to anticipate what is going to happen and where it will happen will give you more of an advantage than having the fastest most expensive camera.

I have just ordered the 70-300 D. Basically, after looking at Nikon, Tamron, Sigma, I don't see an alternative in that zoom range without paying $800-1600 US. I wish it had a better macro. Thanks for the pictures that have been posted.

I have the 70-300 G and it works great here are a few shots with it.

Yes !
It's a great lens when you consider his price.
Sometimes it hunts for focusing but not always.
I've bought mine 1 year ago, I'm very satisfied.

I use mainly for portraits, good resolution for this purpose, cheap, and very very light.
The set N80 + 70-300 is MUCH lighter than F100 + 80-200 2.8

Sometimes I spend more than 2 hours holding this set, under the sun, thanks god for the new plastic lenses, hihihi.

Ok.. I am very new to these zoom lenses. You are saying that this lens only can shoot F5.6 at 300mm. If you tried to shoot say in aperture priority mode F10 at 300mm it would not work...??

Sorry for asking a newbie question,

Robert

Hi Robert,

They were saying the widest aperture that you can use with this lens is f5.6. It is a f4.5 at 70 and as you zoom it will change to f5.6(max. aperture) at 300mm. There is light loss as you zoom, but you can close down even more to f22. This is a variable aperture zoom, you will see 2 f stops listed in it's description.
e.g. @ 70 it is f4.5
@ 100 it is f4.8
@ 200 it is f5.3
@ 300 it is f5.6

I am making these #s up but that is how it works. Hope that helps and I didn't confuse you more.

Yes -I agree that it’s an excellent performer, given its cost. Frankly, I find it more pleasing to use than my despised 80-400 VR, in terms of ease of use and, gasp, sharpness. My 70-300 G came as freebie with a D100 body, and I rejected it out of hand, until pressed it into service at the tail end of a shoot, just to see what it could do. I was amazed, and confident enough in its performance to include the images produced with it in what was an extremely ’tight’ edit. The lens has also pulled me out of a hole on several occassions during a run of very bad luck with samples of the 70-200 VR (four lemons, one after the other!)

Enjoy the weekend
